No pics = no progress...

Will be picture-fying over the weekend for sure. I think I may need to grab some more sheet styrene for the skin of this thing, I'm thinking of using a double layer of the thinnest I can find, so I can wrap it around the leading edge.

...eventhough I dont even own a 229 model I feel the urge....no...the necessity to join this GB...theres is just an all powerful force compelling me to....

I guess it will eventually lead me to get a kit....anybody know what a good price for one may be???

no no no - not calling him out, I just remember what he has planned for his and am getting curious about how it is progressing - innocent question.

As for me..... I did actually sit down for several hours, wasn't happy with the progress and am now changing the plans. I was having a bugger of a time lining up my basswood ribs & gluing at the same time. Then you try to rotate some slightly to get the proper "bend" in the wing. Wasn't pretty. Soooo, I'm taking a mulligan on the first plan. The new plan- I'm printing out a top-view silhouette of the Ho. That silhouette will be transferred to styrene sheet. This sheet will be the "baseline" for the rest of the build. Next I'll take the ribs that I have already cut out & split them in half (top to bottom), then mount them to the styrene sheet in the appropriate spots. This will let me brace them as needed to keep a good 90 degree angle. THEN I can take my super-thin sheet styrene & skin the thing in.

The styrene will also give me a solid spot to mount the cockpit, engine pass-throughs and landing gear bays (still assuming I'll be putting the gear down ).

Can't believe I didn't think of doing it this way first...

Carsanab - I don't know about $$, I'm trying to scratch one!! Sounds like the 1/72 Revell Germany kit can be had fairly cheaply, assuming you can find it. The Dragon 1/48 is the other more expensive option.

Carlos: Squadron and most other shops have the 1/72nd Revell of Germany kit for less than $15.00 American and it's a nicely molded kit. The 1/48th kit from Dragon seems is out of production and seems to be getting harder to find. Follow the thread my radioactive friend for more details.

Vance: Sounds cool, please keep us posted. I still think the idea of building a wooden a/c from wood is one of the coolest ideas on this thread.

Thanks Gamera, now I've just got to pull it off! It was kind of in the back of my mind for years, then the thread for the build popped up, I didn't actually have a kit... one thing led to another... I'll be using as much wood as I can, but will also be raiding the spares box for some pieces leftover from some Me262 and Me163 kits I have built previously.

OK, I'm officially excited again Manny... Silhoetter printed to card stock & cut out, traced to styrene for the lower surface. Getting rid of anything blue.... mmmmmm, love the smell of Sharpies in the evening...

All cleaned up & ready for the next step.

Manny, this one is just for you. I got up for a drink, came back to find my assistant (or is it your spy? ) in my seat, had to pull another one up to the table so she could continue watching my progress.

Main ribs in place. Outboard of this starts getting thin fairly quickly, so I think I'll be building another pair of ribs, then just a basswood spacer to give the right thickness for the outer panels. Center rib has a cutout for the cockpit area, engine pods should snuggle in between center rib & next one out.

Things I've discovered about Crazy Glue...

• basswood to basswood, actually not too good a bond, or it takes forever,
• basswood to plastic, nearly immediate and impressive hold. Using .02 styrene, I was able to glue down the rear of the ribs, let it dry, then flex the plastic so I could glue the front of the rib. Seems to have kept the curve this morning. I will still run some rib-to-rib connectors just to make sure
• Uhhh, when they say "bonds skin instantly", they're bloody well not kidding. Took me a good 5 minutes to peel one of the ribs off of my fingertip, and it took skin off with it.

Good work Vance and good idea on drafting your cat to help you. Sorry about your finger but now that you have made a blood sacrifice to Tamigawa, the modeling god, your 229 cannot help but be a success!

Finished up another a/c last week and this week tossed all the extra stuff into the spare parts drawer and moved to throw out the box. When lo and behold I find the canopy to the 229. Seems after masking it I must have laid the box down on top of it and the masking tape I used on the 229 canopy stuck to the bottom of the box. I peeled it off and cleaned it up and am now moving forward like a Soviet spring offensive!!!

Ahhh Gamera, lord tamigawa already has my blood, including me "checking to see if this is a new Xacto blade" last week - hmmmmm, it stayed stuck in my finger, so I guess it was new! Close call on your canopy, not something you could quickly replace out of the spares I assume.

I'm still trying to get my head around how to provide glass for my project. I still want to try stretching clear plastic over a former, but if that doesn't work I may have to go scrounging for something that I can modify to the right shape. I have an Arado 240 that was destroyed in a moving accident ~sniff~ a few years ago, the forward and rear canopy sections could be reshaped a little and merged somehow:

I was going to try re-building it, but I've since found a replacement kit.

then... they like to fall apart... the wing walk way were a 70's Disaster movie in the making !!! grrrrr.....

Yup, no paintbrushes for her to grab at though, she had to be satisfied with curled up sheets of sanding film. Seems to prefer the 400 grit, nice & crinkly. Sorry to hear about the decals P38, anything useful in your spares?

Looks like my cat Snitch.  He sometimes sits on a shelf overlooking my desk/workbench and monitor s me while I am working on something.

As for Superglue.  Get yourself some CA debonder.  If a finger gets stuck just put a few drops on where they are stuck and it will pretty much come off instantly.  Any brand will work since they are pretty much all the same stuff.  Good looking build so far.  I don't have an HO or I would be in this one.  Keep up the good work.

Oh it's not just superglue Rich, it's CRAZY glue buddy!! I've stuck myself with CA before, in small quantities it wasn't a big deal. Yep, I need to shoot across the road and grab a bottle before the LHS closes the doors for good, otherwise I'd have to get the stuff shipped to me. The amount of CA I actually use, one bottle of de-bonder would probably last me forever.

I'm not so neat.  Shaky hands and CA don't mix very well.  I have about 1/3 of a 1oz. bottle I bought three months ago left, and I just got a 2oz. bottle so I should be set for maybe a year depending on how bad I klutz out on my current projects. lol

BTW If I may be allowed to hawk a product here? I hardly use super glue anymore. I hate the stuff and find this much better for gluing PE parts. Not sure how it would work on wood though.
