The hump on the back? That was a fairing that contained ECM and other electronic gear. It was introduced and became standard on the A-4F, (I want to say around 1968) but was retrofitted to earlier surviving Skyhawks as well. It was also removed from certain later model Skyhawks in special roles such as Top Gun and Blue Angels.

This site has lots of great info and then some on the A-4

Do you know a reference to the avionic pack v.s the ''small fairing''?

The Italeri is the old ESCI. Good enough, but not the best. For that, get a Trumpeter.

Also, no need to model so fast.

I might pick up an Italeri 1/72 Hun tommorow. Or maybe A Revell Monogram 1/48 Crusader or  Hun.

Sounds good to me. The fuel tanks in the kit are not the proper size? If the rocket pods are the 19 shot type, I suggest getting the Hasegawa weapons set

Too high speed.

The correct pod is the XM-157 7 shot 2.75 FFAR rocket pod as used on UH-1 gun ships.

Here's a Misty, 56-3882 in fact, with a good overall view of the pods and the tanks. Even has his brake down, which is notched for stores even though they didn't load them in the center.

Cobra Co. makes a nice set.

Yeah be sure to fix the issue before painting becuse it was a major pain for m. And about the A-6, I couldnt find it at the hobby shop so I;m going with something else until I order it. But I will do the A-6! I'm not too pleased with my phantom as of now!

Stick: Again, the 100 looks good and I am anxious to learn your technique for giving the back end some heat discoloration because that is something I've struggled to master.

In all honesty this will be something new. I have not tried to do heat discoloration before.Embarrassed

Stik- she will be a Misty flying out of Phu Cat in 1967- 1968. I need to find 2.75 rocket pods and 335 gal tanks though.

Bondo, that F-100 will be nice! Will you be building it as a Weasel or Misty FAC?

Pilot, a Specter sounds awesome! In 1/48 that will be BIG! I wish that I had the room for one of those.

Well I am nearing the finish line of the F-100 that I am building for another GB here (Monogram Mafia II) that I started a few days before this GB began. I thought this would be a good place to share how it looks now. This is gonna be marked from a squadron flying out of TanSon Nhut in 1965 on "temporary duty" (TDY).

Once this Hun is complete, I will kick off my F-104.

Here is the overall paintjob (needs touch ups) Ugh! a gap! I think I will cut out the USAF emblem so no stipes are used. Good or bad idea?

Yes...You're correct it was an H you had in that pic. I did learn on an H...then moved to a VL which I still have.

I think I will buy a TG later on.

I would love to be in on this build.  Trying to decide between a Marine F-8 or VA-195 A-7.  The F-8 is an older release of the monograms F-8 and I have 2 A-7  an old monogram or a very old ESCI kit. Any suggestions?

Oh the Thud is my favorite Vietnam Air Warrior.... Ever since I read "Thud Ridge" when I was a kid in school. I have a soft spot for guys facing long odds: TBDs at Midway, the 82nd at Nijmegen, etc. I have a couple in my stash. Depending on how long it takes for the F-104. I really want to get that one built as I started the cockpit last year, and then stalled out when I moved in June. I really want to get it finished first. But the Thud is favorite of mine so I will seriously give it a chance.
