I think I'll have to bail on this GB. I just built my revell germany 1:72 red barron fokker triplane and that was the last of my unbuilt plane models. I've got a lot on my plate right now, I think I'll have to bail, but I might try to come back in later... Sorry, good luck everyone!

Joe from what I see it is a great kit in box. I have both tamiyas and dragons. You get more bang fo ryour buck with the dragon king tiger, the tamiya fits together great.
I havent started on dragons yet so cant say much. Also the dragon has PE grills where the tamiya you need to buy them seperate adding 10$ to the total.

well, i am not sure what i have gotten myself into now. the king tiger arrived today. wow, the beast is huge. my jaw dropped when it when i took it out of the shipping box. wow. i am just overwhelmed by the size. and heavy too. but, as i swallow loudly, onward. when do we start again????

I've got that one too, Joe. It's a cool kit. You're biggest challenge will probably be the zimmerit, as I understand all the Porsche Kings had zimm on them.
I'm looking forward to hearing about your build once this thing gets started (I still don't know when we're shooting for!).

ok. i opened it. took me about thirty minutes to get my breathing to calm down. man there is a lot of parts for this bad boy. wow. now i have to figure out a decent way to do zimmerite. and a relatively painless way.

Tamiya putty works great. there is also a zim kit from cavalie rthat is thin sheets of resin.Some dont like it I found it to work farely well. Here is a pic.

ron thanks for the suggestion. i dont have the tamiya putty only squadron green. i remember reading that a light coat of plastic glue can be used to soften the plastic enough to work the plastic.
gotta find that issue of fsm.

Here's another possibility, if you want to drop another $30 on the Tiger.
Atak Model has a full resin zimm kit out for it. Check Great Models and search for atk35025. It looks pretty inclusive! I might go that route. I'm not sure yet.
Softening the plastic with liquid cement and impressing the zimm pattern into it is a very daunting task, in 1/35, IMO. Squadron green putty can be used to do zimm, it just dries fast so you have to do small areas. Tamiya Polyester Putty gives you a little more work time. Other possibilities areMilliput (there's a thread pointing to an article on doing it floating around here somewhere), Apoxie Sculpt (Aves), and Zimm it Rite (RJ Products). Aves usually has an advert in FSM, if you want to look them up.
One thing about this kit that's kind of weird, there's a big insert that goes on the left side of the turret, right under the commanders cupola. It has a pistol port molded on it, I believe, so is probably so they can do other versions without it. (It would have been better to just mold the port as a separate part, I think.) Anyway, it probably won't be a big deal since that area will/should be zimmed over anyway.
I got out just about every plane in my stash I could lay my hands on yesterday. I went over all the instructions. I have so many low end kits with no cockpit detail (or even no cockpit at all), I can't believe it. I guess I'll do on of the Accurate Miniatures or Hasagewa kits I have. At least they have decent to great detail! But still, I'm not doing an NMF!

Joe, Tamiya makes these neat little zimmerit tools, about $8-9.
Sorry, I wasn't aware of the start date, just assumed it did. We should post build dates in the subject line, so people will know without inquiring all the time.
Best advice on the tracks is to take your time. I admit they scared me to death, but found them to be easy. Some people like to use a homemade jig to align them. I just make about 15-20 link sections them wrap them around the drive sprocket and head towards the idler and work my way back to the drive sprocket. Seems to work well. I prefer Testors liquid cement to allow time to set and still be flexible.

ron the problem im running into is i have already blown my alotted money for this month and the paint order i have for next month blows it. i think i may end up using the squadron putty and doing small areas. it should work ok, just timeconsuming. wait i think i have something time consuming now that i am working on.

Yes indeed the testors liquid cement is great it gives more flex time. I know the feeling Joe.Mine is all used up as well.I found squadron putty hard touse, I hope you have better luck.
