All I have to do is see pieces of Hvy Equipment being transported on the Highway or Drive by a Mining Operation and I get Nauseated Dead [xx(] !

Guess I'm just nuts then. Seems I need to learn how to relax on my days off all over again! But, it seems at least with styrene in my hands, I'm not far awayWink [;)]

Okay! Start my clock!

With family in town, I have the opportunity to begin right away! (I may be called away for family functions at sometime over the weekend, so I'm starting while I can).

Aaron! Glad you're up and running! Thanks! I shall try not to burden yourself or Frank!

Andrew.....looking forward to seeing that Peashooter take shape! Never watched a WIP of that airplane!Party [party]Propeller [8-]Make a Toast [#toast]

Outstanding Nam!  Now get your Censored [censored] to work! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]  If you need any help posting your pics, just ask. Wink [;)]

OK, lil' progress report before a quick lunch break.  Here's how she looked this morning at 8am when I began to sand the fuse seam.  The little square and disk right on the seam were removed, and I'll add replacements from styrene this afternoon.

As she stands right now:

Dave, it only took me an hour and a half to clean up the engine intake and exhaust!  I smoothed out the seam on the inside of the exhaust tube, and will paint it black after lunch.  There was a pretty heavy lip inside the intake, so I took a dowel and wrapped some sandpaper around it to remove it.  From what I have read, these pulse-jet engines were very finicky about their airflow so I made sure there was nothing inside the intake to disrupt the flow to the engine.  Fuse seam is cleaned up, and panel lines re-scribed.  Need to drill a pilot hole for the pitot tube and generator spinner on the nose, then clean up the wings and tail parts.  The seams on top of the fuselage under the engine and the engine bottom and supports were a real PITA to clean up.  Not much room to get in there and sand them.

Also, the stand that came in the kit has some really deep sinkholes, and are almost impossible to fix.  SO, I am going to take some Plastruct I-beam stock and scraps and make a new one.

Sigh [sigh] Frank - I would not be surprised if you actually build a miniature propulsion device. Next time you post pics would it be possible to include a measuring device so I could get an idea of the size of this jewell ? Smile [:)]

Sean- LOL, if it was a 72 hour GB, I would have! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]  I can certainly post the next pic with a measuring device.  Which would be more helpful, an actual ruler or another familiar 1/48 aircraft sitting next to it?

Nam- Hmmm...never thought of that!  Maybe the next one I build will be the full scale piloted version. Thumbs Up [tup]

Where's Roy?  I saw he was around earlier.  Surprised he never stopped by. Disapprove [V]

Hmmm... just thought of another thing.  How the heck am I gonna mount this thing to a styro block for painting?  I usually use my trusted method of inserting toothpicks into the LG, but thing has no LG. Confused [%-)]

Here's my obligatory pre-madness photo of the kit, still inside the plastic baggies.  Forgot these 1/48 Tamiya kits have die-cast metal hulls (pre-painted), so there's one less piece that needs priming!

Will probably open everything up and get started tonight.  I'll post my "start time" pic; hope everybody else is as excited about this GB as I am.

Ahhhhhh! FINALLY! A Target!Laugh [(-D]

Great to see you other guys getting started! This IS fun!

Now......the downside! Even with careful planning....this is like watching paint dry! Much of it IS!Laugh [(-D]

Decided I shall actually use a pilot fig.......I can paint him while watching other paint dry!

Frank.....You would have to ride that thing like the Green Goblin! Straddling!

Yeah baby!  A Tamiya 1/48 target, very cool!  I have wanted to try one of those, be very interested to hear how yours goes. Thumbs Up [tup]

Nam- LOL, I can see it already! Big Smile [:D]

Having a little trouble with mine, pulse jet doesn't want to run properly.  Thought I had it ironed out, but the reed valves I fabricated out of styrene and lead foil are bending at high RPM.  This may turn into a static only display. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Seriously, Painted the exhaust, looks good with no visible seam.  Also shot a coat of RLM 02 in the intake.  Replaced the pitot tube with a shrt length of hypo tubing, not sure of the guage.  Replaced disc and square on spine.  Just have to fabricate the cradle for the stand and I can start painting.  YAHOO!!!  This is fun. Approve [^]

Sean- Sorry, my only measuring device was too big to fit into my photo box.  So, I set a standard size Xacto knife with #11 blade for a size comparison.  The model is about 7" long, with a wingspan of about 4 1/2".  HTH! Thumbs Up [tup]

Alright guys, it is time!  I'm going to be starting this kit shortly.  Here is a pic of the box art and of the 4 parts sprues. It's the Eduard 1/48 Bf108 Taifun weekend edition.  The only negative thing I have to say about the kit is that they really should have included their canopy mask set.  But at about $12.50 for the kit I really can't complain.  Whistling [:-^]

I'm going to spray the colors in batches, spraying everything that needs to be RLM02 in one job, Aluminum in one job, etc.  That should greatly speed up the painting aspects.  I'll do them pretty much back to back, let everything dry then get the assembling going.  I'd like to get to the point where I can spray at least one part of the base coat by this evening since we're having company over tonight.

3 pm...

RLM 76 mixed and sprayed, left under a heat lamp to dry for a bit.  Started on the cart, used kit parts and fabricated new supports.  The kit supplied stand is quite tall, possibly so that components are easier to work on in the shop.  Some pics I found on the web showed them on shorter transport carts, but detailed photos of one are almost non-existant.  SO, I made my own.

Off to take a nap, this lightning pace is killing me. Zzz [zzz]

3 hours later...

All interior parts are painted. I didn't have Khaki to mix and I ain't going anywhere near downtown today so I just went with straight RLM Grey. Gonna give it a few more hours to cure and then put the Office together after I pick out a few details. Should be buttoning 'er up tomorrow morning.

Jeff

I don't suppose any of you happen to have a color photo of the Bf 108 interior do you?  The instructions indicate that the fuel tanks should be yellow, but I'm thinking the tanks are the interior gray color and the straps securing them are yellow.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

I agree that the straps only would be yellow. I can find no photos of yellow fuel tanks only ones that meet your descripton! I'll keep checking as I m not starting until midnight!Evil [}:)]

Thinking this over, I am going to ATTEMPT to do this group build this weekend, next week (not the one after sunday, the one after that) is finals week, need that weekend to cram, seriously, for once I have to.  So this weekend, gloves are off (besides the gloves needed for my paper and french horn practice)

Morning All !

Commenced the Hunter at 11.00pm local time last night. ( 1200 gmt)

The Martin Baker in this kit is a little gem. Painted the cockpit area with Tamiya NATO black, which dries pretty quickly.

Installed the cockpit and the tailpipe and joined the fuse ........wait to dry.......and did the seams before going to bed.

This morning I've painted the wings ( they are hanging on the washing line drying ) and masked up the fuse and canopy for painting. Also painted the tyres and other small bits including the drop tanks.

Trying to use spray cans as much as possible as they dry  quickly, but I have my wife's hairdryer on standby !

Here's some progress :

Couple more pics - the wings drying on the line, and then unmasked next to the semi masked fuse.

Tamiya US navy Insignia White on the Fuse, USAF Light Gray and Bright Red on the wings.

Drop tanks proving problematic to paint and I will need to let dry, sand again and repaint ( with a lighter coat ) you can guess what's happened.

Well, im off to bed directly, so i hope most of you are going to be finished by the time i get up Big Smile [:D]

Scott, The only thing i can think of about your tanks is, self sealing tanks on Lufty birds were an orangy yellow colour so perhaps that what they mean and perhaps the straps were canvasy seat belt material? But i imagine they were more probably steel straps. As for the rest of the planes interior. RLM 02.

Good luck all.

The Nov issue has an article on that exact model (Taifun 108)! I'll post a picture of those if you'd like?
