Gents,

This may be my last post for while. First, I want to congradulate those who have finished builds... WELL DONE! They all look great!

Second, I'd like to welcome btp2k2 to the GB with his soon to be A-4C "Zuni Rocket" Mig Killer, and also Bushy with his Gloster Meteor Mig Killer. I also want to welcome in advance anyone else that joins durring my absence.

Now, we have gone ahead and expanded the GB to include other Mig Killers from other countries and this will include US and NON US made aircraft. I have spoken with Chris and I am going to turn the GB over to him while I am away. Please show him the same courtesy as you have shown me. I feel Chris will be an excellent host and I am sure you all with agree. I will still have access to email and will check in now and then so feel free to send me an email.

When I get settle in my new home I will start looking for a new computer and I will be back. I am still planning to build the F-14A VF-32 Libyan Mig Killer since I called dibs on it first Laugh [(-D]. But if Last Priest wants to build my wingman that is OK with me, Thumbs Up [tup]!

Lastly, all new participants need to get a GB badge from first page on this thread and show everyone they are proudly part of the great GB. Most of all have fun with the GB and dont hesitate to ask for help from us.

See you guys soon,

Rand

We're looking forward to seeing your work.  It's pretty amazing that a Mig-17 got taken down by a Zuni rocket.  What do you think that pilot sounded like in the ready room after that mission?

Hey everybody, after some good advertising by the marketing guru for this group build ridleusmc, I have decided to join up as long as the invite is still open. Last thursday I started the Hasegawa 1/72 F-14 Atlantic fleet squadrons in the VF-84 Jolly Rogers markings and a venderlin resin cockpit. I cant say for certain how fast this build is gonna progress due to the fact that I have a one month old in the house but here is what I have so far

LP,

Welcome to our GB! There is a slight problem with the squadron choice of your Tomcat. VF-84 had no confirmed mig kills in the Gulf of Sidra incidents. I have been doing research on this because I am planning to also build an F-14A. According to my research an F-14 serving with VF-84 got a LockON with a Mig 25 but did not shoot or fire upon it. The Mig pilot was forced to disengage and left the area. The only F-14 squadron that had two comfirmed Mig Kills was VF-32 Swordsmen AC204 and AC207 flying wingman. I am planning to build AC204 when I come back from my haitious and I woudnt mind having a wingman in AC207. Big Smile [:D]

I was wondering if they managed to fit his head through the door.....imagine being the only guy, not just in your squadron but in the whole service, who can wear a MiG badge on the side of his Scooter.....talk about instant ego inflate

It would've been cool if the Scooter pilot was overheard saying "Hey, ya'll, watch this!" before he Zuni'd the guyWink [;)] or maybe the MiG pilot saying "Ha, I'm out of range of his guns. He'll never catch me now!" or maybe....

I have been away from the bench lately but have been filling and sanding on the seams in my spare time. I am just about finished them now and should be able to get back to building soon and everything else. How is everyone else doing out there.

Hey Steve,

I've also had trouble getting to the bench.  It seems like this build just keeps going and going.  Progress has been really slow.  I've been accenting panel lines for the last few days, and they look good.  However, there are alot of panel lines to hit.  Tonight, it took me an hour and a half to Artist Oil wash the left half of the fuselage.  The belly's done, the wings are done, and now the left half of the fuselage is done.  I'd be about done in an hour and a half if this was 1/48 scale.  I took some good progress shots, but photobucket is down for site maintenance (edit: they're done with site maintenance.)

I guess we all have to find the time.

Semper Fi,

Chris

Looking great Chris, your F-4 is superb. At least yours looks like an F-4 and almost complete by the looks of things. By the way what are you using to accent the panel lines?.

I would never recomend the AMT kit as it is horrible in all aspects of a kit. I was given it as a present and is the only reason it was in my stash. However, the body and wings are now together and all the valleys and gorges are filled and one last round of touch-up sanding to come and then on to paint and details. I should have some progress photos by the weekend.

It's just an artist oil wash.  Equal amounts of black and burnt umber were used, but the black greatly overpowers the umber.  I wipe away the excess wash with pieces of an old cotton T-shirt dabbed in mineral spirits.

I have seen some made with clay and water soluble and all u need is a damp rag of water to wash off what is not needed i am goin to look into this a little more the models i have seen done looks good and it looks less time consuming cuz u just slop it all over the model and it wipes right off.If anybody else has heard about this let me know and see how it is made.

And Chris i am callin your boss today so u can have a week off to get the scat done LOL

Hi guys,

I'm thinking of getting the Tamiya 1/48 F-15C and was wondering if the decal sheet contained any MiG killers from ODS and I figured this was probably the best place to ask.

TIA

Here's a quick progress shot from my MiG killin' Scooter...

Fuselage is just about complete....wing assembly is done, just about ready to put the two together....As you can see, the Hobbycraft Skyhawk fits about as good as they come. Almost no filler at all....I am definitely doing a couple more of these after this GB

Thanks Chris.

Yeah, the Scooter is a sporty little bird. What I love about is all the wonderful stuff you can hang under the wings of this little work horse.

The pit was so so...nothing to write home about....rather bland looking bang seat...definitely in need of a resin upgrade. I am saving up the model fund for a big scale Tomcat, so I'm going straight OOB on this guy. Actually...now that I am thinking about it, the cockpit on this Hobbycraft kit is very similiar to the old Monogram Skyhawk. Good enough to get the job done, but could really use some attention

Do you have a photobucket site or some kind of image hosting site?  We're looking forward to seeing the F-15.

The Phantom is done.  I had some trouble with this build.  Unfortunately, I think it shows.  It has a few flaws here and there, so I don't think it'll ever be a show piece.  However, I'm proud of it, and it looks good on my shelf.  It takes up a whole darn shelf.  I put the winning raffle ticket (yes, I won the kit) under the nose landing gear.  The final touch was a yellow pilots' ladder, but I think it looks better without.

Many Pics

Chris

Chris, I don't know where the "flaws" in your build are because I sure can't see any, great job Thumbs Up [tup]

GA,M, good looking progress on the 15. Glad you figured out how to post photos and looking forward to seeing more progress shots.

Chris, Phaboulus Phantom. She really turned out terriffic. Very good job all around, paint, build and a very clean job. I cant see any problems with it at all.

Darson, I could not tell ya what decals come with your kit in regard to a Mig killer but there are many decal options out there.

well as for the decals i am using afterburner decals. you can find them here at www.afterburnerdecalsdecals.com.  and the sqd that i am doing is the 71st fs f-15c 84-025 june 05. this bird got 2 mig 23 kills in ods. right now this bird is a show bird for the sqd so it wont get much weathering done on it. i should have it puttied were it needs it this after noon and in the paint booth by late tuesday afternoon.  i have an early work day on tuesday and i am off on wed so i should get quite a bit done on the eagle along with the f-8e crusader that i am working on for a marines gb on the arc site. so let me get off of here and get a little shut eye.. to many gb going on at one time and not enought time in the day to do everything.

hey darson go the site i mentioned  above and look for this sheet the lakeneath eagls. it has 5 mig killers on it and one of them is a dual mig killer. i havent got his sheet yet but i will have it soon.

Hey Chris, great lookin' Phantom! I'm glad you did Robin Old's a/c since he passed away last summer. He was definitely a great fighter pilot and leader. I remember he was interviewed on "Dogfights" and he mentioned one of his kills from WW2 in that he was the only one in history to kill another aircraft while in "glider" mode. Seems he forgot to switch his fuel tanks over when he punched off his wing tanks and they died just as he started firing. Hmmmm, I wonder if he ever tried using a Zuni......
