Posting Images with Photobucket
How to post images using a web based image hosting site.

This tutorial is created to help with posting pictures to the FSM Forum. I use Photobucket (www.photobucket.com), but Imageshack and others will be similar in use. Photoshop is free, and only requires registering before you can begin.

Obviously you first need an image to upload, this tutorial presumes that you have already have a picture saved onto your computer's hard drive. I have a folder called Photobucket which stores the images I want uploaded on my desktop. Once you've saved the image you want posted, you have to login to your Photobucket account.

You DO remember your password, don't you? Whistling [:-^]

Once logged in you need to start adding images to your account. You can have different folders within your account, or just keep everything in the default folder. Begin by browsing for an image. You can also browse for multiple images, if that's what you want. Note that you still have to browse for each image individually. This option merely uploads the images to Photobucket all at once.

Locate the image you have on your computer.

You can add a title to the image which helps in organizing your folders, and then push the "Upload" button.

You will get an "Upload Successful" screen when completed.

So now you have successfully uploaded an image to Photobucket. Congratulations!! Now we'll work on getting that image into the forum. Within Photobucket, find the image you want uploaded, you want to select the IMG tag which is at the bottom. Photobucket assumes you want that copied.

Now go to the forum where you want the image and paste it into the message screen. You can either right click and choose paste, or use "Control" & "V" to paste the image. You should see something like this.

When you've completed your post, you can preview it and once satisfied post the message and image to the forums for all to enjoy.

And that's it. It's a pretty simple process.

Photobucket does offer a free service, which is fine for the casual user.  But the $25.00/year membership gives you almost unlimited picture size & bandwidth, so if you do a lot of pics & posting, it's well worth the $$.

Also, just so you guys and gals know... you can download a free graphics program called GIMP which is located here --> Click to Learn More

Then you can resize all your images and do some neat tricks w/ it. Comparable to Photoshop if you wanna go the cheap route.

Ohh and one more thing to mention, most forums and sites will let you click the image to enlarge or view in a seperate window which is typically fine unless your posting images that warp the forum space if the administrators did not code for size limitations so honestly you don't have to pay UNLESS you keep seeing the bandwidth notices which does happen if your posting in every forum under the sun.

Thanks for the link, someone also gave me the heads up about this free (open source) program... do you know if it can make GIF files? Meaning, not SAVE AS GIF but actually take different pics/frames and compress into a GIF File? I was searching last night for a free/opensource GIF animator, could not find any that look reputable... thanks for posting!

I don't know about the GIF animation deal; but, i found a tip using GIMP. It states: When you save an image to work on it again later, try using XCF, GIMP's native file format (use the extension .xcf). This preserves the layers and every aspect of your work-in-progress. Once a project is completed, you can save it as JPEG, PNG, GIF, etc....

Message board will be too large. Photobucket has preset sizes for avatars, thumbnails, website and even larger. I would use the "Website" size. FSM forum software will resize for viewing, but should allow the 'real' size to open up when you click on them.

Re: Posting Images with Photobucket (could this get stickied?)

Bill,

I have noticed that photobucket now has a different layout from your tutorial from a couple of years ago. I am having as really hard time posting images and can really seem to only post links. I'm also on a new comp that runs Windows Vista which is driving me bat-fartingly insane (seriously, who in the hell decided this operating system was better than XP?) I don't mean to impose on you but, if you can work it into your schedule, a new/updated tutorial may be a big help to some folks(me)Big Smile [:D].

Regards,

Jeff

Re: Posting Images with Photobucket (could this get stickied?)

Jeff,

I'll see what I can do about the Photoshop Tutorial update, but I can't help you with Vista! Sorry!!

The layout isn't all that different, you still want to grab the IMG code below the pic and paste that into the forum.

Cheers,

Bill

Re: Posting Images with Photobucket (could this get stickied?)

Thanks for the reply Bill. I think from now on I'll just use my laptop when I want to post pics. I've never had any problems doing it from there. It has good old XP. I use Firefox, and Vista and Firefox don't seem to get along on certain things.

Regards,

Jeff

Re: Posting Images with Photobucket (could this get stickied?)

Vista is trying to break Firefox, it's just one of the reasons I'm resisting moving my computers off XP. In fact I'm trying to buy up a couple of extra licences before they stop selling XP all together.

Re: Posting Images with Photobucket (could this get stickied?)
I have a question. Since i`m in two group builds, i made a slideshow in my photobucket album but i can`t make it pop in my signature. I`ve also tried to put the two badges side by side but that failed too. I`m obviously doing something wrong but i can`t find what exactly. Can anyone please help me?
