Converting the 1/96 Cutty Sark into the Glory of the Seas

Well I built and added the forward and main starboard channels..the paint is still wet....

Tomorrow, I'll mount the channels.  I won't secure the masts as of yet..since I need to mount the deadeyes for the top shrouds first while the mast can be removed.

This build can be posted in the scratch build forum as well...since I built every part of this model..cept the two hull haves(that I heavely modified anyway).

Finished the mizzen mast.....now onto the channels.

I worked a bit on the mill and milled out the recesses for the composite mast..tomorrow..I will strap nd paint the recesses.  Then I will build the tops.....and paint black.  Should take several hours.

Well..I came up with a solution.  I made a wooden shelf from spare parts in the shop and then made a black base for the Glory..easy..peasy.  

Now I need to finish with the mizzen mast.

I think the Glory is well displayed now.

I have to  build some sort of stand for this model........I have an old weathered wood clarinet case that would make a hansom base for the model....???? Hmmmm what to do?

Second mast finished...well ..to the topmast anyway.

I love these masts..they are far more characteristic then just plain round masts.

I built this entirely from scratch...no CS parts used.  The British design is far unlike the American, I just couldn't use any parts.  Now I have to build 2 more.  I stopped the paint on the top mast so I can finish building and gluing the rest without paint on it......I'll need to turn down the royal masts on the lathe to get that nice taper.  Touch ups will always be in order.

Well I finished up the first parts of the main mast.  Painted the composite mast and bands...build the upper trees and tops.....now I have to do it again 2 more times......sweewww.

This is a lot of work for a mast...but there just isn't any way to achieve the results without the work needed.  I tried first actually gluing all the 5 components and turning on my lathe....way too much work...so I then devised a way to use the mill and I milled in all four grooved recesses in the round stock...then I banded...filled in the space with wedges(Like the prototype then painted.

I then built the tops as desribed in my material..and there you go.

I worked on the 5 piece composite masts today......pix tomorrow.

I'm encouraged.......most of the postings I make are rendered for instruction as well as a record of the build.  I enjoy when people build models that they themselves find fascinating and are not readily available on the market.  Plus I love dioramas..depicting the model in some action associated with that particular models history.

My conversions are my favorite thing to do..to take existing tooled kits and modify them to my own purpose.  It does require some extra skill and probably more so......ambition.

I appreciate everyone's comments and input...and I hope my builds have encouraged others to *create* for themselves the model they desire.

The original design even called for a life ring mounted on the aft portion of the helm shack.

I'll add windows(Liquid windows) a bit later.

I added the helm and helm shack...I like American clippers.......they had some neat design elements.

Thanks Bill......I have no other examples to draw from..cept a couple online versions that I wouldn't consider scale. Still..I have the original plans to work from......I prefer Donald McKays original layout.

I think my next build will be Donald McKays GREAT REPUBLIC.  That means I will have to take 2 Cutty Sark hulls and cut and combine them..to give me the correct hull length...then I will scratch built it as well.....with utilization of as much CS deck gear as possible to compliment the scratch original parts I will have to build.

But I digress...

I will add the egress/degress ladders and the starboard pins in the pinrail(I already added the Port pins)

I am really enjoying your build! I love your conversions of the basic Cutty Sark kit.  As I said earlier, I have four of these kits and might try to emulate you! And, don't be too hard on yourself; I think that you are doing very well!
