Julez72

Thats a bit of a bummerSad i really like that red cowl band....

Hey Julez72        Dont give up yet I found somthing you will like. The plane below according to my resource is an FW-190F-9.  The unit is believed to be II/JG 1 This is a rare and interesting color combo. If I was you I would build it. Good luck Smile

Julez72     I am glad you found that usefull. I think Verlinden makes a underwing stores set for the 190 I noticed the bomb racks under each wing in the picture. I cant wait to see you get started, look forward to seeing your build. Smile

Interesting profile but unfortunately probably not correct.  Many of the color profiles done in the 60's-'80's have been proven incorrect as better means of identifying B&W photos have been used.  That Russian site of color profiles has many, many profiles that make me cringe.

Since that's an F model it's highly unlikely that the aircraft belonged to JG 1, which was a fighter wing not a ground attack unit.  The A model could be fitted with a centerline bomb on the ETC rack but would not have wing mounted bomb racks.  I have a pretty extensive set of references on JG 1 and I've never seen that one identified as aircraft of this unit.

I don't want to come off as pedantic on this because I'm a firm believer that first and foremost modeling should be fun and you should do things the way you want.  I put this out because I've been bitten by bad research myself and being a history buff (who studies Luftwaffe stuff pretty extensively) as well as a modeler I hate seeing something on my shelf that I know isn't right and because I enjoy talking about this stuff.  FWIW..... (not much, I know)

Mike you could be correct I had bought some decals once that gave me red or yellow markings for unit number. The reason was that they could not tell in the photo what color it was. My reference book kind of made it clear that it was probably JG/1. I like many of us I wish pics back then were in color. Either way I like the band at the cowl. Looks sharp.

Bish - thanks for the Academy decals offer, but I managed to find some Aeromaster "Defenders Of The Reich" D-9's on sale at Squadron.

http://www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=an72203&Submit3=Go

I'm liking the bottom set of markings with the spinner and black/white band at the back.

Frank - I'm going to say that this is my official entry for the GB!

The boxing I've got of the D9 is this one:

http://www.capehobby.com/Aircraft_Injection_Models_Hasegawa--FOCKEWULF_FW190D9_JV44_PAPAGEI_STAFFEL.html

I'll be adding the applicable parts of this set:

http://www.greatmodels.com/~smartcart/cgi/display.cgi?item_num=VPI0831

I know it's not for the D9, but I picked it up at a show for 5 bucks, and it looks like a lot of the goodies will be easily adaptable. The dremel is fully charged and ready to roll!

No worries mate. I am likeing the look of Black 10, those defense of the Reich bands really add a nice touch to these late war German aircraft. I have a set of superscale decals which includes Rudels D-9 that i am useing on my Academy kit and the 1/32nd D-9 has the same markings.

I really like that JV 44 kit you have, i must get one of those, thinking of the tamiya one.

Jules, I remember building that Airfix kit when I was about 13.

I remember being really impressed, as I thought it was really detailed!

How times change.

This is how that scheme ought to look though..

I was in the LHS today fondling the new Eduard D-9....

......so tempting......

Alright I got a couple pics, this surely is not my best build. I can do a whole lot better than this 1/48 Otaki FW-190A-8 kit I built last year.

4.jpg Fw-190 picture by Raptor94

Still not nearly as great as others, I still felt like I did better on this 1/48 Tamiya FW-190 D-9 built recently.

028-1.jpg Fw-190 picture by Raptor94

I am now going to attempt Hasegawa's Fw-190A-3. Any thoughts on this kit?

Like a avalanche this group build is gaining strength and momentum quickly!

Great past builds you fellas posted! Inspiration for us to build excellent 'butcher birds' Expecting another delivery from Squadron next week with my Edward FW-190 F-8...Can't wait! The summer months are not productive model building times for me, I will make the most of rainy days to 'get R' done'Cowboy

Now what would it take to make this the most successful GB ever? Other than the low build season I believe we have a contender for the belt!Star

Julez72 -- sorry for the delay, here's that artwork I promised:

Red 19 is an A-8 of 5/JG300, flown by Ernest Schroder in October and November of '44.

This artwork is the centerspread of The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Aircraft #27 (Vol. 3, No. 3), published around 1984.

LOL was just looking at that issue the other day Mike!!!! Great minds think alike eh? Can also be scary sometimes!!Propeller Well the decals for my kit from Academy is no choice in option. The kit itself says A-6/8 on the box, however, the ONLY set of decals provided are for an A-8 of III/JG54 5+I. Sooooooooooo will be looking for AM to see what scheme/decal combos are available. This scheme has enough mottle in it to interest me but want a lil more choice in the matter lol. Might just go with the kit decals and look for swastikas, or get AM that come with swastikas. Looking forward to the builds in the line up!!!!!!!

Hi Richie,

It's even scarier than you think -- I have exactly the same Academy A-8 on my shelves not six feet from this computer! Yep, I was considering some AMs for it as well -- I'll need to get some, all my 190 AMs are for larger scales. I had a count up the other day and have at least twenty 190s in my stash. I measured those plan paintings and they are very close to 1:32nd scale as printed, and that got me really hankering to do that Bodenplatt A-6 (I think it's an A-6) from Hasegawa... I'm leaning toward a variety of stuff, really, in all major scales, but it's going to be dependant on me building a new display case. Unless I can build something decent, it'll be full by the end of the year at the rate I'm building these days.

A full display case is not a bad thing mind you. have a few 1/18 die cast cars that are going to get ousted as the builds go in.Whistling

simpilot34 I also have the same Academy kit in the stash and that on the list to be my next aircraft build, possibly for this GB if i catch up enough on my other stuff. I have a set of Eagle strike decals and am doing mine as an A-6 from JG 1 with a white and black chequred nose.

Mike i have seen that same image in my Encylopedia of German aircraft. It has the slogan Kolle allof of both sides. But on the right hand side it should be his girlfriends name, don't recall it off the top of my head. The Hasa kit gives you two slightly different schemes for this aircraft a couple of weeks apart with the correct correct marking for the right side.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Oh yeah, definitely a sharp looking plane.  I suspect the origins of that red cowl band are due to the old orthochromatic film that the Germans used sometimes which made yellow appear to be red in B&W photos.  For many years people believed Assi Hahn's 109F had  an all red cowl, you still see some old builds of it floating around the internet.  Definitely an eye catcher!

I've got one. I thiiiink this was the third a/c I did in my return to modeling a few years back, behind an Academy F-16A, and the Hasegawa 109 in the background. The decals for that particular 109 were sent to a wet-behind-the-ears new forum member by some fella named "Daywalker", if I remember correctly!

Tamiya A3, built straight out of the box. Already see some things I could improve...Stick out tongue
