I'd love to do a build on this one.  But I don't have a kit, and i have never seen one around.  Do you know who if anyone, made a good sized (1/72 or bigger) kit of this one?

Hi Dom,

That my friend is a C-141A.  My Dad was a flight engineer (actually, he was an instructor, and also the highest level).  It had one of the best safety records of the aircraft used by the USAF.  They found that they could not load as much weight that it was capable of hauling because of the lack of space.  So they remedied it by extending the fuselage.  During the revamp, they also added the refueling recepticle.  After the refitting it became designated the C-141B.

I would like very much to sponser a group build of this aircraft! Smile

Ouch...  The resin is more than you can get the kit for...  They do look like some nice conversion kits though.

The Flight of The Phoenix, the original, was a great film. No computer graphics, just a real airplane ripped up and rebuilt, the darn thing actually flew, I think it kiiled a pilot though.

I made a sorta' remake out of an Aurora P-61 1/48.....lol....still have part of the Horizontal stab.

That would be a very cool diorama. i have one Mono '47, yeah, I always like that plane. I bet there are still some flying somewhere.......

Dom, you are correct.  According to Wikipedia.org, Paul Mantz was a famous racing/stunt/movie pilot and was killed while performing touch-and-go landings with the plane.  You have a good memory.

Here is something that you might be interested in.  I know how much you like the B-52.  There is a small shop that is producing some resin pieces for both the 1/72 Monogram kits and the AMT kits.  Here is their URL:

http://superbugmodels.net/buffmaster/72scale.htm

They have a lot of really cool stuff.

The only 1/72 kit I've seen is Anigrand, about 150U$ Ebay. There's a 1/200 scale in styrene, but you'll need your Opti-Visor.

VooDoo, he was quite a guy, you should post his pic on this thread along with a pic of the plane he saved or his crew.

C-141......"I always liked the lines on that airplane...."

It is deceiving, when you start to look at it, it really does have great lines.

"Super Spooky": a C-141A with three 105MM howitzers, 4 20MM Vulcans, and 5 Mini's....lol...

The C-141B stretch version, "Mega Spooky" has 7 howitzers, and 7 20MM Vulcans....lol...

"Jess like a knife thru butta'......."

I could do it with the 1/200.....who knows, I might actually finish an airplane.....

Hi Dom,

You know I would be very proud to show a picture of my Dad.

And here is a picture of a C-5A Galaxy from Dover AFB, circa 1973.

You get a little bit of an idea of the size of this beast by how far away you had to be to take a picture of it and be able to get the whole thing in the same frame.  This picture was taken right after the C-5's were assigned to Dover.  The base had an open house to welcome the new plane.  I can't remember for sure if it was open to only USAF families or to anybody.  Remember that back in this time, the access to the AFB was not too restrictive.  By the way, that is my late brother at the close far right.

Dom is quite correct.  Anigrand is the only one that makes the C-141 in 1/72 scale and it is resin.  They make it in both the A and B model.  Aurora had one in styrene that was in about 1/108 scale (I do happen to have it  Smile  ) and you can find it on eBay occasionally for big bucks.

I think those are Ford Galaxy's or Fairlanes.

That plane is a C-141 on steroids.

That picture really takes me back, those are the cars an average wage earner could buy off the lot, stock with around 400 horses under the hood, for passing only, of course!....lol

I just took a look and there happens to be an Aurora C-141A on eBay right now.  It currently is at $15.00 and has 2 days and 19 hours to go.  Here is the link

Well, lets hold out hope that someone will release a styrene 1/72 kit.  Maybe the new Aurora will issue one.

I remember my first time up in a C5.  We were doing a deployment exercise.  So we are all standing at parade rest on the ready line as this massive beast taxies up and opens it's back end.   It was freaking HUGE.  I remember thinking  "How the F**K is THAT going to get off the ground.....???"   It still amazes me that those can fly.  I once saw something even bigger though...  An Antonov AN-225 at an airshow I went to on a trip to England a while back...  Now that was unbelievable.  They were selling earplugs at the entrance to the show, and when that touched down and taxied over near the spectator area, I knew why...

Hey wow, thanks for the stories guys! I went inside some sort of transport plane when I visited the Navy base in Pensacola Florida a few years ago and yeah, you could fit my house and workplace inside.....

Gee is that C-141 ALL in resin??? It'd weigh more than a small car!!!

It is all resin, but it is not solid resin.  It is molded like styrene is done.  So it has a little more weight than styrene but not bad.  Here is a couple of links so you can take a look at it:

I started thinking more about the date on the picture of the C-5A Galaxy.  I believe it was closer to 1971.  I was looking at my brother in the picture and he looked pretty young so I did some checking.

What is really amazing is watching these things circle the base waiting their turn to land.  They are so big that they look like they are closer than they really are.  So they look like they are moving really slow.  Which looks really wierd because you wonder how something so huge could stay in the air moving so slow!

One time I sat at the end of the runway waiting for one to land to take a picture of it.  As I sat there with my camera at the ready looking through the view finder waiting for it to fill the view finder, I didn't realize how fast it was coming in and all I got was the landing gear!

Grumble, grumble,

Guys, thought I'd have the A-20 done by the weekend but finishing up I went to drill out the holes on the top of the spine for the two antenni and I guess the drill bit was dull because instead of cutting cleanly though the plastic it cracked the seam line Angry I brushed on a little liquid cement and tried repainting it but the OD green was much lighter. It was then I realized that the green I'd used on the model was Polly Scale USAAF OD green which I don't have any more of and the paint I bought to replace it is Model Master USAAF OD green. Comes in the same bottle but the MM is much lighter than the PS. I figure I can add a little black or dark brown and get a decent match but the seam is now slightly visible and I believe that since I'm repainting the spine anyway I might as well try to putty and sand out the seam.

Grrrrrr, it's not a big thing but gosh it's annoying when I'm so close to finishing the kit. Hopefully I'll be done by next week.

Well, I've had it with these ESCI kits.  This afternoon I went to start touch up and decalling.  When I picked up the sabre to do a few touch ups I noticed a kind of wrinkly ripple pattern in the paint.  I touched it and it shifted under my finger in small areas.  It has completely lost adhesion to the plastic.  This was my last 1/48 Sabre, so now all I can do is another kit.  I don't have room to store the 1/32 sabre I have so I need to pick something else out of my mini stash.  I am so disgusted at this point...  I am currently waiting for some test styrene to dry.  I put some of the chrome on it to see if I can find out if it was the plastic or paint which caused the issue.  I'll sleep on it before I pull another kit.  Right now I am so demoralized that I don't even want to look at another kit at the moment.

Very disheartening. Maybe Esci was trying out a new silicone mold release, or maybe there is a special primer you need before using that spraybomb.

I dunno.....maybe just by dumb luck you ended up living over the burial grounds of the in-laws of the last burial ground you lived over?????
