The base white went down no problems

Was hoping to wet sand it down and have the black undercoat accent the panel lines, epic fail here.

Regrouped and decided just to respray the white put the decals down

Going with a Urethane clear top coat with some fast hardner

Who is that masked Man?

The clear is on and waiting to kick off

The base black is on and all the seams look tight ,as soon as its good and dry I can mask off the black nose and tip hinges and start spraying white.

Here is my little 1/72 ME 163 completed in the colour of the first ever rocket powered attack. Pilot was Wolfgang Spatte. Allegedly he was more than a tad ticked off at the groundcrew who decided red is a good colour for his plane! As soon as he landed it was orderd removed LOL!

1/72 ME 163

1/72 ME 163

1/72 ME 163

The tractor was to "clean" so I just muddied it up a bit

1/72 ME 163

The plane is depicted as having just been recovered, therefore it has no wheel dolley.

Thanks Bsyamato .Well both canopies are a mismold ! The Supersonic one is really bad

The other only the ends are missing so I'm stuck with that

I cut off the ends

Made some new ends from an old vac canopy scrap

Not great but once I add some canopy glue the seams will be gone

The basic build is ready for some paint

Actually, i haven't seen any photos of it. I do have a colour plate in one of the Osprey Aircraft of the Aces books, and this has the markings on. But i recall reading somewhere that its un clear if these were painted. But if there are indeed photos of it in markings, then that proves it. It do know it was painted the night before its first mission and Spate wasn't to pleased when he saw it.

Ninetalis

 Bish:

Are you putting any decals on yours, apparently there is some dispute as to whether it was marked or not.

Hey Bish, I hadn't seen your comment,
marked or not? Why don't we let the pictures speak for themselves...

Wow, compared to the paint pots that is one massive model! I think you'll have to buy a big spraygun to paint it LOL!

Sanding inside the intakes must have been "fun"

Office is done along with the seats

Seams along the main fuse

Intake areas cleaned up

The 2 mated up fairly nicely after hours of sanding and test fitting

The forward fuse and wing tips,I cut off the 3 fuse antenae as they run along the seam . I 'll scratch some repacement ones after the sanding is done

test fit of the Canards

Test fit of the forward and main fuse sections looks pretty good, will need minimal filler after a few sanding sessions

Rudders fit decent after some sanding too

Next I've got some delicate sanding to do and hopefuly I wo'nt damage the raised details

Ninetalis

I'm happy to see the GB coming to life!
There all very good builds that I'm seeing so far.

I like Academy like half/half,
They have fun kits, but, all the ones I've made so far have VERY spartan cockpits in my eyes,
I allways wonder if I buy bad cockpit kits or they're all very spartan on the cockpit.
But it isn't a bad brand at all!

With regards, Ninetalis

Academy was the first brand when i started to modelling that give me the possibility to build high kits at very low prices :) at the start of the story lots of their moulds was old molds ofother brands, lately they increase their kits and my main ww2 fighter are academy, and think are actually the best for the price/quality :D (even speaking of 72 scale). I'm a maniac of cockpit details but i build their corsair, hellcat, bf-109, tempest, typhoon, with really few added details:

here some cockpit as example:

the corsair, here i added only seat belts and the sight on the cockpit

the bf-109

tempest

typhoon

hellcat, p-47 and f-14 have the same quality ,good but not high quality the fw-190.I also built the p-51 and p-40 and lots of other kits . For sure i can advice to not get the wildcat, the avenger and the f-104 :) very bad pieces but even between first kits from academy .

The real problem of this brand are decals :(

I have built a few Academy 1/48's and for the price I like them. I am now onto 1/72 moslty because I am fast running out of space to store the built ones. Having siad that, I just bought a 1/32 Trumpeter F4-u4 Corsair (because of the rediculous low price) but atleast the wings can fold up lOL!

Thanks theuns, but I only build 1/48 models...

As we are talking about Academy, they have a new release up their sleve,
A IL-2 with skies in 1/48, but offcourse, we should put in question why we'd buy that one, when there is that brand new Tamiya mold (except for the price ofcourse)

The thing I'm more interested in is their 'new' P-36A/C at Pearl Harbor,
But this is just a re-release with different markings...

Pzl66, maybe something for you is another Avenger!, Academy has a new one up their sleve, with Bunker Hill markings.

With regards, Ninetalis.

You must get the Academy 1/72 P-51 B kit. For the size the cockpit detail it VERY nice. Sure it will never hold anything to a full resin office but in my humble opinion the level of detail was pretty close to the Tamiya 1/48 109E I did in terms of "busy looks"

When I can I will build a model as much out the box as I can as here in Sout Africa most AM resin stuff has to be imported and is amazingly expensive ! Sometimes as much as the kit of just a bangseat :-(

Besides, my skill level will not make the model any more "wow" even if I put all the extras in anyway LOL!

The gloss on the 163 hopefully will cure today so I can decal tonight and do final assembly.

"a case of glue and rolls of sandpaper"  LOL! Brilliant

Say what you will about Academy, but I like the "bang for your buck" they offer. Here in SA the "name brands" are way out of my leque. SO I will stick to the "el-cheapos" for now thanx  LOL!
