Henry, The seats the kit comes with are pretty acurate they only lack seat belts and O2 bottles (ie, green apple) which you can add from scratch and use a PE set for the seat belts. I may just scratch build the detail on the seats in my F-4E just to gain more experience at scratch building. Resin seats would definatly look awesome on the pit.

Ok....Im not going to hand copy everything on the list, but look at these two links for Vietnam A-A kills.

I saw some F-4E kills in part 2.

Part 1

http://www.acig.org/artman/publish/article_243.shtml

Part 2

http://www.acig.org/artman/publish/article_244.shtml

In other news....congrats on the new airbrush compressor.......I remeber when I took the leap from canned air to a real compressor and it was 110% worth the cost.

Get a good fine-tip airbrush  (like a badger) and you will be set for life.

Cj, Thanks for providing the link to look up F-4E Mig kills. I am sure Henry will find it very useful.

I have used an air compressor before and I just bought a new Paasche H airbrush set which is every bit as good as Badger. This Passche H is my third one as I had the other two stolen. I used it to paint this bird here with just a can of air. (see pic)

Took the Paasche for a test drive on the Gunfighter and got excellent results. Now imagine what I'll be able to do using an air compressor.  Big Smile [:D] OH Yeah!

Sign me up, just one question do they have to be real aircraft or can they come from a book? if not are there any F-4D Phantoms yet(1:48) most likely.

It doesnt matter. The only rule here is that the aircraft your model will represent should have at least one comfirmed Mig Kill. Kill markings are not necessary but you may add them if you want. I'll mark you down for an F-4D. Here is a link to look up F-4D MiG Kills:

Rand

Rand,

I really don't know how to lighten them up, and I don't think I have any software that'll do it.  My digital camera is getting to be about 4 or 5 years old which I believe is anchient as far as electronics are concerned.  Feel free to do what you can with the pictures.  You can get them directly from my photobucket album at:

 http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v491/ridleusmc/

The Write-Pat pictures are in 3 different albums entitled A-1E Write Patterson, F-4C Write Patterson, and Write Patterson AF Museum.  Feel free to take a look around the rest of the photobucket site.  I'm proud of most of the builds on there.

So sorry to hear of your disaster there in TX. Glad to hear your family is safe and well, thank God for that. I hope your casualty list can be repaired or at least brought back to life. I hope and pray that life gets back to normal as soon as possible for your family. If there is anything I can do to help, let me know.

Those of you that would like to get an early start on your kits can do so. The official start will be July 15th, but if you want to start your kits now I am ok with that.

Now as far as GB rules go:

1. No rules except that the aircraft your kit will represent must have at least one MiG kill to its credit. Kill markings need not be present but may be added at the discretion of participants.

2. No limit on aftermarket items. If you want to super detail your model then definately GO FOR IT! No limit on how many models you want to build for this GB.

3. This is an open GB. Anyone may join at any time for the duration of this GB. People joining late are definately welcome.

4. BE RESPECTFUL of your fellow modelers even when they make mistakes. Do not be too harsh when someone asks for a critique. Be polite and most of all be helpful.

5. Lastly and most important..... HAVE FUN! Big Smile [:D]

Count me in too, I was looking at submitting an F-4 but decided that this build will give me a darn good excuse to build the Hobbycraft 1/32 F-105D.

Brief update.

  1. Removed Thud from stash shelf and dusted off box.
  2. Opened box, made oooh and ahhhh sounds while marveling at the parts trees.
  3. Built engine and wasted time painting it knowing it can't be seen but it does look cool.
  4. Check bank account to see if I can afford all the Cutting Edge F-105 correction sets?

Might build this one gear up? Will have to check the fit of the LG doors when I get to that stage.

Shooter

I have an F-105G/F 1/48 Thud in my stash I'm planning to build as a Wild Weasel. Her "Fangs" will be Shrikes and Harms. I have a choice to build as a F-105G or F and going to go with a G since G's mostly flew in SAM Supression missions.

Air Master...

I also have the Trumpeter 1/32 F-105G on the shelf along with a Verlinden cockpit set for it. I might pick up an Aries cockpit for the D while doing this build. Last night I was checking out the different CE corrections detail sets they have for these two kits. One would think after shelling out big bucks for such models, there wouldn't be a need to buy any detail sets to correct anything Sigh [sigh] .

Shooter,

I really try to limit buying aftermarket parts. It gets very expensive and when you model on a budget like me I have to make due with what I have. I will often scratch build detail if I can. Last night I made bezels from clear sprue for the AIM-9's heat seeker lens then I made a gun sight HUD for the top on the IP hood from scrap plastic. They look pretty darn good and makes my F-4J look a little more realistic. I also had to swipe the Rockeye bombs from my A-10 to put on the F-4J cause the kit bombs were wrong. Showtime 100 had six Mk20 Rockeye's on TER's and not the Mk 83's the kit comes with. I'll take some pics of the scratch detail and post them later.

I try to detail out my cockpits but boy some of those aftermarket detail sets looks outstanding! The Phantom has always been an old favorite of mine, just wish someone would make the right napalm bombs for USMC/NAVY that were used during the 60'-80's.

I know exactly what you mean. When I built my Navy F-8 Crusader I bought a cockpit PE set for it and boy did it good when it was done. I am well aware of the lure of adding aftermarket items, its the cost that usually drives me away.

Anyway... here are a few pictures of some of the scratch detailing I did last night.

Seeker lens on Sidewinder I made from clear parts sprue.

Gun sight HUD from clear card plastic.

HUD projection lens again from clear parts sprue

I dont do alot of scratch building making these tiny little parts but when I do and do it right they look great.

I read your post yesterday morning so I pulled the F-51 out of the stash and had a go at the 'pit.....lots of PE and B.Box resin. I should have some pics up either later tonight or tomorrow.

I just found this thread and I was wondering how exact does the match have to be? cj95's list shows a few F-14As from ODS, and I have an F-14D in my stash. Acceptable or no?

This would give me an excuce to build it.

Let's wait for Air Master to answer that one.  I once met an F-14D in Djibouti, Africa.  Tom Cruise broke the leading edge flaps, so it couldn't return to its carrier (Harry Truman, I think).  I'd be surprise if an F-14D had never knocked down a Mig.

Here's what I've been up to; the front of the J79's

The engine intakes,

and the Pit

Yeah, I started early, but you guys know how it is.  You can't have a cleared bench for more than a couple of days.

Chris

According to the database an F-14A damaged a Mig-25 but failed to shoot it down. Another shot down a helicopter. The only confirmed kills of Russian made fighter aircraft by F-14's that I am aware of were Lybian Su-22 Fitters. This would disqualify the Tomcat as a Mig Killer because it did not shoot down a MIG. The aircraft must have at least one confirmed Mig Kill to qualify for our GB.

Sorry Tobasco. You can go with an F/A-18 though.

Shooter,

Your off to a great start there! Keep it up! I am back to scribing again and still have the right upper wing and fusalege to be scribed. Belly and left upper wing are finished. I'll post more progress pics when the entire scribe job is finished. So far its looking mighty good and I hope it comes out as good an my Marines F-8E did.

I have a Hasegawa F86f-30 Sabre #07213, but have not been able to find any Mig Kills in the airframe. Banged Head [banghead] I would love to enter it if i could verify a kill in one.
