Weekend Madness III - COMPLETED see pg1 for pics

Showtime!

After getting the sprues i needed out of their bags, mixing up paint and getting the trusty airbrush out i activated the time and date function of my camera so there's no cheating

And moments later the initial interior color was sprayed. The game is now officially on here in rainy holland. Contrary to most (if not all) instruction sheets the interior color for the mig 15 was NOT that russian blue stuff but grey with a blueish hue, sometimes even black.

Houston.....we have liftoff....at least I'm making some progress....

Here's the kit before I started.  I had used the body as a paint test mule.

Here's the progress thus far.  I removed the side molding....wish I hadn't but once you start....then some Krylon black primer.  Although it is '15 minute dry' I'll wait until later this evening before airbrushing some acrylics.  My goal is to do some weathering with mixtures of NATO black, grey & flat black.....and maybe  a little rust.

Waiting for my red oxide (rust) primer to warm up-I'm going to prime the suspension with that to hopefully get a little more rusty effect.

Wow, it's game day already! Picked up some Army/Marines Gulf Sand for the 1/72 Abrams...going to crack into her later tonight. Hoping to have construction complete before I pass out so I can get some primer and then shoot the base layers of paint tomorrow morning before heading out for a bike ride (perhaps the final one of the season....weather is about to get very 'winterish' up this way!).

Will toss up some pics tomorrow when I can get myself back to the coffee shop. Mia may still try to squeeze a build in - for her it would be Sunday morning to Tuesday morning though...we'll see.

Excited to see what everybody cranks out!

Alright, I'm going to be in this one!

On my bench:

An athern Ready-to-rebuild bulkhead flatcar. I'm going to take it apart, re-build it ( wethering and re-detailing as I go) and I'm going to scratch-build a steel plate load for it.

I have some homework this weekend, but it's almnost none (WHOO HOO!) so I'll just need an hour Sunday evening to do that. My weekend looks very clear.

WIP photos will be here when I'm waiting for the paint/ wethering to dry, so stay tuned.

Had to make a supply run that I hadn't planned on and it ate up a lot of time?

I liked the shape of a mouse so I gutted it and we'll see where it goes? I also sectioned up the helicopter cockpit and then reoriented the side windows. Then I sectioned a tire with a refashioned rim/hub and put it in silcon so I can have six of them later. Not much, but something at least.

It's 9:18am, Saturday 13th November 2010. I am commencing the build.

I have a detailed plan to complete this on time.

1. Start the build.

2. Go as fast as I can.

3. Finish it.

Wow, we're getting deep into the start here everyone.  Bob, Railfan, MrSquid, Kermit, excellent progress guys.

Tony, I like your plan.  Simple and straight forward. 

I'll try to keep up with everyone's progress on the first page but if I slip up let me know so that make corrections.

Cut sprue at 20.00, and by 20.15 had this....

Next up some paint, by now it's 21.00...

So tempting to go for a wash, and apply the decal instrument panel, but that just burns time....

And while I was waiting for that to dry......

Next step will be putting the pit into the forward fuselage, and attaching the fin.

Mr Squid: what can I say... very ambitious, but quite interesting.

And me... Last year it was 40 degrees plus for the weekend build, this year will only be 20 and humid, so I won't have the luxury of instant drying paint this time.

Anyway, it has just gone 9:30 am Saturday morning here in Adelaide, so I shall stop yacking and start building.

Well, I dove in at exactly 1700 EDT and started my Tamiya 1:48 FW-190/A2.  I decided to go straight OOB.

I finished the pit at 1800 and since I will have the canopy closed, I didn't do too much detailing.  Get a load out of the decal straps...very cartoonish.  I will try to subdue them a bit....very comical.

At 1930 I progressed to fastening the wing with fuselage.

I'll let the cement dry a bit and continue.

Looks like this one is rolling right along as usual. Really like what I see so far.

Got started on NIck's kit today. I'll start mine tomorrow morning.

He decided on a different color....This was his first time using an AB. All things considered, it don't look too bad....

We could have easily finished this tonight but I'm trying to teach him a little patience with these things.

The railcar is made out of styrene, and I plan on just going at it head on like I do with a model kit (However, I'll have to make "Step 1" say "Disassemble your kit before you begin")

My punch-in time will be, well, right now, at 8:02 PM Eastern U.S. Seaboard time (Don't worry, at 8:02 PM on  November 14, 2010, I will put the tools down, and take photos of how far I got)

Things are moving along quite nicely... just stopping for another jug of coffee.

Jeff: Good to see the young one building, My lad (5 yo) only has a 20 minute attention span when it comes to building models.

Anyway, I'm now 2 1/4 hours into my build, still cleaning up pieces... I do recall vowing last year not to build something with more than 32 wheels... oh well... the best laid plans of mice and men!!!

Hands are starting to cramp up from holding onto the small pieces... had better start some sub-assembies soon, maybe the glue solvents will help the pain... 8-)

Anyway, the kettle has boiled, this is how many pieces I have cleaned up so far.

It is 2020 (8:20 PM for you civilian types) and vert stabilizers are attached as well as canopies masked.  Drop tank assembled, if I choose to use it.

Started at 6:30 like planned. Found good reference photographs in 'Great Scale Modeling 2009 & 2010' Issues.

Tied into the PE when Connor (girlfriends 9 year old son) decided he wanted to finish his Tamiya Panzer IV tonight... Set him up in the kitchen doing decals on his tank.

Well I thought about Dave's comment that my project was rather lame do to its size. Hmmm...

Old tricks die hard so I took another look at the kit, what could be modified / scratch built to add 'BAM??'

Seems the blob of plastic that is the turret could be hollowed out, shown is the commander's hatch drilled through the bottom as the hatch needed replacing regardless.

Disaster zone! Modeling on my bench & keeping the kid going in the kitchen...

Well Dave I hope scratch built turret interior, gun & breech (turned SS barrel BTW~) with hollowed out fighting compartment (still undecided on level of detail below) Has you convinced my 1/144 scale 38(t) may be small in stature but big on effort!

(did I mention vision ports have been drilled / cut out?) ok...

Needless to say there is only 3 +/- hours put into my project so far. Company dropped in and Connor's Panzer IV is finished to his first model standards.

Tanks for the motivation Dave, this pint size Panzer is going to RAWK!

OK, I've been going for 5 1/4 hours now
slight change of plan, still havn't cracked the glue pot, decided to continue with the cleanup.

So all the parts are now off the sprue (except the tracks, and I will use that as a handle when painting.

This time, I really will start with the sub assemblies

At Sunset here in Cali (around 1645 hrs) the green light went on...

Here is the basic kit

As you can see, a low parts count and an older simple kit...

Step 1, build the road, idler and sprocket wheels

Step 2, build and attach the return rollers and rearhull details

Step 3, attach road wheels and add lower front hull details

Step 4 attach hull hatch and rear plate

All this was completed before dinner...

After dinner it was step 5, add upper hull details

Step 6 hit a snag, the turret hatch arm broke, so I just glued it shut...

Step 7 was build the gun tube, mantlet and turret halves 

Afterwards I added some stippling with liquid cement to improve the cast armor texture.

Step 8 was to add the turret top and turret rear machine gun

Step 10 was to add it all together...basicly it is 95%built. I just need to add tracks, tow shackles and cables,and whatever other detail things I feel like adding... fastest  build of a tank in years...

Suppression do you have super vision or something, I find it hard enough with my optivisor doing PE on 1/350, but to detail a 1/144 vehicle, insane, luck mate

Well 29 hours into mine and I've just finished the second putty session with at least one more to go. Depending on how that goes is the paint scheme I do on this bird

As for the egg plane, I'm about to break sprue

OK Cockpit on this little egg beastie is mostley done. I couldnt leave it at a seat and decal IP. I rescued some of the cockpit from a recently trashed 109, looking good. Photos when finished on the pit
