Dave great to have you in the build, I'll be looking forward to checking out that 109.

All, I am just about to jet off for three weeks holidays up in the tropics Cool [8D].  Frank (Daywalker) has kindly agreed to look after the thread while I'm away and keep track of any new members who sign up.

When I get back I'll do the roster with names and builds.

Cheers

Not to worry Darren, I'm on it! Big Smile [:D]

I decided to go with the 1/48 Tamiya Bf-109 for this GB.  Truly one of my all-time favorite kits. Thumbs Up [tup]

I am pretty sure Werner Molders' unit did fly in the BoB, but does anyone have a profile of his aircraft?  The only one I have is dated March '40, and I am wondering if it is the same aircraft he flew later that year.  TIA!

Have a great holiday Darren. Get rested up for the GB. Daywalker, I know he flew in the BoB and I may have an old Airfix BoB kit of his aircraft. I will check the stash tomorrow and see what I can dig up for ya.

Thanks for looking into that for me Steve!  I have the 1/48 Hasegawa Bf-109E "Galland" that includes some markings for Molders, but no mention of the time it served.  I appreciate your help! Thumbs Up [tup]

LOL! The -109 is my son's favorite airplane. He's got as many of them as I do Spitfires!

On that subject.... he's planning on doing a Spitfire Mk. I in the markings of Adolph Galland, titling it "Galland Gets His Spitfire". I thought that was pretty clever!

I might be able to help you out with that.  I'll dig through my references tonight.  Do you have a picture or a scan of the markings from your kit?

Frank, Werner Molders definitely flew in the BoB.  The Osprey "Aircraft of the Aces", No.11, has a profile of his aircraft.  A Bf-109E, "Black Chevron-Triangle".  It appears to be RLM 02/71/65 in a non-standard splinter camo with the blunt spinner painted black or RLM 70.  Has 5 white victory bars on the upper fin.

Molders not only flew in bob he was killed near the end. Had he lived he may have taken gallands place. He a very well known pilot and should be no problems finding info on him. He was one of the first to fly the F variant and a stong supporter of it. Galland and others would not fly it as they thought it was under armed. Molders was one of the luftwaffes best early pilots.

Well, I too have 1/48 tamiya spitfire MK. I spitfire. I also have a order waiting for added goodies on a tamiya 1/48 E-4. So depending on what happens I'll do one or both.

Werner Molders death was especially tragic (well, all death is tragic....).

He was killed in a plane crash while flying as a passenger in an HE 111 from the Crimea to Berlin November 21, 1941 on his way to attend the funeral of Ernst Udet, a close friend and his superior.  The plane crashed while attempting to land in Breslau during an especially bad thunderstorm.  The pilot of the plane didn't want to make the flight due to the bad weather, but Werner Molders insisted as he did not want to miss Udet's funeral.

Been looking through my decal stash and came up with these schemes for E-3's......

* 2.Staffel  May 1940

* 7./JG77 (shot down in April, '41)

* 8./JG2 "Richthofen" (based in France, Summer of '40)

* 9./JG54 flown by Waldemer Wubke

* III/JG54 Oct. '40

* 1./JG51 flown by Heinz Bar (France, Sept. '40)

* 4./JG54 flown by Hans Philipp (France, Oct. '40)

The two in bold I was able to confirm saw action in the BoB, but I'm not sure about the others.

Rick, I saw that one in my references- just need to find out if that aircraft profile from March 1940 was the same one he flew in the BoB.  Thanks for the help! Thumbs Up [tup]

Frank, checking some of my other references, the aircraft in the Osprey profile is one of the birds Molders flew during the BoB.  In the Luftwaffe Colors Book/Battle of Britain, by Eric Mombeek, there is a photo of Molders in the cockpit of Black Chevron-Triangle.  According to Mombeek, he also flew an E-3, an E-4 & a very early F model during the BoB, but the published pictures don't provide enough info to do an accurate model.  Maybe some other source will bear fruit, but I've exhausted mine.

Frank,

This site has a picture of the nose of his Emil during the BoB:

http://www.fighteracesonline.com/werner_molders.htm

I suspect that if you go with the yellow nose with the JG 51 emblem and a standard 71/02 mottled scheme, Kommodore chevron and bars and a yellow rudder you'd probably be pretty darn close.  A little research may be required for the correct number abschuss bars on the rudder and after that you should be set.

I was reading something the other day that stated that the falcon's head emblem of JG 51 wasn't introduced until early '41, apparently that was wrong, I'm shocked to discover everything I read on the internet isn't actually true! Wink [;)]

I think I am going to build a Spitfire from 74 RAF squadron.

Serial # P7361 or # P7363

Anyone know what was it:  Mk IIA or MK IIB   ???????

Also if anybody knows what the markings were used for this aircraft :

ZP* ?

Flying is a thrill #2 known to mankind. Landing is #1.

Greg,

I dug through all of my Spitfire references, and my web resources and all I could find was Mk.IIa P7370 (ZP*A) but nothing on either of the two which you seek.  On a better note, I did come across this photo of Jan Zumbach, and thought of you.  Not sure if you have seen it, but it was a good photo.
