January would be fine for me for an FW190 build. I've got a couple of other kits I'm planning to do to finish out the year.

And I do plan to do another 109 -- a BOB E4 this time -- so I'd be up for another GB there, as well.

Cheers,

Stoutfella

Greetings,

Zipping right along on the 109. I primed with Mr. Surfacer 1200, found that it went on a little rougher than I expected and had to sand it a touch. But my airbrush has also been giving me fits, so that might be the culprit. After priming, I sprayed the underside and fuselage sides with Polly Scale RLM 65. I cut paper masks for the fuselage, then sprayed topside with MM acrylic RLM02. More paper masks and lots of fiddly bits of Tamiya tape followed, becoming a bit of a chore:

I sprayed MM acrylic RLM71 to complete the splinter pattern. Once again realized I'd forgotten to take pictures until after I'd moved on to gloss coat and started the Aeromaster decals:

The Aeromaster decals, of course, went on without incident, though I may hit them with Microsol or Solvaset to snug them down a bit more. Holding my breath, I started putting on a few of the Tamiya stencils. I've found Tamiya decals to be utterly dreadful, but the ones I put down so far don't seem as horrible.

All for now.

Cheers,

Stoutfella

Hmmm - September 25 already??? I predict a 1/72 kit, probably one of Airfix's new offerings.

Stoutfella....man that looks good! That Mr. Surfacer must work great at getting the MM paints to stick to it. I can never get MM to stick when I am masking. It almost always lifts. Anyhow great job. She looks beautiful

Wow, after 10 months, this little project is finally DONE. This summer has been a crazy busy time, with getting evacuated for fires (all is well!) and tons of work stuff. But, things have quieted down and I was able to finish up my little vignette. I call it... (wish I had a few better pics!)

The Shakedown:

Sometime in Martuba, Libya May, 1942 a young LT. Rudolph (Rudi) Sinner prepares to board his F4/Trop prior to one of his first victories. The crew preps the plane to be certain all is well for his mission. A quick brief from the commander and off he goes...

I got burnt ou on the Edward 1/32 E-3 because of the poor fit. Decided to take a hiatis from it for a while and made a pair of older kits I had started in the past but never completed. This one is the Fujimi 1/48 K-4, a fun little build that I tried to look like the painting on the rear cover of the Squadron 109 in action part 2.

This one is an old 1-48 E-1 from Hasagaw (sic?). I tried to scratch build an engine for it but it didn't work out so it got set aside. Just finished up per the kit.

Yeah, it seemed to provide a great bite for the acrylic to stick to. I had no lifting problems at all.

Greetings,

Well, this little Emil just zipped right along. Less than two weeks from sprue to completion. So, here he be:

One thing I couldn't bring myself to do was add those 18 tiny number decals along the fuselage panels. I called good enough after wrestling most of the other Tamiya stencils into submission. My airbrush cooperated nicely and my MM acrylic flat coat went on smooth and even.

One terrifying moment: I was looking over the flat coat, just about to touch up a few spots, holding the plane by a piece of plastic tubing I had slipped over the propeller rod on the front. Holding it at chest height above the concrete basement floor, the rod suddenly snapped and Emil dropped straight down, landing bottom side up as I heard the horrible sound of plastic skittering across the floor. I stood paralyzed for a moment, then bent down, bracing for total disaster. Unbelievably, the only damage was a bit of a bend in the trailing edge of the rudder, which had landed in a dusty corner behind the laundry sink. Two of the three canopy pieces popped off, but landed in plain view. I was able to carefully re-bend the rudder and reattach the canopies after unmasking. And all was well. No damage to the finish and all the little fiddly bits I had put on the night before -- cannon, aileron balances, pitot tube -- all stayed intact and attached. So this bird apparently has a charmed life.

Thanks much to tucohoward for sharing his technique on the antenna wire insulators and such. I used the fishing line I have on hand, rather than the EZ Line he recommended, but I followed his trick for making the little cones by softening plastic lids and poking with a toothpick. I didn't execute it as well as tuco, but I'll try again on the next 109.

I'm moving on now to Tamiya's F4F-4 Wildcat for the Grumman Iron Works GB.

Cheers,

Stoutfella

Nice finish & a lucky landing stoutfella. Nothing worse than closing in on the finish line & hearing a crunch, glad she made it out alright. You'll have to do a little research to see if the real thing survived a crash-landing!

Sounds like a pancake landing, or was landing gear already installed...

Great build and equally great photos, nice one! Yes

Mustang: Well, retirement helps, though I've also had some important business on the golf course the past couple of weeks ;-)

And I'll probably start working part-time next month, so I might not be able to sustain this lightning pace.

Good job Stoutfella. The paint job, finish and weathering look terrific.

Here are some progress pics of my Italeri 1/72 109G-6. No one could ever accuse this kit of being a good fit, but it's only little so it still won't take long.

The cockpit is out of box, plus  some Extratech harnesses. Very quick job on the highlighting and shading of it, experience tells me what you can't see inside a closed 1/72 109 cockpit.

Cheers

Tony

Taxtp-Good going so far. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one still building. ha ha.

Well folks here is the updated picture of the work so far. Paint is finished, control surfaces are slowly but surely going on(with a foul up or so along the way but corrected already) and now the landing gear is going on. Here it is so far:
