Hey dupes, sorry to get back to you so late. My progress on my tank is this:

*All camo has been masked and painted

*Roadwheels have been painted black

*tools/ MGs painted gunmetal

What I still have to do is weather it and make it look 'good'. I would upload a picture but I cant find my cable to connect my camera. Mayby tomorow I can get a picture with my webcam. Technically its far enough along to be finished as an uber-clean build, but wheres the fun in that? After around may 14th I should be able to jump right back into modeling and finish it up.

Hey Winter Warriors - just checking to see if a couple of the finished builders were still hanging around...if your name is JThurston, Hermesminiatures, or Plastic_Cross, do you fellas have any finished pics for the GB? I know all of you either a) finished or were b) awfully close to finishing months ago, and I just want to see if you guys are planning on posting pics! Big Smile [:D]

Just got my new laptop yesterday (for "work")...so now I have the ability to go places that have internet connections that don't include the word "dialup". Cool [8D] Will be going through the whole build here in a couple of days, wanted to see if there were any additional projects to add to the end-of-action report. If you have anything please post some photos ASAP!

Shoot, I feel bad dupes!  My Panzer IV is SO close to being done, but work, work, work and family requirements have kept me off the bench.  As it is I may not be able to get back to it until this weekend.  I don't even have time to snap a couple of photos. Disapprove [V]   I can only spare a few minutes a day while at work just to check the forums and see what I'm missing.  Anyway, enough sob stories from me.

Your Stuka looks great!  Townsy's S-Tank is super looking!  Scott's Pz.38(t) fantastic, especially next to the Tiger!!  Great, great GB!  I hope I can join the next WWII!!

Dale you still poking your head in here? I was thinking of trying to do the "field-applied" method like in one of the pics you sent me, but couldn't work a way out (at least with my airbrush) to make it look convincing. That would certainly added to the level of "distress". Heheheh. Wink [;)]

By my clock here there's only 8 hours of Winter Warriors remaining (more if you're in, say, a Nevada time zone...Whistling [:-^]) so use them wisely! Tomorrow's picture day for a lot of people! Cool [8D]

Barely Dupes, just got back in, as a matter of fact. Been bouncing around in the hospital and such fighting a bone infection that started in an old break in my jaw. But enough of that "schtuff". Wink [;)]

The builds look incredible guys!!! Every one is a top notch work of art.

Dupes, ya did a fantastic job putting this together Bow [bow] And it's an honor to be amongst the builders who have poured their hearts into the work seen in this GB thread.

Gentlemen, many thanks for letting me watch you work.

some assembly required:  I agree.  When I first started reading FSM there was a "how to" article, two issues in length, about weathering a Tiger I.  I found it to be a really informative article...it's actually what got me into modeling "seriously".  I hope my tutorial, if published, would inspire others in the same way.  Matt and Aaron have read some of the tutorial and are interested...I just need to get off my butt and get it ready for submittal.  Thanks for your comments, it's helping to get me motivated to get it DONE!!!

panzer88:  If you're out there shoot me a PM with some contact info.  I was in Queensbury Thursday night and go there frequently...I'm here in Schroon Lake now.

Hey guys!  The Dragon Pz. IV Ausf. G is finally done!  Well at least as done as its going to get now....I plan on doing a little vignette with a commander figure so final weathering will wait until then.  Sorry it took so long; because its so late I'm not going to claim the badge.  This one kept evolving the more I worked on it.  I'm not totally happy with the results, but at least it was a learning experience.  Now that I've done this first one, I'm eager to try another winter scheme!!!  Anyway here it is.  Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed building it!

bufflehead: Beautiful Panzer!  Fantastic job on the gray showing through the whitewash...very convincing and not overdoneThumbs Up [tup]. You may want to dirty her up a bit in the high foot traffic areas (top of turret) and maybe even add a little grime in the hand hold spots (hatches).  I'll third that exhaust and track request, it's some of the finest I've seen.

Wow, a nice finale to a really cool GB. I've been catching up on the posts from the past 8 weeks (had to go back overseas to finish up my tour in the 'Stan) Badge or not, your Mk IV looks great, worth the wait. Also, kudos to the Marder and the 38(t) as well as Dupes' Stuka. I'm looking forward to the finished build post. Great job everyone!

Yeah, I'm looking forward to that finished build post myself...Laugh [(-D] Just need to find some time to take me and the new laptop down to the coffee shop so I can run back through the entire GB on broadband. With the wife heading off to Denver for 6 days, I should have AMPLE opportunities to do so. Wink [;)] Not to mention a ton of build time. Mmmmmm. Build time. Heh.

Sorry guys!  I've been too busy at work to respond and when I got home yesterday my computer crashed!!  Banged Head [banghead]  Its still not working, but I'm at work now so I've got a few minutes during break....

Thanks everyone for all the kind words!  I had a vision on how this was SUPPOSED to look, but it turned out a little different!!  I made some mistakes along the way and there are some things I missed.  SMJ pointed out a couple of issues, some of the weathering came out funky and the tracks and exhaust actually did not turn out the way I initially planned!  When I have time today I'll post a few lines on how I did them.  Nothing special, just combined some standard techniques and a couple of new ones I read about.

Thanks Townsy11!  It was a loooong build, but worth it!

OK, here's the deal with the tracks and exhaust.  Sorry, I didn't take any WIP photos of anything so I'll do the best I can to explain it:

First the tracks.  Credit for this goes to the doog and to Tom Cockle's "Modelling the Early Panzerkampfwagen IV", one of OSPREY Publishing's fine modeling guides.  If you read the doog's (Karl Logan) "Indy Track Link Tutorial" on the Armorama website you will know what I'm explaining.  The tracks were basecoated with "dark earth", my personal mix of Tamiya Flat Earth, Red Brown and Black.  I just mixed them until I got a medium brown color.  When this was dry I applied a heavy wash of Raw Umber followed by a medium heavy wash of black.   At this point the tracks looked pretty good, but I wanted a grittier, dirtier look to them.  For this I used the track weathering method in Tom Cockle's book.  He first basecoats in a dark earth enamel.  He then wets a brush with Tamiya acrylic thinner, dips it into different shades of ground pastels (tans, browns and rust), then daps the mix randomly over the tracks.  Since I basecoated in acrylic I simply switched to enamel thinner and dipped into Mig Pigments instead of pastels.  I used European Dust, Dried Mud and Black in different applications.  The European Dust dries very light so I had to tone it down with the Mud and Black.  This gave the tracks a very mottled, gritty, dirty, stained look...close to what I wanted, but not quite.  However, not wanting to spend any more time on it I left them as is.  I then stuck my fingertip into some Gunpowder Mig Pigment, ground the pigment into my fingertip until it had a nice shine and then rubbed it over the raised outside part of the tracks, and over the guide horns on the inside.  Lastly I took a black charcoal art pencil and rubbed it in over the inside part of the tracks that the roadwheels would contact.  That's it!

I tried something new with the exhaust:  First I hand brushed the exhaust with Vallejo Model Color #835 Salmon Rose, which is a light pink color, over the Panzer Gray basecoat.  This left a nice mottled effect.  Yeah I know...PINK!  Then using a chocolate colored mix I dabbed on small dots, concentrating on the inside and outside corners and the places that would get very hot.  Looked pretty strange at this point!  Then I took a heavily thinned black/brown mix and post shaded with my AB over the exhaust aiming for a very mottled look.  Its was looking pretty good now, but I wanted a grittier look so I took some dark brown pastels and some Old Rust Mig Pigments and starting dabbing it on with a little enamel thinner.  When this was almost dry I took a brush wet with enamel thinner and removed some of the rust and brown in certain areas. Then I mixed dark brown and black pastels and did the same in random areas, using the enamel thinner to tone down areas that were overdone.  A little flat black ABed on the exhaust pipe and that's it!  To be honest I went overboard with the dark colors and as a result the exhaust came out darker than I wanted, but it still looked pretty good...better than any of my previous efforts.  I learned this technique from Sam Dwyer's articles in "Model Military International" magazine (sorry! no plug intended FSM!), so credit goes to him!

I hope this explained things well enough.  I'm not a professional writer so my composition is lacking!

dupes, THANKS for your great hosting of an awesome GB!!

I'm eagerly awaiting WINTER WARRIORS II!!!

Ernest - you're absolutely welcome. Big Smile [:D]

Great explanation on these techniques - going to try some of this out. I've never been particularly satisfied with how my exhausts end up...and another cool-looking track method is ALWAYS welcome!
