That is a great job on those wings Marc. Very smart way to address a trick problem. I can't wait to see how the preshading looks when its done.

I sidelined my D VII for a bit because of the complex fuselage camo and I really needed a break. I plan on practicing a idea I have to obtain the streaked linen on the fuselage this weekend and if it works apply it to the model. Then I can get rolling agian on this adventure. I had no idea how time consuming and tricky these old biplanes were to build but I do love learning from all of the experts here and am glad I joined even if I have hit some snags along te way.

Found this site while playing around on the KC Dawn Patrol site.  www.wbhaviland.org  It's the photo scrapbook of a gentleman who served with the Lafayette Escadrille, then went on to be one of the first Naval Aviators.  Take lots of time and enjoy.

Hi all, sorry ive not posted in a while, but the Battery eater (My camera) was hungry again.

Anyhoo, i have most of the sub-assemblies done, I just need a concerted shove in the right direction and ill be done i think. Im not going to go to heavy on the weathering. So here she is so far. More soon.

Simply stunning Bob, everything about it cries out 'Perfect' From the subtle wethering to the fantastic finish. The engine especially, in my eyes, is detailed and painted perfectly. This is, for sure, a top shelf build. Vunderbar.

Bob- All I can say is MIND BOGGLING!!!  The details, every where I look I see something new.  From the turnbuckles, to the subtle paint chips, to the weathering on the engine- fantastic work! Bow [bow]

Stephen, the rigging looks spot on. Very nice work. Two thumbs up and a bow.

Wing_nut, looking forward to seeing the results of the preshading.

guy, Very cool and unusual. This one looks almost finished.

Bob, Excellent finish. Looks like she's ready to fly. The support gear adds to an already excellent build. Two thumbs up and a bow.

Guy-Can't wait to see that one finished.

Bob-WOW that looks great.  Well done.

Mobious-wait no longer...

I used lead foil to add coaming around the cockpit. It gets glued tot he outside edge 1st then when it is burnished inward iut makes little creases like in a leather one would have.

Struts, numbered to remmeber what goes where, and prop are ready to go.

Wo.  Some might fine work being displayed here.  I really AM part of this GB, even though I haven't been participating at all.  I have been lurking and looking, and I'm really blown away by the builds!

I've started my Dragon Fokker Dr.1, (Frank, might want to update the front page!) and will have some pics up shortly of my progress!  Should be a fairly short and to the point build, though I am going to have to figure a few things out, as I cannibalized a few parts off of this kit to finish my Albatros for the first KOTS (chiefly the PE guns!!)

I'll be building Josef Jacob's 470/17, which is an all black scheme.  Stephen, if you're still around here, did this particular a/c have crosses on the bottoms of the bottom wing?  I've seen a couple of different profiles, and I'm not sure which is correct!

Ok, here are some pics so far.

The engine:

Interior:

Guns:

I rescued this thing off the shelf of doom, as it had been cannibalized for parts for the first KOTS build.  I'm having to scratch all the parts around the guns (which are from the Eduard Albatros kit that I used the PE guns from this Dr 1 on,) which is kinda fun.  It isn't something I've really ever done. I did the ammo chutes this evening.   Paint will be next, and will tell the tale on if I'm good at scratchbuilding or not.

Marc and Guy,

Excellent work gentlemen! Thumbs Up [tup]

Frank,

I have just about given up on the Hansa-Brandenburg W.29.  I am having no luck with finding a replacement decal, and I managed to knock the plane off of a chair (I placed it back in the box while contemplating what to do next with it) and broke all of the exhaust pipes from the engine.  Although I have not thrown in the towel on this one yet, my arm is cocked back and ready.  Once I clear the Tirpitz from my bench, I will get back to this build in earnest.

Thanks Guy, Marc!  Appreciate the kind words.  I'm just now remembering how weird it is modeling WWI subjects.  There are so many things that you have to do differently than when you're modeling other things.  Wow.  I can't tell you the last time that I painted a model, and then put it together, but that's definitely what I'm doing on this one!

Marc, that Camel is coming along nicely, buddy.  How much longer til you're done, do you think?

Marc, that is looking so good, my friend. I love the wood effect. Shes going to look great when shes all done. You should stick around these parts and build a couple more. Looks like you have a talent for these things. LOL.

Scotty, sounds like youve had a bit of a disaster. Stick with it though. Sometimes putting a 'pear' down and coming back to it later, youll have a new lease of life with it.

Marc the Camel is coming along great. I agree building these WWI birds really seem to suit you talents well. I really liked the way you shaded the low areas of the wing.

Justin I know what you mean about how weird these old birds build up. It is my first serious attemp at one and I really can not get use to having to use decals in some of the first steps of constructions like the lozenge pattern on the inside of the cockpit. Also real weird covering the whole wing with decals?! Now I am stuck on duplicating the streaked camo on the fuselage. I have a plan on how I am going to go at it. I just hope I can pull it off. Still I love learning new skills and it should add a little varity to my display case. Besides Frank bribed me with a bunch of Me 109's to join the GBBig Smile [:D]

Frank's bribing people AGAIN?  Frank!!

But yes, it's difficult!  The decals are one of the weirdest things for me, too!  For mine, I'll have to spray the markings before I even assemble the aircraft!  Just seems so...foreign to me!

And it sure is nice to have something different in your display case, for sure!!!

Now back to building!

Nice job!
