Mike, that's a great looking pit!  The weathering makes it look well used and slightly abused.  How's the Black Box resin kit?  I considered an aftermarket cockpit, but the tamiya set up looks pretty good.  However, I'm still wondering if I should have gone with aftermarket.

I decided to go ahead and order from Squadron the Verlinden cockpit set for my Thud. Was a toss up between that, using the kit's cockpit or, going with a more expensive set. At the moment I'm looking at doing this as an inflight display and so the canopy would be closed with a pilot in the seat so I opted for the Verlinden set.

I just found this thread and I was wondering how exact does the match have to be? cj95's list shows a few F-14As from ODS, and I have an F-14D in my stash. Acceptable or no?

This would give me an excuce to build it.

According to the database an F-14A damaged a Mig-25 but failed to shoot it down. Another shot down a helicopter. The only confirmed kills of Russian made fighter aircraft by F-14's that I am aware of were Lybian Su-22 Fitters. This would disqualify the Tomcat as a Mig Killer because it did not shoot down a MIG. The aircraft must have at least one confirmed Mig Kill to qualify for our GB.

Sorry Tobasco. You can go with an F/A-18 though.

Maybe next time then. I have too many in the stash to buy anymore Smile [:)].

I do an F/A 18E, but it's the new Super Hornet. Pretty sure it doesn't qualify.

Thanks much guys! This is just such a fantastic theme for a GB and I really want to do it justice. Thumbs Up [tup]

Chris, the Black Box set is amazing when it came to detail, but a little finicky in getting it all to fit. The additional floorboard meant that I had to trim a little away from the bottom of the IP to get it to fit right due to the added thickness. If I ever do another one, I'll attack it a little differently.....probably forgo the kit floor all together and just use the BB one. The sidewalls were a breeze however. Just needed to grind away what was already provided in the kit.

John, glad that link worked out for you! Can't wait to see some progress pics!

Just found this...

The F-14A DOES qualify as a Mig Killer. You can do a back date conversion on the D with a resin pit for the A and a set of exhaust pipes for the A also.

For now I would prefer we keep it simple and stick with aircraft that served with U.S. Navy, Marines and Air Force. Maybe later on we can add on other countries that scored MiG kills.

I'll add you to the list GA. Shoot me a PM when you know what your going to build and Sign - Welcome [#welcome] aboard!Thumbs Up [tup]

Found a GREAT book today at the lhs....was titled Mig Killers from Vietnam to ODS.  Had lots of great info, inc. color pics of Mig killers!!! :)   It even has pics of the north vietnamese acft!!  Had a fairly through listing of all kills from both sides. It is the squadron book.

dug out my F-4 today and then went for my decals only to find I had used most of the VF-31 decals for another project. Luckely I had no problem ordering a new set from Squadron so they should be on the way soon. I should be all set and good to go now.

P.S. Squadron has a very nice set of decals called " Mig Killers ". One set for F-4's and one set for F-14's. Loads of options and variety. Just a heads up for anyone who is looking for ideas etc.

I might toss in my F-14A and build as a VF-32 MiG Killer but I am undecided since I was planning to build it as a "What If" VF-96 Tomcat. Also hoping we can attract more people with F-18's and F-16's. The Falcon has a Mig-29 kill from the war in Bonsia/Yugoslavia.

Hey Air change of plans instead of a d model i will do a e model of the F-4 Phantom. Just need to get a hold of Mountain Home and talk to the Historian to get pics of the E model that I've found with Migs kills. Charlie

Rand, I have a 1/48 Tamiya F-16C that I'd love to do...thing is I'm already up past my eyeballs in GB's, but depending on how things go, I may be able to sqeeze the Viper in.

I got an older Revell 1/32 F-16 in my stash but no room to build it, otherwise I would make a Mig Killer of it.Sigh [sigh]

I haven't been getting much done this week on Scat XXVII.  I bought a book last week during my visit to the AF museum, entitled Modelling the F-4 Phantom by Geoff Coughlin and Neil Ashby, Osprey Publishing.  This book shows a couple of 1/32 builds, one RAF and one Hellenic (Greek) AF.  This book inspired me to order an Eduard Cockpit set, because a similar set looks so darn good in the book.  While  waiting for that to show up, I decided to paint the kit pit parts to see how it looks.  So far it's just a Sky Grey base with flat black panels and a sky grey drybrush.  I like the way it looks, even though I know I'll have to sand it off to use the eduard set.  What do ya'll think?

Chris, I think that's fine work! Hard for me to believe that any PE could improve upon that. Maybe a few PE parts here and there (IP gauges for example), but the side consoles have some really nice detail that the PE would be hard-pressed to duplicate. Just my My 2 cents [2c]

Thanks for the kind words ruddrat.  I think you might be right.  I'm going to keep working on it, and see how it looks.  When the after market set gets here, maybe I'll do some plastic/metal surgery to combine the two.  Maybe I'll just keep what I've done.  Then again, if the aftermarket is that good...  I guess I'm competing with Eduard.

Semper Fi,

Chris

I concure! That is a well done hand painted pit! I agree with Mike, all you need to add from PE set are handles, a few gagets,  and maybe a set of resin seats. Otherwise leave the pit as is and use it. It doesnt get any better than that. Two Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup] up!

Chris, very nice work on the pit. I think it is good enough to go with, just a few handles and a splash of colour here and there and it would rival any PE. I guess you will have to choose when the PE arrives. Either way good job.

Steve.
