MiG Killers Group Build, 7/07 to 6/08

I'm glad y'all like the phantom.  It certainly looks nice on the shelf.  I started a little Minicraft 707 for a simple little build.  I doubt that will take long.  The big question is... "What (real) project should I start next?

First thing,thank you for the decals Chris they are awesome.The little stories that come with it on all the F-4s is interesting.

Second thing is says u trying to figure out your next project well since i am goin to do the scat ummm maybe u should do the eglin gorillas F-15C that i did LOL.

You'll like those decals even more when you go to apply them.  I don't know about the 15.  Great plane, but there's so much I need to build.

I just joined this forum and discovered the "Group Build". I saw that the rules had been amended to allow non-US aircraft, so I thought this might be a good place to try my first GB. I've got an Eduard Mirage IIICJ that I am planning to build OOB. Of course with this kit, OOB, is a bit misleading since it includes some photoetch, paint masks, and a nose weight! I think it'll be done up as #159 from the 101 group during the Yom Kippur War, 1973, with 13 kills on its nose, but the metal-finish 67 war versions beckon.

Hi all

I finally got to my ProModeler F-4E last night.  I got the cockpit started and the removal of the lumps n bumps on the wings.  I have the Model Master enamels for the SEA scheme, but would rather use Tamiya acrylics.  Would any one know which ones to use?

I did mine with MM Acrylics and I found them to be very tempermental compared to Tamiya Acrylics.  I'll look up some of the paint numbers. 

I asked a similar question on Page 11 of this GB post, and Rand was kind enough to help me out with some answers.  Check out page 11 it'll help you out.  This website helped too.

Progress is going slow, I have managed to get most of the sub assemblies done. I just have to mask and install the canopies and it's on to painting. Hopefull pics will be comming soon.

I ordered some Quickboost ejection seats to replace the kit seats, they look pretty good.  I've weighted the nose, and almost done detailing the pit.  Hopefully I will have the fuselage sealed up tonight.

I was looking at the lists, and I'm a little surprised that a Night Fighting Corsair never shot down a Mig in Korea.  I picked up a great Monogram Pro-Modeller kit at Cincy-Scale.

Chris, you got me wondering what other subjects were out there. Here are some other Mig killers:

In WWII the Germans shot down a number of Mig-3's; No specifics tho

According to the Korean War Data Base, http://www.acig.org/artman/publish/article_307.shtml, these guys all shot down Migs:

Just as an aside there is mention of an Afghan Mig-21 shooting down a DGMAF Mig-21. I don't know what DGMAF is. Who knows what else is out there if you scratch enuf.

Ken, Wow, that is some great info.  I'm going to have to look some of that stuff up just to see what Ethiopian, Eratrean, and Somali aircraft look like.  Migs shooting Migs is like Corsairs shooting Corsairs in the Football War between El Salvador and Hondoras

I use to take care of my old Marine Corps helicopters in Djibouti (on the Horn of Africa, borders Ethiopia and Eratrea).  The entire Djiboutian Airforce was parked next door.  It consisted of 3 Cessnas, about 5 Hips and 3 Hinds.  They also had about a dozen other aircraft of various types (some Russian, some European, and some American) stripped clean and sitting in the sand next to the Taxi Way.  East Africa is a wild place. 

btp, actually 2 Skyraiders shared the credit for one Mig-17 in 1965, and a Skyraider downed another one a year later.  I forget the details, but it was on Dogfights episode "Gun Kills Over Vietnam."  CJ95 posted some info about it on the 2nd page of this GB thread.  How's that Mig-Shooting-Scooter fitting together?

Yes a skyraider did take out a mig Tamiyas 1/48 A1-H comes with the decals for the mig kill.I already have one together before this group build got started but wanted to do another one but us PE and everything to detail it better for this build but here are a few of the one i have done already.

Just wanted to drop a note and let you all know I am OK. Made it to Ohio in one piece and have settled in pretty well. Found the hobby shop here and was quite impressed with the place. I hope to be back to modeling soon.

I have started my Revell 1/48 Spitfire to give me something to work on. I dont really have a permanent spot to work on models yet, just a little table so I figured the Spitfire since its rather small could be worked on there. I really wanted to pull down the 1/32 F-14A and badly start working on it but found one seat did not have the head rest molded so I will have to make one from scratch later. Maybe I'll just go with resin seats instead.

I also want to congradulate again everyone that has finished their Mig Killer. I also again want to welcome the new participants. Awesome Models guys! A few other things also...

Mig on Mig kills are not acceptable. This means (models of) Migs that shot down Migs are not going to be allowed. The reason being is that this GB was ment to showcase American and Allied Mig Killers. WWII warplanes do not count! It MUST be a modern combat jet warplane. Any questions please email me.

Yeah, I didn't think that Migs were acceptible for this thread.  Thankfully, I don't think anyone here was going to build one.  It's kind of a cool curiosity though.

Welcome back Rand, good to see ya again and hope all is well. Chris did a great job while you were away,  thanks Chris.  Got a lot of work done on the F-4 today, canopy masked and installed and the rear metal panelling painted and currently drying. Tomorrow I hope to get the base coat applied.

That is horrible.  Make sure the Pug doesn't get his Milk-bone after he uses the lawn.  That'll teach 'em.  Sorry to hear about the Eagle.  We were looking forward to see it.  However, Hornets make for great models.  We have something new to look forward to.

Sorry to hear of your troubles GA. I know how you feel, I have a dog (dashund) that used to love the taste of plastic. She destroyed my whole collection of 54mm Airfix figures some years ago. I built them as a kid and was restoring them when she got them. Good luck with the Hornet and looking forward to seeing it.

Finally some progress shots, poor shot but progress. I began fixing the panel lines that were damaged in sanding and next thing I know I am re-scribing the whole thing. That was a lot of fun and had to re-sand afterwards to fix my mistakes. I have already painted the blast panels and to move things along I put on the landing gear and doors on as they are all going to be white anyway. Should speed up things a little. The canopy fit is terrible and I sanded as best I could to make it flush. Primer goes on tomorrow.

looking good thie sidure i have one small report on my mig killer hornet. i have it all together and its all most ready for the paint booth the only thing i have to do is fill one small gap on the left wing joint it didnt go together as planned but all in all it has been a trouble free build. i sure do hope that when academy releases thier new hornet in wont be such a pita like the hasagawa are so here are just a few pics from the old work bench.

Nice progress GA, I really like the third photo as it makes the front of the a/c look stretched out. Made me look twice. Thanks to the holiday I have got a lot of work done on the F-4. It is all primed and the white undersides are done. Just a little more filling and sanding on some small areas and Iwill be ready for the top colours.
