Dave - those look great! Love the little La-5.

Ernest - can you figure out any reason why they would have molded the hull in two halves?

Lewbud - is that 1/48 scale? Wow!

Needs beer - can't believe you banged out a NMF that fast...nice. Yes

Editing my pics right now...posting them up in a few. Where's everyone else? Usually by this point there's about 25 pages of WIP shots?

OOOOOOOK. Started yesterday at 6:00 P.M. sharp right after dinner. Not a lot of parts in this one, but the two big ones (top and bottom hull) don't particularly want to go together. That's the drawback of having two huge parts!

First, the obligatory box contents:

And what happens every time I open up a new box of plastic:

Entire first evening dedicated to assembly...as usual with a 48 hour GB, I feel that if you aren't firing some primer or a base coat by the end of the first night, you're in trouble! Filled all of the seams as well as I could. With more time, there are a couple more ejector marks and fit issues I would have addressed. Pics:

Last thing before bed was the first coat of 99 cent Walmart spray can black primer. It's cheap, it's easy, lets me pre-shade the entire build, along with letting me get out of some of the more troublesome decals (coming up).

Instead of doing 6-inch long curved striping, I decided to mask it all off. Different widths of Tamiya tape and pinstriping tape let me do this:

In prep for a loooooong spray session covering up all of that black (really the only drawback to a black primer coat):

While I was spraying that, I put some gloss black on the canopy, guns (in prep for metallics), and the stand. I wish every kit came with a stand! I may have to see if Revell will sell me some more...after peeling off the masks and slapping on the non-gray parts, that puts us here:

After this, I sprayed two small circles of future for the decals that I wasn't able to make masks for - two hexagons-in-hexagons that I might have tried to pull off with more time...but not today! Hopefully that will be dry enough shortly for me to apply them followed by a flat coat. Some detail painting to do after than, then it's on to weathering!

Hopefully I can do this again tomorrow night after completion - if not, Monday morning it is.

Good luck everyone on finishing! Big Smile

Dave, you get those things finished yet?

Dupes, the Raider is looking good.  In answer to your question nope, it's 1/72.  To add some difficulty, I'm playing around with the Eduard Zoom Pe set for it.  Some pieces, such as the instrument panels, have adhesive on the back so you don't have to use superglue on them.  In 1/72, I don't know if the effort is worth it, but I'm giving it a shot.  Each IP will be about 9 pieces each when they're done, and the seats will have about 15 pieces each.

Centhot, you're probably already through masking, but I cut thin strips of tape to go inside the framing and then fill in the void with more tape or masking solution.  Your Wildkitty is looking good.

Owl, looking forward to more.  Keep it up.

Need Beer, keep it up.  Looking good.

Andrew, I have that kit in my stash.  All I need is the Eduard PE dive brakes and I'm good to go.  Looking forward to seeing yours done.

Bob, I know you'll do that old kit justice.

If I missed anyone, keep up the good work. I had to step away and let my eyes refocus after building those IP's.  Will post pics when I have something pic worthy.

Dupes, my wife and youngest daughter love this guy...

Bufflehead, I wana see that Patton done! Seems like there are several of that classic popping up on here lately....

Owl, you are a brave soul incorporating resin an a 48 hour build... Toast

Well I kicked off my build around 1130 hours PST here. Last night was out of the question due to IPMS Chapter meeting where I consumed far too much coffee and as a result of which I did not wind up falling asleep until sometime between 0445-0500 this morning. That is some potent coffee...Indifferent

so first up are the box and sprue shots...

then assembly began with the engine... a very nice little assembly just needing some wirig and plumbing to make it really shine...but since there are only 48 hours here...

Then installation of the engine

afterwards began construction of the lower body, suspenstion, drivetrain, exhaust. All I modified was the exhaust by drilling out the end...

More progress pics after I eat...Smile Burger

Stik, looking good.  Gotta love a MUTT with a big gun.

Here's a pic of the Eduard IP.  All that's left of the kit IP is the center section.

Now the kit piece.  I've added one piece of PE to the center section.

This self adhesive PE as Eduard calls it, is kind of a pain in the keester.  Some parts that should have it, don't, and those that don't need it have it.  As I said earlier, I don't know if it's worth the effort because they will be hidden underneath the IP coaming.  Also some parts that should be painted, aren't.   Don't know what's up with that.  Will post pics of the seats whenever they get done.  I'm going to follow Stik's lead and have dinner.

Major body, suspension & engine components have been primed.  Chrome parts are spending the night in a bath of Mean Green (generic Simple Green?).  Now the next decision is what color for the body-silver, metallic red or white?  I'm open for suggestions....

This is a very old kit-after looking at the instructions in detail (probably should have done that earlier) I noticed that there are no radiator hoses shown for the street version...interesting.  Makes the drag version a better choice...

I hope to get the body painted in the am before heading off to church and the chassis & engine after church....we'll see though..

WOW is all I can say geeze !!!! The builds here are fantastically amazing, each of them. Bow Down

Razordws you have convinced me already, now I have to have one of those La 5's man !!

Kermit yup tis me attempting to fast build a slow build build Stick out tongue And very worried about the deadline too. Sorry you couldnt get yours started but I will be watching next weekend too. Course I might not get mine finished till then LOL.

OK, well, ummm, here are my WIP pictures, the first one is at the 12 hour mark, and the second is at the 24 hour mark.

Seams werent too bad but there were some mismatches on the nose and main gear that took some time. The gear is all fixed but I still have some work to do on the nose, and I have to scratch some exhaust stacks for it. If you can believe this the Censored dog ran off with the sprue the stacks were on.

Back to work I go

Can't wait to see the finished-build roundup for this one!

Mostly done for the night...and mostly done with the build, too. Want to spray some light coats of Tamiya Smoke, maybe add a tad of battle damage, but other than that, this thing is ready for the shelf.

Pics tomorrow! Alien

Cool! Color applied!!!Stick out tongue Love those old Hawk kits.

Picking up where I left off... I began installing the upper components

At this point after roughly 5+ hours of non stop building, taking breaks at the endof each step to photgraph the progress I was here. Done with the jeep except for the glass and tires and ready for painting. I then began to build the gun. (For thoe who do not know- a gun is a crew served weapon)

After raching this point I decided to take a breather for three reasons:

1) I could not sand the seam on the RR barrel until it dried...

2) after a gorgeous sunny day with warm sushine on my in my work area, the marine layer began to come in, the temperature  cooled noticibly, and I lost my excellent light source behind the clouds...

and 3) I was hungry, so it was time for dinner and to give the parts time for the glue to dry..

After dinner I resumed my build. I sanded smooth the seam on the barrel of the 106, added the breech and handle, sighting rifle, sight, and completed building the Traverse & Elevation  (T&E) unit. Afterwards I built the tripod and set it aside to dry. Although I was a TOW gunner myself, I have a soft spot in my heart for the 106, the weapon that preceeded the TOW as the Infantry's Tank Killer and bunker buster. After all, there is no beehive TOW round...Devil I got to fondle the 106 but never fired one during the course of my career...Sad

so here is my 1/35 M40 106mm Recoilless Rifle

and placed (not yet glued) in the Jeep (The US Army does not use MUTTs... the M151 was called a 1/4 ton or a Jeep by the troops... never a MUTT... it's like calling a 113  a Gavin... no such animal in the Motor Pool)

That is the build up to this point after 7 hours of work with a 40 minute or so break to eat and upload photos.

I had considered making this a "two fer" build doing a second M151A1 standard jeep.

But not wanting to push the building to the point of being no fun I decided against it for now. I may start the second jeep tomorrow just for fun, but not as part of the 48 hours get it done here.

Some fascinating work guys.  Sorry I don't have time to go through and comment on everything but I am enjoying the show as always.

Red Baron, I'll add you to the front page.

I've managed to find some time to finish up my two builds.  I'm catching a plane tomorrow am and after ignoring everything and everyone for two days while I did my builds I had a lot of errands to run today.  I'll be gone for three weeks but I hope to be able to put everyone's builds on the front page at some point.  If not we'll figure something out.

I didn't get a chance to do any weathering on my builds.  Just didn't have the time.

Centhot

Good luck with the Patton!  US or foreign colors?  Israeli colors mean removing the commanders cupola though.

Not if it's built as during the June 1967 "Six Day War". They still had the American Cupola and the 90mm gun at that time.

Taking a break from sanding and restoring panel lines to post a few pics.

Here are the parts with the interior painted black like I mentioned earlier...

IMG_0216.jpg

And the major sub-assemblies with putty...

IMG_0216.jpg

The parts for the outside aft fuselage are just test-fitted to confirm how much of the seam I'll need to sand, so the gaps there will be gone next time you see this.  Also, I didn't include the single parts ( hands, nozzles on the boosters ) that will be added in final assembly in this one.

dupes

Ernest - can you figure out any reason why they would have molded the hull in two halves?

Hey dupes! The only reason I can think of is the molds date back to 1966!!  The turret bottom actually has the date on it...I had to sand it off!  I new the kit was an oldy, but that's almost as old as I am!!  I guess slide mold technology wasn't around back then!  BTW, the Cylon Raider is looking SWEEEEEEEET!!!

stikpusher - I'm working on getting it done sir!!  Expect completed pics on Monday!

After 15 long hours of hard work (well maybe a bit less than 15 hrs.....OK, a LOT less! Stick out tongue) :

The split hull was a bear to deal with.  Parts fit was terrible causing hours of filling and sanding, but there were quite a bit of sink marks to deal with as well.  Fortunately the upper hull is practically complete.  The downside to that is all the details (tools, tow cable, etc) are molded on!

While putty was drying I took the time to work on the turret, which had much better fit.  Still work on it required lots of trimming, sanding and adjusting parts fit.  The biggest problem was the 90mm gun....although it is molded in one piece, the molding was pretty bad and I spent the better part of a couple of hours carefully cleaning it up.  I was VERY tempted to scratchbuild a replacement, but decided to keep it OOB as much as possible.

The mantlet was OK, but I ruined the MG port (at least that's what I THINK it is) and had to replace it with some brass tubing.  The kit has decent "D" rings for the turret and hull, but only molded on "lumps" for the mantlet.  It was an easy task to cut them off and replace with .30 sytrene rod shaped to fit.  The joint between the gun and the mantlet is also pretty bad...more puttying and sanding tomorrow morning!!

All in all, I''m about where I expected to be at this time.  Tomorrow I'll finish assembly and it will hit the paint booth....I hope I have some Tamiya OD left  Confused

Stik, nice work sir, keep it up.  You might want to park it in a better neighborhood though, at least they left you your rims!

Randy, the Ryan is looking good.  Hope the pooch didn't eat the stacks.

Kugai, cool build.  I still have an original box Regult pod in the stash (been carrying that one around for too long, maybe it's time I built it.)

Buffle, that old Patton is cool.  Too bad the Monogram Mafia build is finito.

It's 0230 CST and I'm calling it a night.  At least it looks like a lawn dart now.

Thanx LewWink Your Rafale is looking pretty sharp thereWink Tigermeet markings I think you said? Looking forward to those!Stick out tongue

Buffle, you have made great progress on your Patton! IIRC, if the canvas mantlet cover is in place, the lifting lugs on the mantlet should be covered as the kit was molded. But... I am certainly no expert and my best book on that is buried right now... I will try to park the jeep away from the homeboy shopping club tomorrow once I get the paint on...Whistling I think for the next Monogram GB I may have to do one of those Pattons. It's like the Centurion and T-55 in its' looks, a solid no nonsense Cold Warrior. Last time that I built that kit I was under 21...Whistling

DONE! (47hours 20min)

Here she was last night before painting

Had a choice of tamiya acrylic or mr hobby for colour. Chose the tamiya, bad move as I have been having trouble with it of late when not using primer and still had it. So this morning stripped the tamiya and on went the mr hobby lacquer.

End result below. Skipped the bombs and only did the main decals as ran out time (my turn to cook tea then missus computer had a melt down)

Okay, now I'm in trouble.

One of the reasons I chose the paint scheme I had in mind was because I knew I had the FS Camouflage Gray for the base color in spray, which would leave only the details to worry about brush-painting.  I just found out the can is nearly empty, and there's no hobby shop that'll be open today.

Now I've got to figure whether I want to brush paint the Camo Gray and try to even it out with the little spray I have left, or quickly decide on another color.

Razor - Love your builds.

Kugai - MORE MORE MORE

Lewbud - Looking good so far

Owl - Nice, very nice

Dupes - Love the weathered look you have on the cat model, 1-1 scale? The Cyclon Raider look tops as well.

Stik - Looking forward to the finished product

Kugai - MORE MORE MORE

Okay, I have a solution that will make the use of the Camo Gray I have without running out for the project...

Since it'll take less spray to paint the fighter, I'll do that in the 2-tone gray scheme I'd originally planned.  The Battloid ( the humanoid robot form, for you non-Macross fans out there ) will be done in one mostly-white scheme used for most of the VF-11s in the Macross 7 series that appears on the box art, since I have plenty of white spray paint.

To eventually have one of each with the matching schemes, I'll just use one of the spare kits to make the match for each of this pair some other time.

I'll have the pics up once the base coats are dry, Koenigwolf.

Thanks for the info Stik!  Wow Razor, two excellent builds, and in 48 hours too, good stuff!  Dupes, looking good dude!

I've not had a chance to work on mine.  Still have to finish the masking, etc. and it's time to call a halt, so, going to be late over the finish line.

Great work so far everyone. I have too busy to do anything this weekend. The Boss has been doing things with my sister in law so I have been playing single dad pretty much every day. I'm going to do mine next weekend when Bill does his.

I have also changed my mind and will be building the 1/48 Hasegawa A6M3 Type 22. It's a kit I grabbed off a vendor table way back when for like 5 bucks so I really don't care how it turns out.

Keep at it fellas. Y'all are doing a bang up job!

Regards,

Jeff

Great job, NeedBeer!  Maybe I'll try to get something up to that standard in the 48 hours next year.

Okay, as promised, here's a pic of the main sub-assemblies after the base color has been added:

IMG_0218.jpg

The parts on the block in front are going to get another shot of white spray paint.  There were a few spots on some parts that didn't get enough coverage in the first coat, and when I rescribed the lines on a shoulder the magic tape pulled off the white ( I forgot to rescribe before painting ).  The good news on that last bit is that there's no other color going on that part and I half expected the peel-off from previous experience trying to add panel effects to another model that I used Tamiya spray on, so I was able to factor the possibility into planning with the time left.

More coming up as I get some detailing on when this paint dries.
