Again, my thanks to all of you for the accolades. Make a Toast [#toast] Having a good time with this one!

Really hoping I get to cram some more of this guy in this weekend with my other build(s), need to do a bit of touch up painting (and glueing - a bit clumsy in the handling while I was airbrushing), then get a coat of future on there before all of the Egyptian decals...

Then you guys get to help me out, as this is when I get a bit hazy on what to do. Pretty good with the "sludge wash" but past that, I'm kind of in the dark with aircraft weathering. Any and all suggestions you might have will be considered. Wink [;)]

My opinion?  Don't.

Weathering is overrated.  But that's just my My 2 cents [2c].

Wow, for real? How far do you usually go with your a/c builds after clearcoating the decals?

Preshading, panel line wash and that's it.

For myself, I don't buy into the weathering kick.  To me it just looks silly sitting on my clean shelf.  The Flanker I just finished is probably the only build where I've actually attempted any sort of weathering and that was still subtle.

Now if I was putting together a diorama with some context to inform the weathering, that would be a different story.

To weather or not to weather is a huge and neverending discussion on the forums, and in the end to each his own.  But unlike the armor guys who usually can't fathom a build without weathering, the aircraft side is typically more forgiving.  Typically. Big Smile [:D]

Do what makes you happy and forget everyone else's opinion, including my own.

Cheers!

My opinion of weathering is that not all things should look like they just came off the show room floor.  Things that are used and used hard should look it.  And things that typically get some kind of regular cleaning tend to not look too weathered.  Aircraft tend to get a little more attention because if it fails while in use it tends to be a bad thing.  Where as if a tank or truck breaks down... not that big a deal.  The driver or comander gets out shouts a few colorful phrases at the beast then gets some maintenance folks out there to fix that thing.  I mean there just aren't that many tank "soap and suds".  And that would be my My 2 cents [2c]My 2 cents [2c]My 2 cents [2c]My 2 cents [2c]My 2 cents [2c] < inflation you know Smile [:)]  2cents cost about 10 now.

Huh. Very interesting. I figured that for most of the guys who really "did aircraft" there was some cache of special aircraft weathering tricks to whip out to make their builds look like they do.

I'll definitely do the wash, we'll see what it needs (if anything) after that. Wink [;)]

Ya know, as RMV hints at, aircraft are probably trickier to weather than armor.  Heck, it's almost expected armor will get dirty, grimy, muddy, etc.

But aircraft by their very use can't get that dirty.  That thing called aerodynamics keeps getting in the way. Big Smile [:D]  That and anal crew chiefs!  Oil stains, streaks at vents, gun exhaust stains, patchy repainting, faded paint, chipped paint, etc. are all the more subtle ways an aircraft gets "dirty".

I guess it depends on how far you want to take it?  Some of us might have some tips if we knew where your focus was?

Arki - usually when I'm doing armor, I have some sort of a reference pic to work off of - sadly, my library doesn't cover aircraft so good. So I'm really just going off of some random 21 pics off of the net, most of which show some pretty beaten up (read:old) aircraft. Also figured that being in the desert would lead to a good bit of paint chipping on the leading edges...but I'm purely speculating! Tongue [:P]

I suppose I could just go for a new-ish aircraft...or one that's just been re-painted. Wink [;)] Like I said, I'll do the wash, see how she looks after that.

I wish I could find some of the photos I've seen of WW2 russian planes.

They were caked in mud from poorly-maintained airstrips.

Anyone wonder why they were shot down in such alarming numbers?!  Tongue [:P] You can't get good performance out of the airframe with mud all over it!  *Partially joking, no historical corrections necessary regarding the airwar at the Russian front.

Anyway, dupes, sounds good.  As I've said it's up to you as to the end result you're shooting for.  If you decide to go with the abused and beaten route, perhaps post the reference pics you have and we collectively can throw up some ideas to achieve the look.  Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing this come to the finish line as we don't see that many Soviet aircraft here.

That's kind of surprising to me that there aren't more people who build this stuff. I know when I was a kid (not THAT long ago) I was so into Russian stuff, I could silhouette ID just about anything they flew...

Having started this one, I was poking around to see what other kits was available - the selection is pretty weak, unless I'm missing some manufacturers. Again, surprising.

I really like how this one is coming out though, so rest assured that there'll be some more coming off of my bench in the future. Wink [;)] Already have another MiG-21(MF), MiG-19, MiG-29, and am seriously eyeing a Flanker for my next big purchase. Big Smile [:D]

Agreed.  I'm really jonesing to do a Su-25 Frogfoot, but the few kits of it are OOP.  The Monogram shows up on Ebay every so often, but as I understand it's molded off the pre-production aircraft and takes a ton of work to update.  No thanks.

I think I told you I would send you some pictures once I completed my Flanker.  I'll do that once I get around to photographing it.  I can give you some tips on areas to watch out for if you ever decide to get the Academy kit.

Huh. I actually have an SU-25, but it's 1/72 - not my usual scale...been kicking around (unstarted, I think) since high school. Must be a Revell or Monogram?

Still eagerly awaiting those Flanker pics, btw. Wink [;)]

dupes, yeah I know.  She's going to be a pain to photograph 'cause she's HUGE compared to the typical WWII aircraft I've been building.  Heck, she's huge compared to other modern fighters!

I haven't doing as much that I hoped, but working with several projects makes you kind of split up! Well, anyway I've been working a little with something that I'll hope will improve the looks of the IP somewhat!

Although it would have been better to do the rings first, it's not easy if you come to think of it after you already put on the decal Smile [:)]

Hey, thanks Azgaron! You can reuse silly putty - for a while. Eventually it gets "paint-logged" and starts to lose it's adhesive properties, which makes it useless for masking. However, I usually get quite a few builds out of it - probably close to 10, depending on how much overspray you're putting on the putty. Pretty versatile stuff! Big Smile [:D]

Please forgive me for going off topic, but I am stuck at work instead of at the bench (still can't get the computer to recognize the camera)

I was thinking about Jeff Foxworthy and his "you might be a redneck" and how it may apply to modelers.

If you spend more time and money in the cosmetic aisle than your wife...............you might be a modeler

If you have ever stolen a dental pick from the dentist.......................................you might be a modeler

If you have more cleaning supplies at your bench than under the sink...................you might be a modeler

If your bench has more first aide supplies than your medicine cabinet....................you might be a modeler

If your Dr. is missing a pair of hemostats..........................................................you might be a modeler

If you can make origami animals from brass.......................................................you might be a modeler

If you're invited to a masquerade ball and bring your bf-110 cockpit canopy.............you might be a modeler

If your wife asks you if you're getting wood and you pull out your vac-u-form mold,,,,,you might be a modeler

If you pay $228.00 for a gallon of paint..............................................................you might be a modeler

If you have more nail polish and in brighter colors than your wife.....................you might be an auto modeler

If you spend more on armor/aircraft research than on your college kid's books...........you might be a modeler

If you have come up short for the kid's allowance but just happen to have a great new kit..youi might be a modeler

If you go to the fabric store for thread (invisible) and ponce wheels and pattern paper......you might be a modeler

If you agree with more than five of these  you must be a modeler
