I just figured, "you went to all the trouble to build an interior, you might as well put some people in there ".

Yup. I agree.

littletimmy
( plus, I'm DYING to see what you come up with for a Mumifyied woman.)

At this scale, I would not expect too much. I will certainly try though.  I did a test cast on a similarly sized figure and the first go was not too bad. I used melted sprue for the casting material. I broke a foot off extricating it, but I think I didn't have enough material in the mold, and that weakened it. Not to mention plastic is not all that strong to begin with. Next, I will try a cast using epoxy, and see how that goes. Ultimately, I will need to dismember the arms, hands, and legs to reposition them. Even in the movie the crew has all their limbs pulled together in a tight fit, and my model will be the same just to fit them in. So, I need the ability to repop the figures with any potential screwups.

Meanwhile, the figures are ordered. Knowing how this place ships, it could be a couple weeks before I get them. Below is what I ordered. It is the closest I could find to the crew uniforms. $10 for the set, not too bad considering what places sell HO figures for.

Thanks for the information on the Puduo

You are welcome.

I tried casting some stuff a few years ago and really wasn't impressed by the results.

Yeah-- same here but this stuff gets me a "little" closer to it.

The Icarus is looking really good!!!

Thanks for the additional Stuckey's info, Capn.

Back to Radio Shack for a sec....

But, they had "stuff." Often stuff you had not imagined you needed.

You nailed that one. One of the greatest joys of a Radio Shack visit was leaving with a bag full of stuff I probably didn't even know existed. Browsing was way more fun than finding what we went to buy.

And Big Boy, Steve. Oh yeah. There are a couple not too far north of me in MI, and in the summer sometimes I'll road trip for a Big Boy Platter.

Grain of wheat lamps, LEDS, reed switches, roller switches, diodes, resistors, capacitors, Oh My! Also, small breadboard "learning" kits that could have all sorts of repurposing.  Like motion detecting, or being light sensitive.

One of my high school "Electronic's " project's was built with part's from Radio Shack.

( it was a TV jammer....... which I took GREAT DELIGHT in using at the Montgomery Ward's television department. I would wait for the salesman to go into his "this one is state of the art " speech, and hit the button . POOF.... static ! )

I've had some internet issues lately...

It's not you and your jammer is it Timmy!?!?!

Oh, and there was a comparison earlier to Paydays. My all time favorite candy bar. I see it now.

You know what is funny? Years back I took a road trip and I think I tried one of these. Until I captured the image I didn't know what it was we are talking about. I remember thinking that it looks like a Payday. When I tried it, I remember thinking, "yuck! This is aweful." I threw it out. I was so disappointed.

Now I want you guys to try it. Get your thoughts.

Lol. Hey, you have to try it just to find out.

I remember my first bite. It was like, "what the heck is this? After choking down the first bite I thought," there is no way it tastes this bad. I must be imagining it." So I took another bite. Well, the second bite confirmed it. It WAS that bad. Into the garbage it went.

The one Stuckeys I was aware of in Wi closed many years ago now. Too bad. Like so many childhood places, they are no longer around. Like Big Boys, Shakeys Pizza, drive in theatres,

The shell of a former Stucky's stands o nthe east side of I-35 just south of Waxahatchie (pronounced "waulks uh ha CHEE"), the shape of the place is about all that remaines.

There used to be another one on I-45 near the Italy exit, but it's been torn down for donkey's years, now.  There's another one on I-45 just outside of Richland, but it's been a bbq joint and an 'adult' bookstore and gas station.

There was a Big Boys at the edge of Highland Park, TX on Preston Road. if memory serves, it was the last one in DFW.  There had been one not that many blocks from my folks' house in North Dallas, and we ate there middling regular.

Drive-Ins still exist.  But they are "boutique."  The old Galaxy, which had been deep in North Dallas with its six screens, was recreated, with six screens, down on I-45 wedged between Palmer and Ennis.  The Coyote Drive In is still doing business just north of downtown Fort Worth.  Afficianados keep the limited number of venues open.

Now, for long-lost, let us remember Steak and Ale. Split up into Oxford Street and Steak and Ale, one store survived, over in Grand Prairie, until about a decade ago, until the last remaing owner retired.

You know what else is funny? As far as I know there is only one active drive in movie theatre here in Wisconsin. Which one would it be? It is the very one that started me on this Icarus journey. It is the very one where I had seen The Planet of the Apes. So if I want to see a movie at a drive in, I need to drive 120 miles to do it.

When I was growing up we had 5 drive in movie theatres in the Milwaukee area, 4 of them on the south side where we lived, and all 5 closed many years ago. I am nostalgic for them now, but then, they were sort of a mixed bag. Poor audio, poor picture quality, often hot in the summer heat, and worst of all, the dreaded mosketos. Often, we'd need to keep the windows up to keep the bugs out, and that gets uncomfortable on those dog days of summer. None the less, many fun times.

I loved the Big Boy burger. It's like a Big Mac, only better.

Hmm, I love pecan logs. Never had a Stuckly's one though. We get them in the grocery around Christmas so I've always considered them a seasonal item. Last one I had was from Cracker Barrel.

And gee, we had a Steak and Ale near here. For some wierd zoning rule they couldn't use 'Ale' in the name so they changed the name to The Blue Ox.* They shut down decades ago though, I just remember the odd zoning rule.

*Edit: Okay, The JOLLY Ox, my mistake...

Our Steak and Ale closed in 2008, I just found an article online. Seems like it was longer ago.

Neat place, I remember the dark, Olde English motif. The food was good, too. Another one of those treasures we had, lost, and I wonder why I wasn't a better patron.

Our Steak and Ale closed in 2008

That's late in the cycle.

Resorted to wiki.  Learned stuff.

Norm Brinker started the chain in 1966.  Sold out to Pillsbury in 1976 who lumped it in with Bennigans, Burger King, and Poppin Fresh Pies.  The alternate name for Steak and Ale was Jolly Ox.  1982, Pillsbury spun off the whole thing as the S&A Restaurant Group.  Metromedia merged in 1988 adding in all the Ponderosa and Bonanza branches, too.
In there, the "excess" venues were dropped, with employees being offered the dropped stores, which became Oxford Street.  S&A Restaurant Corp operated until 2008 until going into Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

The Oxford Street in Bryan was a "spiff" joint for going "out" to.  They had these dark as pumpernickle wheat bread loaves that were served with supper.  They made the leftovers into croutons for the salad bar.  Very reliable prime rib, if never with yorkshire pudding.

Indeed. Interesting stuff, I enjoy that sort of thing.

I had no idea Ponderosa and Bonanza were related to Steak and Ale. Such fond memories of the aforementioned two.

First I'd heard of the Oxford Street brand, and what an interesting raison d'existence.

I love a good prime rib, and there are few places to find it any more. At least up here in backwards northern Indiahn-er.

Hey, I'll bet we'll never be meloncholically musing about good 'ol lost McDonalds over morning coffee one day, though. It'll probably still be here when civilization ends, which is good, because I like Big Macs. Stick out tongue

Big Macs and perhaps Pecan Logs, who knows. Hmm, sounds good........

Same here. I miss all the old Supper Clubs we had. What a shame. Those were the days when a person could have a true dining experience. We had a few good ones, and one in particular where their prime ribs and filets melted in your mouth.

I wish I had the ability to teleport back in time. I'd like to relive some of those moments. I wouldn't want to stay there, just visit. Wouldn't that be cool? Step into a machine and be projected back. And maybe with the option to teleport back to the body you had then? Now THAT, would be a cool vacation.

Btw. Capn mentioned Ponderosa. Wow. That is a blast from the past. I was much poorer then and we'd order the basic steak meal. The meat sort of looked like a steak, sort of tasted like a steak, but I wasn't sure it actually was steak. Zip it! I never wanted to drop a coin for their more expensive steak meals because I feared getting something similar, whilst I bended over at the cash register. I did really like their salad bar though.

PS: I am hoping for paint to arrive today. I can then paint and finish the door frames. I hope to have an update this weekend.

Yeah, I'd love a time machine. I'd be awesome to spend a day back in 1985 or so. Not change anything or yell at the dummy I was back then but just take a vacation in time.

But I'm not sure about being stuck in the body I had back then. Because I wanna see DINOSAURS and I didn't have a body back then. Or would it stick me in the body of the critter that I would evolve from? Being a shrew like critter doesn't sound like much fun...

No. Early 1980s would be cool. Steve of today could enter my body back then and I'd tell the Steve of that day.... "Hey dude, step aside. Let me show you how this is done."

I would bring some wealth me because that sorry sap doesn't have any money.

Just be careful what money you take back!

I'm reminded of the 1980 movie 'Somewhere in Time' where Christopher Reeve goes back in time to have a romance with the stunning Jane Seymour. The ending, well I won't spoil it but be careful what you take back with you...

Buddy, I already have that figured out. Surprise I bring some gold from 2020 and once there in the 1980s, I covert it to 1980s currency. Bang! Stevie is set to have some fun.

Paint did not arrive today, maybe tomorrow. Snail mail at work.

Some of you may recall when I purchased a 100 piece figure set back when I was working on Icarus 1. I recently went through that set and of the 100, there was 1 figure that appears close to the scale I need. Unfortunately, it is a guy in swim trunks. He kind of reminds me of the dude in ads of yesteryear...

Anyhow, as I wait for the other set to arrive, I thought it a good time to do some testing. I tried using various things to cast the figure. They all worked, and they all have plus and minuses. I think the cleanest cast came from the Puduo. The easiest cast that performed well is the sprue-goo. Though, there is some pitting here and there. My goal in all this was to find out what casts well, what is easy, and what will be durable enough to handle the cutting and reassembling that I will do. The jury is still out but I am leaning towards the sprue-goo. It is easy to cast, cut, sand, and manipulate.

Regarding your figure casting, your imagination seems to know no bounds. Good for you.

Not just there.

Dallas used to have "Victoria Station" which was a collection of rail cars (prominently featuring a bright red ATSF caboose).  They pretty much only served prime rib.  They also had Yorkshire pudding.  Miss that joint.

Dallas has a couple of old-timely steak joints (like Dunsten's) that can serve all sorts of steaks (and some hoity-toity "foodie" places with prime rib).  However, they all pale before the glory that is Fort Worth's Hoffbrau (and a certain downtonw joint I'm not sharing Smile).

I, too have paint arriving by delivery.  Alas, it's house paint.

I hope you got yours because mine didn't show up. Mine probably got kicked across the floor at some mail facility. Or got put in some truck stored away in order to make the numbers look good. Or maybe, it got ground up in the joins of the mail belt track. I can say all that because I had seen all this happen when I did a part time stint at the US Postal. I had even seen a guy sleep in a mail cart while us temps worked our tails off. He didn't even try to hide it. When asked, aren't you afraid you will get fired? The guy says, "naw. The union will protect me." I even had a union guy tell me to slow down, that I was working too hard. He said this as a group of them sat watching us work. All true. Needless to say, I didn't stay there long.

No. I am sure the order is coming.

Dropped the buckets off at the door, and only got a glimpse of the orange truck as it was turning the corner.

Ugh.
