The RAAF certainly did use Vampires.. I grew up next to Amberley Airforce Base, and if anyone can remember the old Gate. Then they would remember the old sign in office.. It used to have an old Vampire up on a stand in the front!.. Many years later, and the new gate, they have a Canberra bomber.!.....

Tweety, Yes, the RAAF did operate Vampires in both the single seat and double seat (trainer) types, I also believe that the Navy also operated them, but Im not a 100% sure of this. As Chris in Japan has said there was one outside Amberley many years ago, in fact quite a few of them ended up on sticks for display around Australia.

I've just raised a new thread in the group build folder for the 2005 group build. I haven't put a completion date as of yet as this is still open to discussion.

Although I have put a proposed start date of 26 Jan 2005 I fully believe this will be the start date from replies already received.

Please consider these dates and let me know what you think, I am also open to any comments on the rules as I fully believe that this is our group build and all who take part have ownership of it. Use the Group build thread to discuss this matter and by all means continue the discussions from the last group build in either the old folder or the new one. I would personally prefer the new folder, but this is up to you.

Hey, did any of you guys catch that show "The Color of War - The ANZACS” on the idiot box the other night? Part one featured WWII and had some amazing images that I had never seen before; there were Beaufighters, Spitfires, and B-24 Liberators. Great reference material!

Oh yeah, 1007 Big Smile [:D]

I'm trying like buggery to remember an ABC show I saw around 6 months ago that gave a pretty good listing of the a/c used by Aus and NZ, kind of a documentary based mainly on awareness.

It will come to me one day.

Yeah mate, there was some great footage on that show. I've never seen the footage of the beaufighters before, or most of the stuff for that matter. I'll have to check out the next bit on the cold war and Vietnam.

And while I'm here...............................1009!!!

Ah, World at War!!!!

That was a fantastic doco.
Remember watching that with my Dad when I was much much younger.
Australians at War, never seen that one, will hunt it down though.

War File and Clash Of Wings rings a bell, but the one I am thinking of was PURELY about Aus and NZ a/c.
It's there, in the clutter I call my mind, just have to push ALOT of crud out of the way first.

Might as well stick with the trendCool [8D]

I am beginning to think the name of this doco is lost forever.
I even asked the knowledge bank on legs, my Dad, he has watched every war doco on tele since, well, pretty much since tele was invented, and recorded those that showed at the same time so he didn't miss anything.(when they invented the VCR that is, he is weird that way, kinda spooky actually.)

Ah well, back to using booksYuck [yuck]

Mate, there was a colour of war the anzacs on TV a few days before the vietnam and cold war one. It was pretty good too. If you missed it, it'll probably come out on DVD eventually, or someone might have taped it and can lend it to you.

A lot of that Beaufighter footage in New Guinea was filmed by Damian Parer, who got an Oscar for a war doco he made.

There are a lot of good plane docos on the History Channel, for those who have Foxtel. They had some fantastic footage a few weeks ago (an episode of 'Planes That Never Flew') which included footage of a 163 taxying & taking off (talk about smoke!), I think it was 'White 6', not sure. Last night - an hour of Sabres in Korea. You can usually pick up a lot of the Discovery Channel specials on cheap DVD (HobbyCo in Sydney stock a range). recent tapings include a great doco on the Lanc & one on the Warthog.

yeah i've picked up some good doco's from those stalls you see in the middle of shopping centre's......There usually about 10 bucks but the downside is there video tapes not dvd's , the last one's i got were U-boats and the SAS........

Here's some recommended veiwing, BBC's The Planets......very interestingThumbs Up [tup]

The Planets, we got that on DVD. Cost an arm and a leg.
The missus is hardcore into astrology, and I don't mind it either, so I didn't argue (maybe she could take a hint when I order model bits!!!)

Discovery channel released DVD's of various planes etc, Phantom, Mustang, that sort of thing.
Got most of them, but nothing REALLY interesting aside from the standard fare of over modelled aircraft.

Those Anzac doco's were on Channel 9. Now if only the Kiwi's would bat for long enough I'm sure Tony Grieg would make us an offer. (Just as well they weren't telecasting the NSW-SA game, heh heh.)
