given the dearth of pre ww2 plastic kits why not steel navy pre-ww1? that would include EMDEN, DRESDEN, DREANOUGHT, the KONIGs, russo-japanses war (mikasa AND various BORODINOs), sino-japanese war ( TING YUEN, CHEN YUEN, CHING YUEN, CHIH YUEN) but not civil war ironclads.

and it looks like combrig is coming out with 1/350 resins but they are rather pricey.

I'd be up for that.

Also the Varyag.

I have a Combrig Scharnhorst, yes it cost a fortune, and I was planning to paint it pre war white and buff, so that is what I'm in with:

1/350 Combrig full hull SMS Scharnhorst.

Unless this is a plastic only build, in which case Mikasa

If the Admiral doesn't mind, I'd like to post pictures of the Emden which is about 80%.

Pity about the USN Navy, I guess they were out of business at the time. Oregon, Olympia and Maine, all idiosyncratic kits and in the case of the Maine, junk.

Lots available in resin, of course.

Manstein's revenge

Yeah, Vance is already saving his paper napkins and chapstik tubes...

Word around the campfire is that he's using chopped up soda cans and the tongue depressors he "borrowed" when he visited Granny in the hospital.

I have many books and my Lair smells of rich mahogany!!! Stay thirsty my fellow MOJOs!

Manstein's revenge

Coming Soon:

http://images.kitlink.com/Products/images/Bronco/BOM5016.JPG

Mine came in yesterday and I must say that I was overwhelmed with the "coolness factor" of this kit...I have NEVER seen anything like it...it is the MUCH cooler than the "Protected Crusier" I got a few weeks ago...

Looking at the instructiions and sprues, it reminded me of the movie, "WILD WILD WEST" in that it has that weird look of "19th century meets 20th century" or "steampunk technology"...can be built as launched, or how she looked when she took part in the Battle of the Yalu River...Really a cool ship for anyone interested in naval subjects, IMO...

Hmmm...really "steam punk"!

I think I'm going to order one as well. It also really cries out for a wood deck, although I generally don't like the things.

these guys make wood decks for it. i have not seen their decks but have a wood deck for both 1/72 u-boats and a 1/350 emden from Nautilus (i think) and they are nice. my big problem is cutting off all the deck furniture w/o screwing it up. maybe that's why i have more than one kit.

Those things are pretty expensive tho...

Is there a difference in the two Stettin cruiser kits? One cost about $ 20 more than the other.

I ordered the KA deck and from what I've seen in pics it appears to have cut-outs for the deck furniture already on the sheets...almost cost as much as the kit...

Trust me on this one...this is one of the finest injection-molded kits I've ever seen...the detail and crispness is amazing and a large PE sheet is included with all railings and other delicate parts...

...can be builts as launched or as configured right before the Yalu River Battle, where turret tops, boats and other other deck fittings were removed to reduce splinter risk...if you build it this way then you can see all 4 of the massive 305mm cannon!!!  This MOJO even has two early steam driven torpedo decks on the aft deck that were lowered into the water during battle!!!

If you like ships you gotta get this for its historical and COOLNESS factor...

As a fan of this period of naval architecture and design, I've been looking forward to these Bronco kits as well as this:

Here are some parts tree photos.

Cheers, Aaron

Indeed, and that one's for sale at Freetime Hobbies as well.

So is the Chen different from the Ting (kits). The decks look the same, but the 5016 and 5017 kits don't cost the same. I'm inclined to buy the cheaper one (Ting) because then I can afford the deck.

Bondo, although I can't swear on it I'd say that the two ships are identical as far as the kits go---when I priced 'em it was the other way around and also the Chen was the only one I could find anywhere in stock, and I got the last one.  I was guessing the Ting was more expensive because it was the flagship of the force at the battle and therefore more popular; indeed it sold out first at Great Models...they were sister ships and built in Germany by Krupp...you won't regret it...

EDIT earlier post...torpedo boats on aft deck...

Aaron, thanks for increasing my stash by one more ship!!!

the white "turret tops" were only 1 inch sheet metal and sonsidered more dangerous from splintering than not having them..

OK, order posted for the Ting.

Borodinos carried two torpedo boats as well. Aft of the second funnel.

Torpedo boats and destroyers were a much larger part of early twentieth century navy strategy  than previous.

Witness the battle of Jutland where the two fleets ran in circles avoiding possible destroyer torpedo attacks, and for good reason because each had 40 to 60 destroyers deployed in an area the size of a quarter of the Gulf of Mexico.

Zvezda, and get the Varyag because the good PE set from WEM comes with both ships.

Bought the Ting. Bought the deck too. Big deal, I don't like wood decks.

Your Borodino is sweet...you can see a lot of similarities between it and these Chinese vessels...it looks to be one geberation ahead of them, however...

Yep, knew that. Just thought it was cool to see these ships being joined by a kit that connects the dots between periods. Sorry for the off-topic post.

Severely tempting. My experience with Zvezda's ships (2 of them) has been that they are very good.

Good to know---I have 2 aircraft from them that are above average but have never bought a Zvezda ship.  I wonder when an etch set will be available...

picked up the wood deck at NATS. it is wafer thin and has the cutouts to slip over the deck furniture and self adhere to the plastic deck. looks like it has a bunch of pe circles, probably for coal scuttles.

also bought a bunch of other stuff i guess i really needed.

Are you sure? I believe it is the GMM that comes with both ships and WEM has separate sets.

don't know about WEM but GMM is a two in one.
