Just beautiful! Amazing work... When I was a younger guy (17) I worked at Model Products in Mt Clements Mi. At the time they were a division of General Mills (not sure if they still are or not) and they also owned AirFix of England... If I had only thought ahead enough I could have stored a few thousand of these kits and been able to retire by now!(LOL)

Thanks Rigidrider. And the plane is looking good Tuco. You bring up a good topic with Airfix. I wonder how their 1/24 109 kits are. This Trumpeter has been a toughy. In the end I'm going to enjoy the result but I've had a whale of a time getting to where I am now, but then again I added ALOT of AM stuff to this thing. I just hope my decal job looks as good as Tucos does. Man that is a nice birdie!......but then again all 109's are good looking birdies!

The Airfix 109E was state of the art back in the mid 70's, but is far from perfect too. The cowl will not fit the engine bay unless you use a dremel and grind the extra plastic away, leaving a cowl that will be paper thin in places. Details are soft and the rivets are a bit too pronounced and there are sink marks in areas that ruin this surface detail altogether. I have built 3 over my life to this point and do have another that I may try later, but overall you would really want to have a 109E in 1/24 to build this beast. I always did a ton of scratch building to the engine and cockpit as there were very few aftermarket parts for it at the time, this may have changed by now.

Randypandy....whats wrong with that???? It looks good to me.. Handiabled..bring it. Would love to see another one in here. Ive got an updated photo I took a couple of days ago. I was so happy with the mottle outcome I just had to post it. My 8 year old son was so fired up about it that he had to help dad with painting one "dot" on the other side. It's coming out just as good so far.....

His is on the other side but I had him practice on some spare cardboard before I turned him loose. I'll tell you this much.. Painting two colors in the mottle is a B you know what. I have two Badger 200 NH brushes and have to take them down and clean them c.o.n.s.t.a.n.t.l.y. Especially since it is acrylic paint! I showed my wife the job and she complimented me saying that looks awesome. You all know how it is. Most of the time you get a "wow.....thats cool" response. Nope....she was really impressed. I've never attempted this but I will say that it is fun. Thanks for all the comments and I will have a picture of the other side with "his dot" pointed out.

Joe - That is absolutely fantastic. The time and effort you put in to it really paid off. It is a fabulous thing you did do let your son help. You are to be commended on all fronts.

Thanks you guys... I really appreciate the comments. I usually stick to 48th scale jobs ( and will go back after this one) but this has been an enjoying build so far. I found out that I needed eyeglasses with this one so the scale is just right. LOL... I started applying the RLM 75/ RLM83 camo on the wings. What looks good on paper looks weird on the plane lemme tell you. Aero Detail gives options for 82 or 83. Since my 82 was giving me application problems I decided to go with 83. I will probably switch back to 82. Will have to wait until it dries to see which way I'm going to go.

Looks really good, Mustang. I'm sure it's nice to have your son involved. I can see how painting two colors through the mask would be a pain, but it came out very well. I am trying to get all the loose ends tied up on mine.

That looks really technical and very busy in that small amount of surface you have to work with.  I can't recall but was that done with a mask or all individually free hand?

I'm not familiar with this particular aircraft scheme, but usually mottling has soft edges.  Also, maybe too small the individual "spots" which has resulted in just too many of them?  Also when compared to the illustrated profile you had linked, there should be less space around each mottled spot (on average).   Again, just my opinion and I could be wrong - or this is all something you had planned to address further down the line.

regards,

Jack

Hey there Jack.

Thanks for the comments. To provide a little feed back it was done with masks from my 48th scale Bf109. I do know that the mottles have soft edge to them but to be totally honest with you I'm not THAT good yet and if I tried to get each mottle correctly positioned to include a few with the color blend that the scheme has I would 1) drive myself crazy and 2) have sensory overload and never finish the plane. At this point I am as happy as a clam with the plane (outside of the color fudge I just did on the upper wing which should be resolved by next week!). Anyhow hope to be finished with this thing sometime in the next couple of months and until then I'm going to keep enjoying building this thing. Will be seeing around in here bro, Joe

Joe, are those the PE type brass masks that have a number of of mottle schemes on them??  I have that, some where, but have yet to try it out.

I hear ya about trying to get her done in the next couple months.  I've nothing significant to post on my build.  I've run into some paint problems while laying down the underside colour as a primer.  Must be a decades old bottle of paint, but it took four rounds of spraying and sanding till I finely got a decent finish with no blemishes on the surface.

regards,

Jack

Finished the rest of the weathering. I think all I have left is the antenna wire, the center section of the canopy, and the marker lights.

Hey Jack. No they are Eduard masks for the Bf109 F/G that RLM 75/83. Well if I would have read the black stuff on the instructions for the color scheme I am using it says standard RLM 74/75. Well its an easy fix as I have a bottle of 74. I'll change up the pattern from the sheme instructions a little but it will be the right colors. Hope all goes well with the paint on yours.

Tuco..that thing is outstanding. Hope mine turns out that good when I get that far.

Man lemme tell you. the post skipped almost an entire sentence . Where oh where did it go???? Like I was saying. they are Eduard masks for the 1/48 Bf109 F/G that I built in 06.  Then the rest of it was supposed to go that I painted  the upper wing surfaces of the plane I am building now RLM75/83. Then it went on to say read the black stuff..........what happened with my text?????

Looking good Tuco!   How many Bf109's have you built? I saw your stash and was just wondering.
