Today I cut out the engine bell bases molded into the shuttle assembly.

Here are some possible configurations:

This configuration is how the model comes and in-between the engine is a hatch.

Using three, in-line.

Using three but in a triangle configuration.

With other structures cut from the shuttle assembly.

I kind of like them all. What you guys think? See any preferences?

I am close to painting something. There is more to do with the firewall but at this point I can safely paint the engine bells.

No rush. Plenty of other things to do before I have to make the decision. And don't feel you are obligated to answer.  I don't mean to put anyone on the spot.

Thanks Gregy.

Like everyone else, I am passing time. Not much of an imposition having your engine configuration on the back of my mind.

It took me 2 days to get logged in to this site. I "attempted" to block the ad's and I guess I shot myself in the foot. I had to go through my Java script setting's , AGAIN, ( remember last year when I had to get a new computer ??? ) and reset a bunch of UNWANTED cookie's, but now I'm back

With Firefox, you can add in NoScript, which will keep much junk away, but, you have to watch it, to allow certain things, one at a time, or you lose (or won't see) content.

The alternative is to use the FF Private Browsing feature; you are not anonyous, but no history is recorded (just remember to run a cleaner to scrub out cookies and temp files--I use CCleaner).
If very concerened, use one of the anonymmizer sites and then use Private Browsing.

In full disclosure, I also run Zone Alarm as a firewall and Trend Micro for AV.

And, still, every so often Kalmbach finds ways to be fussy.

I took off work today for Good Friday, did a little work. BTW. Happy Good Friday everyone!

Yeah, emailed and texted by work to do more work (WFH) on a day we are normally sent home early upon.  With passive-aggressive imlications of being lazy and shiftless.  [rude sailor language]

This plague thing is annoying.  For the last 20-something years, I've used Good Friday as a day to go out an photograph the Texas wildflowers

Not so much this year, and we are having a bumper crop across the state, near the huge peak we had in 2008.

But, the dogs required that I not be sad, or work that hard.  Even if it was until after 1700 [less rude sailor language].

Oh yeah, back to modeling.

The three in line jibes with my memory of the ship.  If possibly wanting some smaller, nozzles fit in-between (but that could just be fickle memory and Kerbal Space habits).

I also vote for the Three  engine bell's in a line. ( it makes it look more like an "intersteller" spacecraft, as opposed to a " never leaves the solar system orbital lander" spacecraft. )

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

That is an excellent point, Tim. It's funny. If I was forced to choose, the in-line configuration was my favorite. I couldn't put my finger on why that is, but I think your explanation nails it. You have good instincts sir. When are your going to start building again? It would be great to see some Timmy creations.

Thanks for responding, Tim.

I have no memory of it but I for sure like the inline option. And I tell ya, I like your idea for some smaller nozzles fit in-between. I dread the idea of locating some. Maybe I can use the smaller ones that came with the shuttle. I will explore that.

Thanks for responding Capn!

I discovered something today. As I was test fitting the tub I noticed the instrument panels did not line up against the window rails. No matter what I tried, I could not position it in a way where I wouldn't get a noticeable gap. This was befuddling me. No way I did such a crummy job. I remembered I had those panels aligned perfectly. Then it hit me. Early on I smeared epoxy to the underside of the assembly to strengthen the piece. What I believe happened is that the epoxy contracted, thus pulling the assembly out of alignment.

I wouldn't have figured this out if I didn't run across this scenario during my Seaview build. In that case, I smeared epoxy between the picture frame and the clear plexiglass layer to secure the two. Over time, I began to notice the entire frame began to bow. At first I thought the warp must have been there all along, but as the months progressed, the problem became worse. Eventually, and for various reasons, I pulled up the plexy. With each area I glued I'd hear a pop, and they released easily, like it was under lateral tension. Once I had the plexiglass completely free, guess what? The bow was completely gone. Long story short... be careful how you use epoxy.

I had to do some reconstruction but it's fitting nicely now.

Thought my woe could be a learning moment for an unsuspecting builder.

I have a confession to make.

I have been "cheating" on you guy's..... ( sort of...)

I have been so busy with homesteading chore's that I havent been able to get my shop in usable condition. So I "confiscated" the coffie table in our livingroom, and have been building model trains on it for the past month.  ( I have also been hanging out on the Model Train's forum, which is also a Kalmbach site so I havent really been cheating.)

What I'm working on at the moment, is a "Scratch-bash" water tender. ( Two of them actually.)

I "hi-jack your thread enough as it is, so I won't flood your thread with my picture's. But, if you "really really" want to see a pile of my stuff it's here...

Pert near two years with some twists and turns, and I have my first paint.

I decided to create my own flavor of alloy. In this case it is a Copper/Tungsten alloy. Well, at least in my head it is. Wink The paint is a mix of Alclad Copper and Alclad Aluminum. I did a little weathering as well using weathering powders. It is subtle but that is what I was shooting for.  Oh--I need to seal them too but I discovered that I am out of Dullcote. With the stores closed I will need to order it on-line.

That's all.

I would like to change my engine exhaust thingie configuration vote, please.

littletimmy
( it makes it look more like an "intersteller" spacecraft, as opposed to a " never leaves the solar system orbital lander" spacecraft. )

I had considered that, but thought the triangle config "Looked better". Defintely considered the 3-in-line and it is more 'interstellar' as Timmy said, or in my own thoughts "up is rightside up". Then I went into Carlton Blanchard (think the old TV series "Wings") mode and asked self "But, how can up be up in space???"

The Carlton part of me won out at the time, but as I said, changed my mind. 3 in a row.

In these confused time, this is critical stuff we are discussing here and I felt it extremely important to post this reversal of opinion ASAP to make my vote matter. Otherwise, the future of humankind could be forever altered.

Hey thanks Greg!  Amazing what a little paint can do. Oh--and a little shaping and cleanup work.

Btw. I found out that our local HobbyTown was open. When I got there though I was greeted with sign, curbside pickup orders only. Doh! Good thing I brought the cell. I called from the lot and within minutes out came my Dullcote.

I almost rely on being able to do that, here of late.  Felt relly brazen, the first time I was just sitting in an Office Depot parking lot ordering things that were only four fathoms away.

But, they delivered my stuff right out to me.

That's nice about the curbside pickup. Did you have to physically hand them cash or your credit card?

You just made me check my local Hobbytown and it looks like they are back to curbside pickup now too. So my online panic hoard buying of Tamiya thin was an expensive exercise in futilty after all.

Edit: and they have the Tamiya orange bottle thick stuff in stock. I'm so excited, mine is backordered from somewhere half around the world and isn't due for a month or 2. You da man, thank you.

Hey Greg, good deal. Glad this helped you! Yeah, I was pretty surprised to see their website had them as open. I checked the Hobby Lobby's too and they all show temporarily closed.

I had the option to pay by credit card or cash. If by CC, the owner would come out with his scanner along with the product. I had exact change available, so to make it easier for everyone, I gave them cash. Doing cash allowed the employee I was talking to the ability to bring it out. Knowing the owner and how he rolls, I figured cash would be faster for me.

You just reminded me too what other thing I should be picking up soon, Tamiya Extra Thin. Mine is getting low. I wish I had thought of that when I was there. Ah well.

Amen, Capn. It feels weird for sure. My first experience was at a Best Buy to pick up some printer ink. And guess what. After getting my Dullcote today I drove over to get more black ink for my printer. Pert near gone now with my meager amount of printing. Ah, but that sorry tale is already discussed.

It feels weird but I wonder if this will start a whole new way that businesses serve the customer. The food industry has been doing it a long time but office supply? Not so much. It is awfully convenient to drive up and be handed your product. Something tells me customers are gonna like it. At least for the people that know what they want, and it does not require shopping.

That question has been posed by some serious thinking folk under the Thread Title. After Coronoa, What will be Different?

In 1920, many people moved off farms and into the cities.  Perhaps the reverse will be true a centruy later.

Off that topic.  One smaller thrusters, they probably want to be near flush to the big ones, probably an array of four arouns the center one.  Probably your best bet is to extend them off the engine bulkhead on tubing, perhaps greebled tubing.  That sort of thing has a real-life name:  vernier rockets, typically used for imparting steering so as to skip gimbaling the larger motors.

Now, as a real gem, this just popped up in my YT feed.  Location shote in thena nd now format from the original!  For sure, enlarge this.  Some cockpit details, and plenty of dio ideas, too.

Interesting. I could see that as especially true if the world population gets decimated.

I had seen the video you posted but I watched it again. Thanks for posting it. I am sure others will find it interesting too.

Thanks for the tip about the smaller thrusters. I will look into making something that elevates them. Good tip, and I would have missed that if you didn't mention it. But unfortunately, the shuttle kit only has two of the smaller thrusters, so I am limited to two.

I am also trying to think of ways to dress up the outward facing side of the bulkhead. Maybe some supporting beams or something. It just looks kind of bare, even with the engines on them.

I had the option to pay by credit card or cash. If by CC, the owner would come out with his scanner along with the product.

I was afraid that was the case.

Long rant simplified, bigger cities and progressive towns (which mine sure as hootin' ain't) have online pay for almost everything. I commend local businesses offering curbside pickup, and as you guys are discussing this thing probably will change the future of shopping, but half-way isn't good enough and unless pre-pay or contactess pay (smart phone or chip reader) is provided, I'm taking a pass).

That said, watch hypocritical me go to my Hobbytown anyway with a gallon of hand sanitizer riding shotgun, and $4 or whatever (keep the change, please) on the seat too, cuz I want me my Tamiya orange bottle glue!! (spoken in the best corn-pickin', Indianerrr drawl I can muster)

Edit: It just occured to me that I would probably bend my personal boundaries even further for a roll of toilet paper.

Hey Greg--he was wearing gloves. Does that help? Chuckle.

Hey--don't give up just yet. I'd recommend you call the store and ask. They might be able to manually enter the CC number into the scanner over the phone. Then all you'd have is them bringing it out. Please do that and report back.  This is your Bakster assignment for the day.

On another note. Please educate me on your love for the Tamiya Orange.  What do you like about it? I have not tried it.
