Special Wingdings GB - April 2012 ~ Sept 2013

Picked up my Nighthawk from my LHS today...

Box is enormous of course cos inside it's hiding.....LOLMG..........

One of the biggest fuselages I've seen. Here it is next two my 1/32 Phantom II.

Great kit (despite the lack of harnesses supplied for the seat, lucky Tamiya kindly supplied spares with their F-116CJ kit) great details and a lot of pieces. Not to mention rubber tyres, metal landing gear and PE intake covers which look awesome.

I'm gonna build this one OOB, the cockpit is possibly one of the best I've seen from Trumpeter and may only need minimal scratch.

Hey Ninetalis, can I enter another one? I have bitten the bullet (or an AIM9) and gotten the new Trumpeter F-1174A Nighthawk in 1/32. It's also cross over from the Gulf War GB.

Finally, somebody still types my nickname right...
Yeah, Sure, why not? It's kinda a flying wing/Lifting body, right?
But does that mean you'll still be building that F22 too? I really want to see that one become something nice... Looks like a really nice cockpit, maybe I'm gonna buy that cockpit set to...

Yep, I'll be doing the F-22 Raptor first. My LHS just called me this morning to tell me the Nighthawk has arrived. I'm picking it up tomorrow. Can't wait!

Whats teh story behind Ninetalis? heres me thinking you were a pokemon fan with ninetails lol.

My fondness about the name Ninetalis also became worse when I found out 'Ninetails' was based on a old mythological creature from the Japanese mythology.



'Kitsune', in context of Japanese Mythology, are foxes who are most of the time depicted as messengers, They are seen as intelligent beings and posses magical abilities that increase with their age and wisdom. Among these there is the ability to assume a human form.
Other folktales speak of kitsune employing this ability to trick others, other stories portray them as faithful guardians, friends, lovers, and wives. Most of the time, they are feminine.
The more tails a kitsune has (The maximum being nine) the older, wiser, and more powerful it is.
Some stories say that when it becomes a 100years old that it will gain it's ninth tail.
When a 'Kitsune' gains its ninth tail, its fur becomes white or gold and these are granted with a power to see and hear anything happening anywhere in the world. Other tales attribute them infinite wisdom.

Kitsune also means fox in Japanese. (Japenese words have often more than one significance)

But here you go, my crazy story about my crazy name.

Afraid not. I've been away from home since Thurs on a course. I am home this Thurs and i really want to get this done buy the end of the weekend. So fingures crossed.

Ok, so after having a look at the scant LP instructions and doing a test fit with the Academy parts, I've concluded that the tub can fit in without me having to cut away the resin plug at the bottom. Bonus and YAY! This is the part of using resin that I hate.

Fits right in on top of the front wheel bay, I only have to slice away some of the cockpit sill and the kits HUD and IP cover.

Nice to know what kind of putty that is, I really want to try some putty's because I'm not to happy with the one I got now...

Thanks Casper but I know, like I said, I have the kit in the stash and unlike some other people, I actually open my boxes before I shuv 'em into the stash.
First thing I do when I get a new kit is open the box and examine the entire content.
I bought mine because a member of my IPMS Chapter had bought one and forgot he allready had one in his stash and wanted to part with it for I price that I couldn't refuse.

TREY, thanks mate. I do like how the tower as come out. Its my first major scratch building project and i am rather proud of it.

Hey Ninetalis, as far as Academy tubs go, this one isn't too bad. The details on the rtest of this kit are amazing. Really crisp panel lines and very detailed fuselage. It was a comparison with the Hasegawa 1/48 Raptor at my LHS and even though the Hasegawa was $20 more and had some better detail in the bob bays, it lacked on the fuselage and I figured that's what I'm going to be seeing.

Bondo automotive putty. Its cheap, performs well, and lasts a long time. After about 3 years, Im still on my first tube

Casper, Nice to finally see you enter the group build, good thing you have that cockpit set,
I'm never happy with those cockpits that Academy provides.
Other than that, I really love those kits considering the price they ask.
But if I need to buy a cockpit set every time, that advantage is easily reduced again.

I have that kit in my stash, as well as a F-16 in 1/32 and indeed,
that Raptor is huge, they are about the same size!
Anyway, I will be looking at what you will make of this kit and see what I will be able to pick up on it.

Ok my entry for the Wingdings GB, I'm doing the Academy F-22A Raptor. Nice kit, I'm also adding the LP cockpit set in resin. This plane is huge, I mean huge. This fuselage is almost the size of an F-16 in 1/32!!

Im converting the old1/72  hasegawa kit of the MiG-25 into a folded wing, recon thingie. Honestly, Im just winging it. Its practice for kit-bashing/conversions.

I elongated the nose, widened the fuselage and gave it a new fuselage spine. It will later have more doo-dads added to it.

Here is is all puttied up. This thing would be a putty monster even without my conversion. I had to apply another layer of putty to smooth it all out.

The engines were super bland, so I tried my hand at scratch-building new ones. Here is what the originals look like. My new ones look much better, but I dont have photos yet!

The dio is a simple one. The pilot running to his aircraft and some ground crew standing by. I only have 3 figures so far, but am hopeing to add a few more.

I was hopeing to have the completed dio done by tonight before i go away on a course for a week. But afraid it wasn't to be as i still have the figures to paint and the base to finish off.

But i am calling the aircraft done, so i will share that and the completed tower for now.

At the end, i added small wire handles on the canopy and one on either side of the windscreen for the pilot to pull himself out of the seat.

To the tower i added a platform useing sheet styrene. The wheels came out of the spares box and were originally a part of a piece of hasegawa modern US ground equipment.

I should have the dio done within a day or so of coming home so will share those when complete. 

Yeah, I am sorry about not posting wip pics. This was my first GB and she was in process when I entered the GB. It didn't occur to me to post wip pics, but I am going so in other group builds I am part of.

O i came close. Especially on Fri when for some unknown reason, i grabbed the hot part of the iron with my thumb and forefinger. Its lucky no one else was home, even my other half would have been shocked at the language. Ye, i think it will set it off nicely. I am glad i came across the image as its much better than what i originally planned.

Great stuff Bish,that would drive me nuts! I think its really going to make the finished build really pop!

Thanks guys. I know what you mean about the bottom rod, the top one is a bit wonky as well. But i have decided to leave it rather than try and improve it and make things worse. The ladder is attached to it as well.

I have dragged this out long enough and i am glad i can get some paint on it.

You could just replace the last bottom rod to sinply improve the tower

Been a bit quiet on here, so time for a bit of a bump. I haven't been working on the kit this week, but have been practicing my soldering on the access tower. Its not exactly straight, and my soldering needs more practice before i move onto some detailed PE. but i think it will do the job.

Just got to dig out some small wheels from the spares box and add the platform on top, then i can get some paint it.
