Well, are you interested in a Horton 229 flying wing GB or not?  Please explain your answer...

Not...

I don't really do much in the way of prototype or non-operational or concept Luftwaffe birds, or any "Luftwaffe '46" stuff... Did the Do 335, but that had three important things going for it.. It was a 1/48th Monogram kit, it was under 10.00 (when I bought it in 1978), and there was a Shep Paine diorama tip sheet in the box...

Unless...

There's a kit of it in 1/48th at or under 20.00... Then I might, just for the halibut... Is there such an animal? The 229 kit, not the fish...

Somone has already proposed a Stealth GB and it might be better to do 229's as part of that. And IMHO there are not enough variations of the 229 to justify its own GB.

It appears that Dragon has a 1/48th scale offering of the Ho 229, however it rings up at around 60-70.00 if you can aquire it (the websites I found listing the kit are sold out... Now whether that's because it's OOP or just that big a seller, I don't know)... So I gotta say, "not no, but hell no..."...

It's a jet.. It blows AND sucks..

Isn't Dragon re issuing the 229 under the Orange box (discount) label line?

Dunno...  Would that particular kit-line put the price in line with my generous price-range limits I wonder?

My mistake, it was the Volkksjager kit. Most of the Orangebox kits are more reasonably priced. Their Ju-88 w/groundcrew was under $30 IIRC.

http://www.creativemodels.co.uk/dragon_148_ho229_a1_flying_wing-p-1252.html

Now, is anyone going to do it in 1/32nd scale i wounder.

£30 to £35... That's a ballpark figure of around 70-80 US Dollars, right Bish?

No, i would guess more around 45 to 50 US, its about 1.60 ish to the pound. But then you have to add postage, and that price would include VAT which would be taken off for you, thats 17.5%. It's still probably not cheap by normal US standards, i can usually get kits from sprue brothers for less than i can get them here, thats including postage from the US. But for anyone who is happy to pay it and really wants one, might be an idea.

Ah.. 1.60 US to the Pound... Got it.. Thanks, Pard...

Still puts it way outta my range though.. I'll keep looking though, since the aircraft would still likely have a place in my "Weird German Aircraft in Blown Up Hangars-April '45" dioramas.  I sometimes get lucky and a kit falls into my lap way under retail... (Like that $18.00 Tamiya He 219 I scored, lol..)

Ditto...and just to shatter another myth...the 229 was not really designed from inception to be "invisible" to radar or stealthy; in fact radar was not even developed when the Horton brothers began their experiments w/ flying wings...it just turned out by chance that the 229 was less of a radar signature than a standard a/c...

As far as merging with another GB...that would take the fun outta it...that's what I feel will make this GB more interesting is that the builds will be so similar it will be interesting to see what the participants do w/ the same kits and with the same issues...and how they finish the a/c...

Long live 229..

I know it wasn't built as a Stealth aircrfat, i hadn't realised anyone had suggested it had or that the Germans even knew of the concept. Its just that it does have stealth qualities.

I would love the chance to build mine, but i am upto my neck, i have already had to turn down a couple of GB's i would love to take part in.

Viva la Revolucion! Viva la 229!

Depends on how long the GB goes Manny, as ~gasp~ I don't have one in the stash... yet. I'll keep checking in as it shapes up. Lack of options shouldn't be a big deal, no reason a GB has to have 50+ builders either. I'm involved in the P-38 build that is going on right now, a smaller group but it's easier to keep track of who's doing what.

Manny - diorama with a wrecked 229 and a killer fruit tree - think about it!!

So what dates Manny?

I was thinking Feb 29 (2/29) but being European I'm assuming you'd be going with Sept 9 (22/9)?

On a more seroius note I'd considered doing a 229 built under license by the Japanese. We'll see how it goes...

Try a contest vendor table.  I picked up the Dargaon 1/48th 229 for ~$10 a little over a year ago.  What a steal!

Evilbay shows I can get one for about $32AUD from HK. Still dont have the money though. There could be another option to broaden the kits. Either aforementioned "Stealth Jet" or a Kit(s) worth $229. With the SLT-56 Truck and Leopard 2 combo I'm starting soon (maybe) that would be just about 229 in worth. I just didnt have to sneak it past the wife (isnt this how it started anyways).

Manny,

I would have loved to been in the GB but I already did the kit.

But I think that the pictures of that build above is one of the cooler builds I have seen. I guess I have a soft spot for this A/C for some reason.

Come on guys, this is supposed to be fun...the Revell of Germany 72nd is a  kit that is much easier to find than the Dragon one--and cheaper...

As far as dates, well we could start it Dec 1 and set the tentative ending date as 2-29-2011 in keeping with the 229 theme...of course we could stretch it out a bit if needed...

As I stated earlier, part of the attraction of the build is that it WILL be the same a/c in either the ROG or Dragon incarnation...so we can really compare notes on build issues, etc...and I don't care if we don't have 50 people in the GB.

Fun, fun and more fun...
