The Starfleet Museum group build

Andrew, very nice. ne of these and with more experience I will figure out how to get things look as smooth and as round as you guys do. I can't belive you can do it with sand paper unless it is attached to a lathe of some kind. Again, very nice job on both.

Very nice... If I may ask, what did you use for the main hull elliptical shapes?

Thanks. It might be, I don't recall. What I do recall is that it is highly detailed and a beautiful little model.

Way to go Larry. Despite the issues it looks to have turned out just fine. Is that resin kit you mentioned the Ravenstar 1:1400 scale?

Finally, here are some pics.

There are things I'm happy about, and things I'm not so happy about.

Happy: the detailing looks ok, the use of pastels to make the cruiser look battleworn was pretty effective, the battle damage from the Romulan Bird of Prey looks all right.

Unhappy: the cheesy window decals silvered hugely, the dullcoate I applied came out of the can sputtering, and pooled on the left superstructure, the kit is basically a poor one, requiring lots and lots of sanding and puttying to get a clean fit.

Overall, I'm unhappy with it, largely because some finishing (the poor decals and the malfunctioning can of dullcote) ruined the final apperarance of the kit. I mostly just left it as is to finish by the end date (ironic when you consider how late I'm posting these pics) -- I wonder if I should just strip it and start over, and just paint the windows on? Is there some way to make silvering go away post application of the decals?

Or I might just give it to my son to play with, and buildup that beautiful little K'Tinga in resin I got on the net a while back ....

Lets see here...

1) Nothing tough. I'll probably just pencil them in. I have different sizes of PVC pipe that I can place around it at the right places and pencil in "circular" lines around the sphere. I take a paintbrush and streak the lines backward to give it the "weathered" look, and then clearcote over it to seal it... worked on my TOS ships. I thought about lathing them on before i started attaching all the pieces, but my lathe sits one inch high, and the spheres are an inch in diameter, so the spheres wouldn't turn in the lathe...

2) the conic shape at the front of the engineering section? I have two options. I have a MIR Space Station with some conic sections I can use. The other option for me is to make the section out of clay and "thermoform the piece (melt plastic sheet styrene over a mold). That's probably what I'll do... I tried lathing it, but the solid plastic doesn't carve well in my weak@$$ lathe.

3) I'll put some rings on mine, just cause it makes it look more convincing. Kinda like the O-Rings on the Shuttle's SRB's. I'm using orthodontic rubber bands (3/16") for the rings. there won't be as many rings on mine, but enough to give the effect.

Captain_Mills: I have a couple of questions if you do not mind? 1. How are you going to scribe in the lines on the primary hull sections for the exterior plating and windows? I have been stirring about this problem for awhile even though my build has not even made it to the physical stage yet. 2. On the Secondary Hull (I hope I am naming these section right), main round tube, the front section is a reducer type shape. I was also wondering how you were going to make that shape? I looked in my Plastruct catalog and found reducers (concentric) but the sizes did not match the size I need. I ran out of ideas especially when I do not have a lathe to make my own. 3. I noticed from the USS Daedalus on the Museum website compared to the USS Daedalus class in the Encyclopedia that on one there are rings around the nacelles and secondary hull but in the encyclopedia there are no rings. Which one were you planning on making?

Sorry for the length of these questions. Since I have not been able build it or even attempt it yet, I have been kind of building it on paper as to what steps I would need to build this class starship. Thanks for your post of pics, very nice so far on all your projects.

Captain_Mills - I would love to see some pics on the Daedalus. I was (am) going to build one as soon as funds come and in-debtedness goes away. Word of advice to all, do not use a credit card for hobbies, it will get you into a mess every time. Sorry everyone for not having anything started yet.

Maxx, thanks for your confidence. Anyway, I had started the Daedalus a long time ago, before the group build began. It was a project I wanted to work on to have another ship to go with my 1:1000 scale PL ships and conversions.

The Wasp began when the groupbuild did, and it's my 2nd favorite ship, behind the Daedalus, that I like in Masao's SFM. I've tried turning that engineering section on my lathe, with no success.

I haven't decided yet, but I better quickly! It'll be either a Kretchet or Amarillo. I'm leaning more toward the Amarillo at this point. We'll see.

Both are D-7. But the TOS is 14 meters longer than the TMP K Tinga. Not to mention all the really cool detail they added to the movie version.

Larry are you building the Polar Lights D-7 right? or was it the AMT K'Tinga (thats still a D-7 right or is it a whole new class that looked like a D-7) ?

I was looking it over yesterday and couldn't come up with anything part wise that would work. Not to say there isn't something out there just not in my stash. Turning it does seem the best way to get it though.

So are you going with the Daedalus or something in the Kretchet or Amarillo class? I'm sure it will come out great whichever you chose

Hi Everyone! I sure wish I had known about this group Museum build alot sooner than today 6/22/05! I would loved to have gotten in on it! Oh well there is always next year! All the projects look great so far! Keep up the great work guys.

How much of the Wasp do you have and what scale are you working in Captain M? Maybe there is a way we can come up with that secondary.

Unless anyone has any suggestions, the engineering section of the Wasp will have to be delayed until I can mold & vacuuform it. I just can't seem to get the shape right.

Unless anyone objects, or is already building one, I'll switch my Wasp to either a Kretchet or Amarillo class. THAT, I can finish in a week!

well let me know what you think of these the paint I used is as close to the TOS paint as I could get.

My A/C was finally repaired so I put the pastels on the battlecruiser last night.

I am working on the display base, the one right out of the kit, and will finish it up in a day or two.

I'm way behind myself so by all means continue on. I've had a lot going on and most recently I've had to put resin kit masters ahead of my personal builds. My master patterns for my 1/1000 starliner should be done by the end of June but I've been hard pressed to find time for my Avenger.
