Jeff, I prefer to paint and weather them first, then like you said, build them and just touch up. In other words, it's one of the last things I do.

Cool so i figured it out right.

I GOT MY ZIM DONE!!! too big to scale but even and sanded a little. I screwed that back end up and just might remove it because I have parts back there yet to go on after I paint it. I stopped short on the turret... left a gap where the spare treads go and on the other side where the loader(? is that what it is) hatch is. I barried enough detail below my white putty. It looks cleaner then I thought I could do. taking pics for ya all but will be a while til I post em but they will be there.

Now back to the tracks.... what color and washes in order they are applied please.

Ausf...you have inspired me to weather it up too so I hope I dont disappoint ya or the others.

Hi woodbeck. I like to primer mine in black (I use acrylics) then shoot a rust, followed by a raw umber wash with artists oils. Next I apply a light dust spray with Tamiya buff, finalized by a drybrushing of the guide horns and top parts a dark metallic grey. I think silver is too shiney, but everyone has a different way of doing it anyway.

For treads:

1.) Flat black mixed with blue.
2.) Dark brown colored wash.
3.) If you want to simulate dust apply a light coat of buff
4.) Dry brush with metallic grey.
5.) Dry brush with chrome silver (just lightly on outermost edges of the tracks)

Ahh. Nice to hear. Now you shall be granted one of the Armour Pearls of Wisdom. If you muck it up, it's battle damage!Tongue [:P] No questions asked.

Look forward to seeing your pics Jeff.

Tracks: I build mine in sections, then remove them from the tank, paint flat black (both sides), heavy dry brush MM steel, wash with mix of Humbrol #63 (not 62 as I've said before!) and burnt umber oil paint several times, finally highlight with MM silver. Works for me.

Okay, guys and gals, I did it. I got out my Accurate Miniatures SBD-5, marked up the instructions to show all the parts that get modified or replaced with the Eduard set, cut open the bags, and washed all the parts. (I also washed parts for a Dragon Pz IV at the same time, so who knows what kind of mutant, plane-tank thing is going to come out of all the parts being mixed together!! Maybe it would be a Daunt-zer, or a Panz-less, I don't know!! lol (No, I'm not really stupid enough to accidently mix up the parts from wingy thingy and ground pounder kits. I reserve that for different releases of the same kit! (Ohh, what a mess!)

Anyway, one thing that struck me right off. AM kits sure have MUCH smaller sprue attachment points than DML armor kits! The good and bad being, you have to be much more careful with the toothbrush on the wingy thingies, but you don't have nearly the potential for ugly scars and broken parts (due to heavy handed removal), either. I'll probably clean the PE parts in vinegar tonight and drag out the interior green! Whoopie!!

I will DEFINATELY need help with wiring the engine, and plumbing the landing gear. I've never understood exactly where all the wires and tubes go. But it will probably be 6 to 10 months before I get that far!!

Sorry, Ausf, some images are just too vivid!! lol

Hmmm I know I have some links here for ya somewhere...how do I put a link on this reply page thing anyways??? I'll see what I can do.

Ospry amkes a small book ($19.95 I believe) on modelling the SBD Dauntless (SBD standing for slow but deadly Approve [^]). I have the ones for the Stang and the Spit and they are awesome.

The easiest way I've found to put a link on the page is to open another copy of my browser, go to the site, highlight the url in the address bar (make usr you get all of it from the http: through the last character, which may be off the screen to the right), then click back to the forum and your message post, and do a paste. (This, of course, if your using Windows. I don't know how you'd do it with a Mac, but I assume it's similar.)

And thanks;

Speaking of interiour green, how close is it in a dauntless to say what i used for my m113? i don't really have readily access to specific colors but I do have some lime green looking paint that I used for the 113.

There are 2 known colors, bronze green and med green for it, and neither are lime. Both are a dark flat color. The undersides of the dive flaps and regular flaps if you postioned both opened are red. nice looking plane when it all comes together.

Is Academy famous for not including any paint colors in their armor kits? I'm doing their Panzer IV Ausf H for the Reverse Build, or as I like to call it "The Tempting of the Dark Side". I have their 1/48 F-86F MiG Killer and it's awesome from the instructions down to the decals.

This kit is reportedly an old Tamiya release... the fit ain't the greatest, but that's what tarps, tents and other ground pounder gear is for, right? Anyways, it's fun doing an armor kit after no modeling for a decade... Most of you treadheads have been downright helpful, and it's appreciated. Anyways, here are a couple of progress shots... Please be kind :)

Decided to scratchbuild a little of the interior since the hatches (right?) on both sides of the turret are open. Some of the flyboys may recognize the part I used for the commander's chair.

Since the front two hatches are open I made simple compartments for the radio operator and driver, only a pair of seats for these two grunts!...

Looking good, Matt. Keep it up. The only Academy armor I've got is their Early Tiger I with full interior, and the paint callout on it is very inclusive (though not necessarily 100% correct!).

Okay, I'm ready (really) to start on my A.M. SBD-5. Can someone please give me a site that has a color picture of the interior. The AM instructions say to paint everything (just about) interior green. I have no idea what color all the switches and levers are supposed to be. I assume most would be flat black, but would guess some were red or maybe white. Thanks.

Are we starting this? It looks like the flyboys are in the final stages and I haven't even really looked at the kit yet.
Do we go? Is there a weather front moving in? I'm confused.

Bill,
It's the only color picture of the cockpit of a restored SBD in Chino, California. There are around 30 pics (sort of a mini walkaround), but this may help with your IP question.

Here's a B/W shot of the entire forward position to show the layout.

Here's the website for the walk around:

Thanks, Matt. That helps a lot. I hope I can find some shots of the sidewalls! If not, I'll just wing it, so to speak!! lol
