Very nice....looks well beat up.....I persume the "aiming stakes" on the back are not the "ramming staffs" you mention.

The aiming stakes give a nice contrast....I am not sure if the "candy cane" pattern the US uses is the same for the German's. I am sure our resident Germaholic Bill can comment. Then again who cares.....it looks good.

Tony, the stuff on the shelf is outstanding. I love the wood crates.... especially the wood finish inside with a slight overspray on the lid. Impressive.

As for the aiming stakes, the could be right, Bill is the Germaholic man!! As I said, no matter what it looks great

Tony, with utter sincerity, I have to say that you are the "quiet Master" here. Your low-key style is almost deceptive to the genuinely formidable skill you possess as a modeler.

This build once again shows that you have a style that leaves, in my opinion, no real room for criticism. I think that just about every one of your builds are just about perfect in their assembly, detailing, painting and weathering execution. I look at them and say "Yeah! I wouldn't' change a thing!"

Great job. GREAT model! Bow DownBow Down

Mike,

To answer your question, the Germans used the same "candy stripe" pattern on their aiming stakes for artillery in WW2. I'm not 100% sure that Bronco got it right (or wrong) because the Germans had the aiming stakes do double duty as cleaning rods on other vehicles such as the Wespe...after all, it's just a matter of painting the rods you already have so you don't have to carry a 2nd set and is efficient when you come right down to it. I thought Tony was saying though that the kit included a 2nd set of rods that are the cleaning rods unless I misunderstood?

The real irony here of course is that they are in fact Russian cleaning rods/aiming stakes pressed into service right along with the gun. That's why I asked my original question...the same rods are seen on the Marder III but not candy-striped as the Marder III was a direct-fire only weapon. Given that the Diana plopped the whole gun onto the modified halftrack chassis, it stands to reason that the indirect fire capability remained along with it (even if never used) so the rods it would be equipped with would also be striped to perform the aiming stake duty.

Hey Bill you didn't misunderstand, here's the other set that came with the kit.

Also the ammo crates have three different types of shells in each too. Never heard of that before??????

One of the photos in Rommels Funnies shows the rods on the rear and at the angle it's hard to tell but they appear to only have the red and white division in the middle.

Bill

Looking at the photos it appears the gun has a panoramic telescope on the right side. These are typically used for indrect fire as opposed to an elbow telescope for direct fire though the pantel can be used for both. My guess is the weapon is set up to function as both.

The aiming stakes have the candy cane pattern on them to make it eaiser to pick up in the pantel sight at a distance. I am not sure of the size of the German or Russian candy cane. I am sure it is not much differnt than the US. You can look here

http://www.redleg2scale.com/RBMI%20Info/Artillery%20Modeling.pdf

on page 26 to see the US aiming posts and pattern. Also Archer just came out with a decal for aiming stakes, though I think it is just simpler to paint it.

As for the ammo. I am sure two of them are HE and AP (High Explosive and Armor Piercing) the other could be shot, smoke or WP. Look at the above link on the ammo section and it may give some ideas. If there are different types of rounds, they would be marked and painted differently also.....but that is another discussion.

Let us not digress....very nice work Tony...sorry to get so anal in your thread

Tony,

A short follow-up...are both sets (the one on the back as well as the one in your most recent post) meant to be mounted on the vehicle or only the one set on the rear?

Mike,

The two rods would be joined together to make a single stake (only one end is "spiked"), so the division as Tony has it painted would make sense in terms of creating four even divisions for the full stake.

Nope, there is nothing in the instructions about using those in the last shot.

Now don't you go upsetting Redleg, he's anal prone Bill.Big Smile

I got down when Mike said that.

If I had to lay a bet, I'd say those 2nd set of rods are hold-overs from the Bronco original artillery piece kit molds/sprues and were likely designed to be mounted on one of the trail arms.

I was looking over my photo refs the other day and noticed the elephant on the right fender:

I went through my extra decals but found no elephant so I put out the word and a friend on another site said he had one that he didn't use for a Tiger tank. It was only the outline of one but I figured I could take some white paint and fill it in.

It's not the same elephant but close enough for me.Big Smile
