It does look good so far. Do what you gotta do in any case, but I like what I see right now. You've done excellent work so far. Looking forward to seeing more.

I’m almost done with the first half of the hull. After I completed the oil canning, I went back and added some Mr. Dissolved Putty. After it was dry I went over that with some denatured alcohol to knock down some of the high areas. I painted the hull with a primer to see how it came out. I need to work a little more on a few areas but all in all I’m pleased with it.
Then on to the second half.

That's an enormous amount of work MC, but it's looking great.

Wayne, can I add another Revell Hunter F6 to the roster please. This one will be in Blue Diamonds Aerobatic Team markings.

Cheers

Tony

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

Here’s an update on the U-boat. I completed the oil canning, torpedo tubes, closing the hull halves and adding PE to the deck. I installed some cardboard tubing inside the hull to simulate the pressure hull. I need to do some filling and priming then on to the conning tower.

Theuns,

You absolutely did not fail here, you’re just not done yet. Take a Dremel with a buffer wheel and buff them smooth or sand them smooth with 2000+. Oil canning takes some time to make it look right.

Hi Wayne,

I had acouple of Airfix Spitfire XIXs that were completed on page 14 and a Pioneer2 Fokker DXXI on page 15. Would you mind updating on the roster please ?

Here's the latest on my next Revell Hunter F6:

Hi Tony,

Great start on the Hunter.

Wayne has been very busy lately. Thank you for highlighting your builds and pages for him. I'm sure he will get on that as soon as he reads your post.

Theuns, I think you will be happier with the results.

OK boys and girls, I sprayed a black primer to bring out any flaws before I moved on. I have to say I am pleased with the oil canning and will be continuing that process on other select builds, just not as much. I will be spraying a mix of Testers enamel rust, mixed with flat black to make a burnt umber color, onto areas where the paint should chip. I will go over these areas with a brushed on AK Interactives Worn Effects. This should make it easy to chip the acrylic paint off later.
Next the conning tower build-up which seems to take up the majority of the instructions.

MC, excellent work on the oil canning. Although I had seen the effect on various photos, I've never seen anyone do it o na model until your build.

I knew Wayne was busy, so I had the thought to make it easy for him and put it all in one post with page references.

Cheers

That is some amazing worl on that submarine. Most impressive effect with the oil canning. I wonder why they call it "oil canning"? Anyway, you did a magnificent job on that boat.

It’s been a little while so here’s an update.
I finished the conning tower with the PE, next is affixing it to the hull and adding some fiddly bits of PE to the hull itself.
The next pics will be the start of the weathering. Oh boy I can't wait!
Now some of you may be asking why black?? Black was the only primer I have at the moment, it shows flaws better and I don’t have to pre-shade. I will be going over areas I plan on chipping with an enamel burnt umber. I will paint over these areas with some AK Interactives Weathering Effects to facilitate chipping.

That looks fantastic! For a minute there, it almost looked like one of those Steampunk flying steamships with that black primer. This is gonna look even more magnificent once you start the preliminary weathering. Looking forward to seeing more.

Wayne please delete my MH 53 from the roster, the results of it so far is extremely poor and I am not going to waist anymore time and effort on it.

Thanx

I am supper sorry to hear the Theuns, it's always a bummer to try to build a kit the fights you all the way. I will do what you did and set them aside. This hobby is suposed to be enjoyable.

I have an update from the weekend.

I mixed Testers enamel rust and Testers enamel flat black to make a burnt umber. I sprayed this onto the upper part of the hull and using a bush. I applied some AK Interactives Worn Effects in specific areas for chipping later.

I sprayed the lower/upper hull and deck with Vallejo acrylics and when dry, use a wet brush to remove areas of chipping.

I have quite a bit to do still and will use oils to enhance the rusted areas after I'm done.

Thanks Taxtp,
I went back over the deck last night and painted wood, applied some Worn Effects, resprayed the grey and “wore” it back off. I think it looks better but I will be adjusting it some with some dry brushing and powders. I also went over the areas below the waterline to remove the rust chips on the dive planes and rudders.
While that is drying I will paint the guns, lights, floatation ring and install the props tonight. I installed my own decals on the conning tower although they don’t show in this picture.

The 10th Flotilla emblem to the front of the tower and U-515s supposed hammer emblem on the upper sides between the upper and lower splash guards. I assume it was painted and not a shield.

I cut the emblems from the grey background.

Great looking work going on.

I've been waylaid by other GB's; now finally to the point where I can pay attention to this one.

Airfix's Spitfire.

Welcome back Check.

Wayne has been quite busy lately with his history class and grandchildren. He pops in now and then.

Glad to see you start on the Spit.

I love the look of the Spit and have a Hase 1/32 in the stash, I just haven't had the urge to start it anytime soon.

I added some more black wash and am ready to apply some pastels. This will be followed by burnt umber oils for running rust and highlighting some chipped paint areas.
Also note the decals

I took the sub into my IPMS meeting on Saturday and noticed that I was missing one of the twin 20mm AA guns. Backtracking to the car I found pieces of it in the parking lot. Oh well, I wasn’t pleased with the way the 20’s were turning out anyway so I will be ordering the CMK type IX weapons set gun set from Hannants in a week or two.
This won’t hinder me form completing the build up to the point of attaching them.
Also, while the oil paint was drying I started the LF antenna aerial. I “barrowed” some wood blocks from one of my overly priced European wooden ship kits like this one….

To make the wood blocks and used some lower E guitar string for the wire. I just started this process so I am making it up as I go along.

You are doing fantastic work on that U-boat!

I have today finally decided to let the MH 53 go. I , for the umteenth time tried to fix the paint but by now allot of the glue seams have failed and bits broke off so I just chucked it in the bin.....my sanity is worth more than the $30 odd it cost me.

Strangely it actually feels rather good not weighing on me anymore LOL

I added some running rust and I’m pleased with it. I think I need just a tad more on the port side of the conning tower. You can see the missing 20’s.
I can’t believe it. I lost the anchor!! Dog gone it!!! My wife and I looked EVERYWHERE. Oh well I still need to order the resin 20’s from Hanants, make a better base, and make the LF aerials so I will have the time to get and anchor from Revell.
In the picture with the bell, all I can think of is Das Boot. The one scene when the plane attacks and one of the crew rings the bell and yells "ALAAAAAAARM"
Well here it is so far.

Hello all,

I haven't posted in a while, but I have been checking in periodically to admire all the work being done.  Our local club had their annual show/contest toward the end of September - so I was busy putting the finishing touches on a few 95% done kits that I wanted to show.  That - and honestly, I was a bit hesitant and had to psych myself up for the painting of the invasion stripes on the Havoc - so I've put it off for a while.

MC,  That is a huge canvas for the oil canning detail that you've applied.  Spectacular work !  It reminded me of the first time I saw a sub in real life.  The USS Croaker is a sub that is docked at the Buffalo, NY Naval museum.  Seeing that made me realize the effect that diving deep can have on the skin of a sub.  The Croaker looks really beaten up.  The photo etch detail and the weathering on your type IX look fabulous.  The question in my mind now is - are you gonna cover most of it up with an equally impressive water surface in a diorama - or will you leave it all exposed ?

Bish,  Really nice engine and pit detail on the Hellcat - and the tri-color scheme is my favorite for naval A/C.  A pretty bird for sure !

Tony,  Nice Hunter !  . . . quite a collection.  And the Fokker with skis is very nice.  A unique looker for sure.

Check,  Always good to see another Spitfire.  Interested to see how you like the kit.

Theuns,  Heartbreaking . . . and the interior detail on the 53 was soo nice !  Wishing you better fortune with the ANT 5.

So finally, I did get back into the Havoc build.  The engine nacelles are filled and mounted, and I'm halfway through the Striping process.  I brushpaint with acrylics - and so I didn't think I could use a standard masking technique for the stripes.  This basically means that I don't know what I'm doing and I'm having to make it up as I go along.  I think the biggest difficulty will be to make the lines look straight when they are really being bent around various compound curves.  I'm pleased with the way the wings came out, but the fuselage band will need some more work.

Thanks, Chris.  It's a nice little Spitfire kit; pretty simple but builds nicely.  Looks like you've got a good start on invasion stripes.  I haven't tried them in a long while, but I remember how tricky they can be.

Very impressive weathering effects on the sub, MC.  Extremely realistic.

Theuns, sometimes it's a relief to scrap a project that just isn't cooperating; been there, too, but sorry it happened.

Sharp-looking plane, Tony; nice lines.

Dangerous looking Hellcat, Bish.  Nice work on the painting.

And a couple more progress photos on the Spitfire.

Fuselage closed up

Closer view of cockpit with masking tape seatbelts

Tried to do a little weathering in the landing gear bays; doesn't show up very well in the photo, but I used pinwashes and some weathering powders (Doc O'Brien's)

Check,

That's a nice looking pit. I like the take seatbelts.

I reworked the LF aerials, isolators and made some turnbuckles. I started the turnbuckles by twisting wire strands around a pin. I looked for some brass tubing that would work for the body but couldn’t find anything small enough. Falling back on my electronics experience I decided to use 1mm OD heat shrink tube. This seems to have worked well. I then used these same wire strands to run through and twist the insulators.

Here is the result for the port stern aerial.

Now on to the remaining aerials. I also ordered the guns from Hanants along with a 1/72 U-boat crew. I don’t know if I will be using them on this build, but I would like to get a type VII at some point and maybe use them there.
