MiG Killers Group Build, 7/07 to 6/08
Posted by Air Master Modeler on Saturday, June 30, 2007 7:16 AM

I've just started a Monogram 1:48 F-4J Mig Killer "Showtime 100" and it gave me an idea for a new GB. Now, I dont know if this has been done here before or not but I was thinking of starting a MiG Killers GB. This GB would begin 7/15/07 and end 6/15/08 and would include only American combat aircraft with comfirmed MiG kills. Any aircraft from the Navy, Marines and Air Force from conflicts starting with the Korean War to present may be done. Models can by any scale and any brand. NO prebuilt entries! Just started kits are welcome. Unlimited aftermarket items per model and no limit on models entered. Aircraft represented do not need to be ACE status, even if the aircraft only had one MiG kill it may be entered. You do not need to have a kit right now to join and I will welcome people joining this GB late. This GB will run for a full year so there is plenty of time to get a kit and join.

If you are interested, sign up and enter here. If we can get 10 people to join by July 14th we will begin the GB on the 15th. I think this would be a very interesting subject and a fine tribute to our Armed Forces pilots.

I think I'll join this. Did any F-18s shoot down MIGs during the 1st Gulf War? If not then I'll pick up an F-4 at my LHS.

I think an F/A-18 picked up a apair of MiG-21s during ODS.

It was one of the few times a bomb ladden fighter scored a kill, and then went on to complete their bomb strike.

EDIT:

Found this on ACIG....Pretty much says it all.

There are also a few F-15's that scored kills over Iraqi MiG's.

Also this, I am recinding the one aftermarket item rule and making it unlimited since I am using several aftermarket items on my F-4 I only feel its fair to go with an unlimited rule.

Cj, I hope you are going to join.

ww2modeler,  Welcome aboard!

I will be working on badges tonight and have them posted soon.

For everyone else reading this.... COME and JOIN US!Big Smile [:D]

I seem to recall reading about some F-84G's during the Korean conflict that registered MiG kills. If this is true, then I would like to enter a 1/48 Tamiya F-84G, but as I'm currently up to my eyeballs in GB's, I wouldn't be able to start until early next year.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-84_Thunderjet

According to Winkipedia... "During the war, the F-84 became the first USAF fighter to utilize aerial refueling. In aerial combat, F-84 pilots were credited with eight MiG-15 kills against a Soviet-claimed loss of 64 aircraft. The total losses were 335 F-84D, E and G models."

So YES! You can with an F-84G and if you want to join later that is fine. I just need ten people on list. Late starters are welcome.

I did some research but couldn't find any info on visual differences between the F-18C and E models. Are there any major differences such as shape, size, pods, etc. I know that the E has advanced avionics and a different engine but is that it?

The Super Hornet F/A-18E is a little larger than the C. Fusalage is longer, wing surface area is bigger and has the "dog tooth" extention on outer wings and the leading edge extentions...LEX's, under canopy extend out farther and wider than those on the C.

Hope this helps.

David, You might want to try Evilbay (Ebay) and look for the Revell 1/48 F-18C or their 1/48 Blue Angels kit which does come with the parts to build into the C bug. They are not bad kits and I have built both of them.

For info try ACIG.org.....they pretty much have every aerial victory from almost every war since WWII immaginable.

Here are some of the F-84 victories I found.....(may be incomplete since there are buku victories to sort through during Korea.)

Three questions, are we voting on a GB badge or are we just picking the one WE like best. And does our plane have to have the kill markings on it or does it have to be before the mission. And, are GB badges only issued to those who finished or to all thoe that participate.

No voting on badges, you can just take what looks best to you. You can add badge as long as your participating. The plane you model will represent does not have to have kill marks unless you want to add them. I plan to add mine because when Cuningham and Driscol got thier 3rd, 4th and 5th kills they already had two MiG kills which were marked on the F-4 on the top of intake splitter plates on both sides. It might look better adding them to but it's not necessary. I'm going leave up to GB members to decide how they want thier Mig Killers to look.

cj...great site and quite a list. Unfortunately for me there is not one F-84G to be seen there.

Fear not though, because I did find this on it....

7-Nov-1950USAF36 FBS, 8 FBWF-51DHoward Tanner20mmMiG-15

...so I will use my Tamiya 1/48 F-51D. The kit has markings for a bird from the same unit (36th FBS, 8th FBW), just a different pilot (Capt. J. W. Rogers). Plus, I have a few goodies to add to it....a Black Box 'pit, some Eduard PE, and a nice set of Ultracast exhausts. Big Smile [:D]

So, in light of all this info, I would like to change my entry to the F-51D, because there's no way I'm backing out of this GB.

Ach.......didnt notice the 'G' vs the 'E' that you were asking about.   Sorry.

I'll probably join this GB myself, but at the moment I have no earthly idea what to work on.

I still got a couple of half-completed tanks on my desk so it may be a bit.

Hey Rand, I am definetly in on this GB. I think it's a great idea and perfect timing for me as I am wrapping up some other GB's right now so the timing is great. I have my own personal Gb's that I am doing which is to build as many Marine Corp birds as I can.I have an F-8 Crusader in my stash from Monogram with USMC decals so I would like to find out if any USMC Crusader bagged a Mig?. Thanks for the website cj I will look it up in a minute to check but if anyone knows of a Crusader kill please let me know. If that is not a candidate then I will build a F-4J from VF-31 flown by CMD Flynn in June of '72 when he splashed a Mig. I have a 1/48 kit and decals for it ready to go. As a foot note my friend also flew that same bird during there time at Yankee station. It is currently in the Air and Space Museum (udvar hazy ) in Marine corp markings,  yeaahhhh. Very sore point with the VF-31 Veterans.

Do you have room for me?  I'm about to start a Tamiya 1/32 F-4C Phantom II.  It has markings for Col. Robin Olds' mount Scat XXVII.  The kill count would be 2 Mig 17's and 2 Mig 21's.

I may be wrong, but I dont think there were any Marine air to air victories during vietnam.

This should not be surprising since Marines are primarily tasked with Close Air Suport and should not be off chasing Migs to start off with.

However there were I think 18 or so Naval F-8 victories......actually the best kill ratio of the war belonged to the F-8

I didn't specify, Robin Olds was an Army Air Corps and then an Air Force officer.  He achieved 12 victories in WWII and 4 more in Vietnam.  Olds designed Operation Bolo which was a very successful operation used to draw Mig-21's into an aireal trap.  I'm a Jarhead, but that doesn't mean I can't model an Air Force aircraft.

One F-8 Mig kill I am familar with was that of U.S. Navy Cmd. Richard Bellenger serving with VF-162 flying F-8E's from the USS Oriskany shot down his first Mig in 1966.
