I'm barely gonna make it.

Here's a last few WIP pics of the sludged up bits waiting for cleanup, final assembly, and the last shot of dullcoat:

IMG_0225.jpg

Unfortunately, the sludge wash won't be as effective as I'd like because of the lack of rescribed lines, but I'll at least be able to get a few of the lines highlighted and trim evened out.

Final results coming up after the dullcoat dries!

Got done with about 10 minutes to spare.  Here's the final result:

IMG_0228.jpg

As with last year, the build was fun, even if the results weren't the best ( though probably the best for any 48-hour effort that I've ever done ).  As often happens, I also learned a few things.

1) scribe the lines in these kits to get them to stand out better, especially if you're planning on lainting the stripes and insignia.

2) You know that "using Silly Putty for a mask" thing?  I forgot to get the stuff out of the gear bays and even though it didn't completely ruin the model, I found out you should remove the stuff before spraying on the laquer.

Thanks for the tips on that texturing and it looks like everyone's doing a great job!

Looking forward to it again next year, and will be posting my son's effort next weekend.

AHHHH......crud!  Didn't make it fellas.   I was up til 4 AM last night trying to get as much done before the deadline.  Everything was going well until I started applying the decals.  First I glossed the areas with some Future.  I didn't like the selection that came with the kit so I decided to use some old Italeri and Tamiya decals.  No problems with the Tamiya decals, but the Italeri shattered when I tried to apply them.  I had to dig and dig, but I fianally found another Italeri set that worked.  Black Eye  After that dilemna, I sprayed the white stars through an Eduard mask and then tried to hit the decal areas with some PollyScale Flat, which is (or was) favorite flat coat.  The rear was fine, but when I hit the front I noticed a strange violet/blue tinge to the wet flat coat!!Surprise  I quickly sprayed clear water over the area and tried to brush off the wet flat coat, but it was too late....disaster had struck. Crying  I decided to hit the sack and see what I could do in the morning, and this is what I woke up to:

*SIGH*  I'll keep working on it today....maybe I can fix the flat coat mess with another gloss coat?  In any event that bottle of PollyScale Flat is now in the trash bin!!!  I should have usde MM Flat Lacquer instead!!

Hangin' in there, guys ... still have a bit more than 10 hours to go but worried not be done ... paint still not dried and raining here now, so humidity is sky high (no pun intended) and temps have dropped way down from the past few days ...

I'll check in later today ...

OOPs forgot to say what great work was done over the weekend!!  Awesome builds everyone!!

I'd like to give the next Weekend Madness another try!  This was my first attempt and not completing on time was all my fault.  I must say that 48 hours goes by quicker than you think!!  I thought I had plenty of time so I spent the first 36 hours in leisure mode and the last 12 in PANIC mode!!  Next time I'll plan better

Between paint drying time, future drying time, decal setting solution drying time, and all of the little things that you always forget take a while, I still believe that you've got to have construction done after day one...preferably with a primer/base coat drying overnight.

I always try to make the first 8-10 hours the most hectic, and eaaaaase back from there. Yes

You're absolutely right dupes!  That's the approach I should have taken....guess I'm not used to sitting at the bench for 8-10 hrs straight.

Agreed... first 7 hours was hard and heavy for me, then it was ease down.

At 46 1/2 hours this is where she was this morning...

Flat Coat on, just needed to add the headlights, add some clear red, amber, and smoke for lights, stretch some sprue for the antenna, and weather. Unfortunately as you can see, the kit decals were a bit sub par when you look at the hood star. So while the flat coat dried, I ate a quick breakfast., then came back to the workbench and completed my mission. Right at 48 hours (with lots of lolligagging time yesterday) here she is, one Vietnam in country M151A1C 106mm Recoilless Rifle "Gun Jeep".

Since I was unhappy with the hood star, I dug out a piece of Verlindin resin stowage (flak vestw/ gear) to cover it up.

Ain't it? Ya gotta love a RR Gun Jeep! The standard US HEAT round could pierce 16 inches of steel armor... the Swedes and Austrians developed a HEAT round that could double that penetrationSurprise

And the beehive round? a 106mm shotgun with a 300m range... that will put some hurt on any infantry assault.Dead

How about the M-10 Ontos with SIX 106mm "shotguns"?

However, are you sure the 106mm APERS rounds filled with ball-bearings or are they flechette-rounds? I know 105mm Howitzer APERS will nail the bad guys to the trees behind them with flechettes which, basically, are nails with fins...

Flechettes...Devil and people thought the MG-42 could bring a world of hurt on an Infantry charge like in Saving Private Ryan or Enemy At the Gates opening sequences... With that Ontos firing all six at once in volley fire (if thats possible) Surprise can you say hamburger?

to paraphrase Cole, Virgil Cole about the Shrike, "Mean Censored, aint they?"

I need to get that new Ontos kit...Whistling My 1/35 Nathaniel Victors will not  be overrunning that display shelf.

Deadline slacking here too. Sad

I think I've decided that even if I kick everyone out of the house, I'd need 3-4 days to finish up a kit due to the dry time I need for coats of paint, gloss coat & decals. My "actual time tally" stands at about 7 hours right now, so I'm happy. (About an hour puttying & sanding, probably a couple hours painting & cleanup) I'm in the middle of some minor house renos right now too, which isn't helping anything I suppose. Anyway, I'm still glad I'm in on this one, nice to see me build something up in a short timeframe. I should have my finished pics Friday.

Hey guys, I managed to fix the flat coat boo-boo and complete the Patton on Monday night, but had a problem with the tracks.  I sprayed them with MM enamel Flat Black, but they never dried.  I waited 24 hrs and as of last night they're still extremely tacky....never had that problem before with enamels on flexible tracks but these tracks seemed to be very "rubbery".  Was this a mistake?? Huh?  Is there a way to strip off the enamel without damaging them?  I won't be able to check them until Sunday as I am out of town until then.  I hate to bug when the GB is mostly done and I didn't even make it on time, but even if I finish this when I return it will still be the quickest I've completed a model! Starting the P-40N this afternoon!

Planning everything out, the wheel sells have very nice detail, so no scratch building. The cockpit walls have no detail. But the all the other parts take up the rather dull looking cockpit like the seat parts, joystick, sights, etc.

I probably will need filler though, but luckily I bought the quick 10min drying stuff.

Im also going to try and airbrush the camo freehand, except for the anti-glare panel, that will need masking.

I want too paint my P-40 in OD and grey. But my mum doesn't want to drive my to the LHS, and I'm not going to walk. So all I have for paints that are close is Tamiya XF-62 and Humbrol acrylic 196. Would these work fine?

XF-62 is perfect for OD, but the Humrol196 may be a bit too light for Neutral Gray. Darken it a bit and you'll be fine. Keep the gray neutral in tone and avoid it getting a blueish hue. A drop or two of black should do the trick.

I don't have any experience with armor kits, but the material you're describing sounds a lot like the vinyl I've dealt with in some kits.  If that's the case, I've always used Tamiya spray primer with enamels or acrylics over it without any problems.

As far as cleaning off, soaking in Simple Green has worked well for me.  It doesn't attack vinyl or plastic, and it'll take either enamels or acrylics off if they haven't been on too long.  Just soak until the paint's loose, use an old toothbrush to scrub off, and rinse.  You can also filter the paint out and re-use the stuff a few times.

Red Baron, lloks like you are on track and doing great.

I hope to, over the course of the day, get all the finished builds posted on the front page.  I should have a few minutes here and there to do so while I'm at work.  Looking forward to all those doing their builds this weekend.

Well done Kermit!

Well the rain doesn't look like its going to stop…

I got both the landing gear done and the prop, with copper brake lines of the main landing gear and I'll be working on the tail wheel. Then I'm going to test the humidity in the garage to see if I can paint in thier.

I'll be painting it in OD & NG, XF-62 & humbrol acrylic 196, with a few drops of black.

20 hours 20min.
