Looking good gang - I'm grabbing some free wifi access while waiting to pick up my daughter, I'll have to go back & catch the pages I've skipped over, see what I've missed.

Needbeer - I don't usually go for "pointy silver things", but those red+white stripes look awesome on that bird.

Dupes, I see you are being monitored as well, making sure you don't extend past the weekend - I've got one checking up on me as well...

The box & decals - a quick test from the RAF sheet & I think I'll be able to used the OOB decals for the Swiss machine.

The plastic is black. And very hard, it's almost like working with black ABS plumbing pipe. Takes FOREVER to sand down, and as I found out later, takes forever for Tamiya cement to settle down. I woke up this morning to find one of the drop-tank pylons had dropped enough you could see through the gap it left behind! I assume this type of plastic was chosen for two reasons: no painting needed for the kiddies that wanted it to look like the 111 Squadron birds on the front; Hard as nails so said kiddies could chase their sister around the house without fear of breaking the plane!

(Somebody asked me "how old" - my boxing is only one year younger than I am!

Wing halves together...

Yep, this is the sidewall detail! Big Smile

The ejection seat, I'll set that aside for some other project...

Fuselage halves together...

Well the good news - the ailerons are actually separate pieces, so I'll deflect them a little. Bad news, uhh, one is obviously thicker that the other! And a slight gap at the wing/fuselage joint, and several dimples on the fuselage where the locating pins are.

Oh yeah, the underside. Remember how I said I'd be going gear-up on this? Well, I forgot! Bang Head Should have blanked off those areas before closing up the wings etc. Sooooooo I put the wheels to work, giving me something for those little black slabs to rest on as the glue set up! I added some sprue scraps to the nose from the cockpit opening.

Putty? What putty?!....

OK, there is a fair amount of putty! As tempting as it was to hang 8 stacks of rockets on this thing, I couldn't find a pic of a Swiss Hunter with rocket rails, so that accounts for the putty dots on the outer wings.

Krylon flat white primer - not sure I'm convinced it'll be my new primer, it lays on really thick. No harm on this kit.

The official time judge checking in on my progress...

I actually have the underside light gray on as of an hour ago. Using Tamiya acrylics (over the Krylon - crossing my fingers!) so I should have no problems adding the topside gray & green this afternoon/evening.

Need beer - nice plane, but you made a huge mistake. What you meant to say was Aussies beat South Africa. Wink

Owl - your brushing skills are amazing well done, waiting for more…

Everyone else - keep the great work up!! I'll be following your tactics most likely for when my turn comes.

Needbeer, nice job on the Hun!

Andrew, great job on the Big Tailed Beast.  Hope mine turns out as good.

Owl, nice job as usual.

Kugai, looking forward to more.

With approximately nine hours to go, the color coat is on.  Got to tell you, it was real fun shooting light ghost gray over the Tamiya gray primer.  LGG is about a shade and a half off of Tamiya gray, making it difficult to tell where one ended and the other began.  Pic of the pretty gray lawn dart.

What is it with cats when we're building?  One of ours usually hangs out during these things, but she's been in a bad mood and elsewhere in the house this time around.

Hi Guys:

Well, i started at 11 PM  last night (Saturday) and made some great progress ...

Here are WIP photos taken earlier this morning  (Sunday)... I've now assembled everything and have sprayed the gloss color coat on the airframe and the 4 little fiddly parts ... as all of that is in the process of drying and I have to go grocery shopping for my wife, pictures of that will have to wait ... I do believe I'm going to finish well within the time limit and have certainly enjoyed seeing the work that everyone here has done/is doing ...

Starting on the detail colors...

IMG_0221.jpg

Though it doesn't show up well here, there's a second shade of gray on there and not just the red.  The base color is the aforementioned Camo Gray and I used Lichtgrau for the slightly different gray depicted on the flaps, verticals, etc. in the anime.  After this has a chance to dry, I'll be adding the same with a smaller brush to the insignia and start adding cockpit colors and the black stripes.

Next will be pics of the battloid subassemblies.

Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time...the AMT/Round 2 kit, that is.  After getting the body painted and the chrome removed, I started on the chassis.  All was going well (as well as can be expected with a very old kit), I discovered the rear axle was missing...Bang Head..or I can't find it.  Either way, not good.  On that note, I'm throwing in the towel and just going to sit back and enjoy everyone's builds.  All is not lost....this kit has a decent Lincoln hot rod motor and a couple of nice bodies.  Might even attempt to build the stock 1925 T one of these days....just not today.

Cheers

Bob

Holy crap Stickman, where did you find those?!  You've managed to find four of the highly rumored but never documented Vietnam era Mk.I Mod.1 space saver spares!  The armor modeling world will never be the same!

Wow, I both admire and envy you guys. One, I can't recall the last time I had 48 hours, uninterrupted more or less, to model, and two, my AMS is so strong, I spend an hour or more doing two lifting loops on a hull thses days.......

Ok, my tires are now mounted, recoilless rifle painted, decals on, and most detail items painted.

I still need to finish painting and install the ammo tubes and exposed rounds and glue on the headlights and install the radiator, after I get a flat coat applied tomorrow morning...

Owl, nice work as usual.  You really need to talk Santa into bringing you an airbrush and compressor.  As much as I resisted it, it really makes life easier.  Now I just got to get a compressor that won't annoy the neighbors as these cans are getting expensive.

Bob, bummer about the axle.  I was looking forward to watching your build.

Stik, nice work on the Jeep.

Randy, looking forward to the pics.

Don't have pics yet, but the lawn dart is decalled.  Just waiting for the clear coat to dry then I can start on the landing gear and wheels.  Tried a few new things this build.  Played with the Eduard self adhesive PE, decided that I could live withouth it.  Tried using Testor's Metallizer sealer as a clear coat over the decals, works pretty good.  Found out that you can use a microwave on models.  Zap it for 5-10 seconds at a time and it will speed up the drying process of decals or tacky paint considerably.  Probably won't make the 2300 cutoff, but it won't languish like last year's builds.

As promised my finished pictures of Testers Ryan PT-20 Trainer. Its a pretty cool kit as Testers kits go IMHO.

Anyway as I told you a while back, yeah I know its cliche and all but lost some time making the exhaust stacks after the dog got them yesterday. But wait it gets better Indifferent BTW anyone want a DOG ??? Well she struck again last night Surprise I had dipped the windscreens in future and left them on the counter to dry over night. Got up this morning and found bottle of future in the living room, tweezers out back and the paper towel with only one windscreen under the kitchen table. I figure she ate the second one Angry SO today lost a couple hours making exhaust and attempting to make another windscreen. That attempt didnt work out too well so I am submitting my one screened build. Embarrassed OH and yeah the dog is still living, although I am not sure just why.

This is my first Weekend Madness build and yes it was fun and frustrating and rushed and stuff. I think I will do it again next year, however I will send the dog to a doggie sitter.

Man, some hot builds! Mia asks me every year why I don't just build all of my kits in 48 hours or less...Surprise

The Raider is done - although looking at these pics under the bright lights, I'm seeing that it could use a bit more weathering. Will dirty her up a bit after I get back from vacation. For now though, she's plenty shelf worthy! Looks good next to the Viper. Yes

Can we do another one of these before next November? Dave? Eats

Dupes, my wife and youngest daughter love this guy...

Stik - me too! My best buddy in the world right there. Now if I could only get him to keep his fur off of my freshly-sprayed paint...

I'm quite sure I have some other pics of him "participating" in my builds somewhere. Heh.

Ernest - Patton-related note - just picked up the Legend Magach 3 conversion today (lf1134), although for the Tamiya version...luckily I won't have to deal with 2 hull halves!

Dupes, great looking Raider.

Well, once again the deadline has passed and the model sits incomplete.  However, on the bright side, I got farther this year than last year so some progress was made.  I'm thinking a can of clear flat is in my future as she's a little too shiny.  Without further ado, here's some pics as she is now.

I'm going to primer the main wheels and then hit the sack.

Wow, there's some amazing work going on here!!  I'll post some comments when I'm finally done!!

Getting close to the wire here with only 9 more hours to go!  I probably got carried away with some things like adding cast texture to the hull and turrent, and a few areas took waaay longer that anticipated (turret basket, 90mm gun joint, cleaning up all those wheels!!!)

With a coat of Lifecolor UA220 Olive Drab.  It seems light, but weathering will darken it quite a bit)

Mantlet and gun came out better than I anticipated, though it took a while

Hull and turret just seemed too smooth, so I took the liberty of adding a cast texture using Tenax liquid glue and stiff nylon brush.

Working on wheels and tracks now.  I'll apply a gloss coat before I go to bed and decals in the morning!

Buffhead, I've been wondering how to get the rough texture like you have on the turret.  Did the kit come like that or is it something you added?

As for my update, here's some of the progress I've made with the detailing:

IMG_0223.jpg

IMG_0223.jpg

Obviously, there's a bit of touch up and cleaning up lines to be done, but it's getting there.  Unfortunately, with only about 7 hours left and the issues caused between paint problems ( especially not being able to mask when the paint hasn't fully cured ) and not deepening the panel lines before painting, this isn't going to turn out as well as I'd like.

Oh, well.  I just try to keep in mind the line I saw someone using on there signature last year, "Done is better than perfect", applies in these situations and be happy that I have more than a couple spares of this kit.

Kugai - Cast texture is pretty easy to add.  There are a couple of methods out there:  one is to stipple a liquid putty like Mr. Surfacer 500 over the area until the texture is achieved; the other is to brush on some liquid cement like Tamiya Extra Thin or Tenax 7R (I use both) let the cement soften the plastic for a few seconds and then stipple a brush with short, stiff bristles over the area.  For the Patton I used mostly Tenax and a brush right on the plastic, but in some areas that were covered with putty I used the liquid putty method!

Guys I had to post this.  I knew weathering would have to be quick with this build so I decided to give this stuff a try.  Its Flory Models Weathering Wash.

Never tried it before.  Had two bottles, one Black, the other Dark Dirt.  Its pretty easy to use.  Just brush or airbrush all over the model, let dry and then wipe off using a damp cloth or paper towel.  I used Black for the engine grills on top and for the rear hull, Dark Dirt for the rest.  Because its water based using chalk for pigments it can be used with any paint type.  I took a while to figure out how to wipe it off, but results came pretty fast!!

What do you think?

Gahhgghhhfh! Darn in-laws dropped in after supper last night for am un-planned "family party" for my wife's birthday. Considering the kitchen table is my workspace (or the other way around??!) I was derailed. In my wife's honour, I'm declaring this a long weekend & finishing up tonight! Whistling

Here's the Hunter with the topside gray on. In person it looks far too blue to me, but photographs well for some reason! Canopy & droptanks will be attached & green sprayed on tonight, some burnt metal applied to the tailpipe area, a little weathering...

This is definitely one of those kits that would have been easier to deal with by leaving the tailfeathers off until after painting was done. Gotta learn something right!?
