Okay, this is for you fans of Babylon 5.

The Mitchell-Hyundyne SA-23E Starfury is always known to carry 4 main guns forward, plus two in the rear. In the beginning of the TV movie Thirdspace, it was also shown carrying 8 missiles. Despite the heavy gun armament, only the two lower guns have ever been depicted in use throughout the series. Why?

Big Smile [:D] You stumped me a bit on this one...

I have a couple of educated guesses. How many can I take? Big Smile [:D]

Couple means two. Go for it. Big Smile [:D]

(Unless, of course, "couple" means you and two babes. Wink [;)])

A second crewman was needed to operate them but the only cockpit modules we saw used ( apparently they had independent systems from what we saw when they ejected, maybe designed for quick switch-out with a 2-man module ) were for 1?

Kugai, you're thinking along the lines of the two-seat SA-25A Badger heavy fighter seen in the episode "A Voice In The Wilderness."

The rear guns on the SA-23E Aurora supposedly were intended for rear coverage, although I doubt most pilots would want an opponent to place themselves into a position where either could take the kill.

Disregarding the rear guns, then, surely someone can explain why only the lower pair of guns were used instead of all four together.

Alright, here's my two (educated) guesses:

A) The fusion batteries on the Starfury were only good for 20 minutes at full power output. Were the guns only fired in pairs to reduce energy usage?

B) The computers used in the making of the shows special effects were relatively low powered, and two plasma blasts per fighter was all the graphics they could handle.

Anywhere close?

Not quite, but since the two of you are trying, I can give you guys a subtle hint:

I'm surprised Boba Fett hasn't ventured forth a guess yet.

I have absolutley no idea, but Ill venture a guess, less weapons, lighter weight load, faster speed?

That, or the heavily armed version was a modified version?

Not a Babalyon-5 guy, but I would assume they did that so it didn't look like an X-wing? Since to prodded me, I took a shot in the dark... Not something bounty hunters like to do! Whistling [:-^]

well, I took the shot in the dark, saying the heavy armed one was a modified one, since he mentioned you boba, and the slave 1 is a HEAVILY MODIFIED firespray patroll ship.

heavily modified doesn't even do Slave 1 justice.

Boba Fett got it. As the Incom T-65 and the Starfury share almost the same X-shape --- even more so the Thunderbolt --- it was decided not to use all four guns.

Hadn't realized I had made that question that difficult. Since everyone here knows at least something about Star Wars, I had presumed someone would have linked the comparison between the X-wing and Starfury's weapons and engine mounts right off the bat.

Over to you, Boba Fett.

well, the issue is, does everyone know what the starfury looks like.  It never struck me to check and look up the image.

Wow, I've never seen that fighter before.  Thats creepy.  Its like a TieFighter, X-Wing, Virago mismatch.  I'd love to see a kit of that or the thunderbolt.

Revell-Monogram made the Starfury kit in 1/72 scale during the heydey of Babylon 5, and I also have the resin kit of the Thunderbolt in 1/72 as well. You can still find the R-M kit floating around some shops and occasionally on eBay.

For those of you wondering what they look like:

Starfury

Thunderbolt

Actually, because you asked the question, I went looking for info on Starfury's on the net, and found one of the Revell kits on e-bay. I wound up winning it for $20 (the box had been opened). I didn't get the right answer, but I got the right outcome. Cool [8D]

I believe it's been announced that Revell plans to reissue the Starfury kit in '09.

That would be cool. Is it the same molds, or did they make improvements like they did for the BSG kits?

No idea I'm afraid - I would imagine it will be a straight reissue.

Just over halfway down the page (no pic - announcement):

Good one Cosmic.  You'll have to show us when you get it.  I hope Boba asks a question soon or we may lose STV to an aneurysm.

WOW! I got it!!!!!! I don't believe it. You did give me a small hint though... Anyway, sorry about not replying sooner. Been really busy. Ok, here it is:

What is the full name of Grand Admrial Thrawn from Star Wars? Not his "core" name, his name in the Chiss language.
