Check out my blog here.
Hey Stik. Came across this just before in one of our local newspapers.
WATSON, Allan Archibald (Skip). DFC, 4212905, RNZAF, Squadron Leader On 9th January 2012 Skip passed away at Auckland Hospital after a brief battle with pneumonia.
So my earlier comment was wrong. But he was a squadron leader and had a DFC. Which would probably account for why his aircraft has decals made about it.
And heres the story behind Gloria Lyons.
rnzaf.hobbyvista.com/gl.html
Actually named after a young CHCH girl with tuberculosis.
looked through some online hobby stores and NONE had decals to match any of my existing kits....but I did see an Academy 1/72 F-18A kit with Aussie markings for a steal! Normal MSRP is $33.... the kit was on-sale for $8.99!! How could I pass that up?!
Looks like ive gotten myself a new addition.
I will commit to the build with Brian Carbury's Spitfire Mk I, coded XT-W. Will use the 1/72 Airfix kit.
Not sure what scale your typhoon is. But the bottom aircraft is 486 sqn.

Good choice Check. Sure you dont wanna use a better kit though? The airfix one is pretty nasty. (although it does build up nice with a bit of work)
I have one Tamiya version in the stash, but I'm more familiar with how the Airfix goes together. Plus, I may use their new molding. I've only built one of those. If anything changes, I'll let you know ahead of time.
I'm pretty sure I'll have to cobble the markings together from Xtradecal codes.
I wanted to do "Cobber" Kain's, but--no decals, and it seems he did have "Paddy" inscribed on the fuselage.
I've had both Brian Carbury and Colin Gray on my "to-do" list for several months, now, anyway.
Thanks for the motivation to get started.
No worries.
Cobber flew hurricanes. He died in an old 2 blade version.

my typhoon is 1/48
bollocks. lol somehow i knew that would be the case.
Im happy with my new purchase. I dont have a 1/72 Hornet yet!
Thats cool. I should add a couple modern aircraft to my collection. The A-4's a good start. But theyre all museum peices here now.
I was doing a little research on my builds as I wanted to make sure that they were operating during an overseas deployment . So I may have to change the colour scheme on a several builds to suit .
Firstly , the RAAF UH-1H will now be finished in an overall white scheme serving in the Sinia Desert in 1982-1986 as part of the Multi National Force Observers
Next the S-70A (UH-60) stays the three tone camo scheme serving in East Timor for the Australian Army
The UH-1B will now be finished in an overall Olive drab finish serving in South Vietnam in 1968
The Pilatus PC-6 Porter is also finished in olive drab and serving in South Vietnam at Luscombe Field Nui Dat 1970
The Westland Wessex HAS-31B operated from HMAS Melbourne from 1963 -1987 .
817 Squadron embarked onboard the melbourne accompanied the HMAS Sydney on voygages to transport men and supplies to vietnam during the conflict . So I'll go with helo number 34
The S-70B-2 Seahawk operated in the Gulf as part of the blockade duties in November 1990
John .
I found some additional info on the Westland Wessex and HMAS Melbourne's ship movements during 1966
The text above mentions that from the 30th April to the 4th of May , HMAS melbourne escorted HMAS Sydney to Soth Vietnam . This next pic shows HMAS melborne with a Wessex parked on the very front bow just after she left Sydney en-route to South East Asia .
Hopfully I can find a good reference pic of the S-70B-2 Seahawk operating in the Gulf as well as the S-70B-1 Blackhawk in East Timor .
John
Hey Helo, try this one on for size.

Great pictures John!
WOW , awesome pic of the tiger-tailed Sea Hawk , Scorp .
It was only last week that I was looking on Hawkeye Models web site and printed out an order form to fill in and send away . I ordered two S-2E/G Tracker conversion sets but I completely forgot to check what other decal sheets they have . So I'll keep a note about those special tiger tail markings .
I just ordered from Hannants the Trumpeter Fairey Gannet AS-1/4 and some Xtradecal decals for the RAN . I also splurged a little and bought the resin wing fold set for the Gannet as well .
I guess I'll have to keep an eye out for a RAN Sea venom in 1/72 scale .
Wow our model club is doing a Seahawk group bulid next year but there is no way I would be able to produce that finish.
Anyways I would love to join this GB if I can. I have the Trumpeter P-40B in the stash with Jack Bartle's markings in the box. I won't be able to start straight away as I'm horrible at building multiple kits at the same time but my armoured car is passed the halfway mark so I should be able to start the P-40 before the year is over.

Nice one blitz. Aussie pilot with RAF.
Welcome aboard Blitz. What scale is it ? I am interested myself.
Cheers
Tony
I'm just taking it one GB at a time.
From what i can find, its a 48 scale kit. The reviews ive seen say you need to correct the short shallow cockpit and overzealous rivet detail.
Thanks for the welcome Scorpio and Tony. The kit is the 1:48 scale one and yeah it has that cockpit problem. I'm tossing up between replacing it or just leaving the canopy closed so it's not too visible. I like the look of the rivets although I'm really not sure how it will look until after the paint goes on so fingers crossed.
I'm looking forward to working on it. I think this is one of the nicest looking P 40 schemes out there with RAF desert camoflauge, red nose and shark mouth. I've got a copy of Osprey's Tomahawk and Kittyhawk aces of the Commonwealth and if memory serves correct, there is some information on Bartle so I've got some bedtime reading. Hopefully I'll be able to do it justice.
Well, I managed to pick up an inexpensive AMT F/A-18 Hornet in 1/48 scale. Now I am just trying to find an affordable source for the decals I want to use on it.

A bit much for my budget so I am trying to source a set more locally in the US. Oh and of course, after I got the F/A-18, I noticed that my 1/48 Airfix Canberra had markings for the RNZAF... I'm going to hold off on the Canberra. I really don't have enough room to have any place to put a kit that big right now, so I'll keep looking for the decals. Leading Edge had a set of the same decals (#48.55) but they are OOP and I can't find any. I'll keep you posted on the hunt.
Rich
In the Hangar: 1/48 Hobby Boss F/A-18D RAAF Hornet,
On the Tarmac: F4U-1D RNZAF Corsair 1/48 Scale.
Sweet, That Canberra has allot of inaccuracies for a kiwi bird. If you're going down that road make sure you do your research. Also make sure your lead shaping skills are up to par. Needs a bucket load of weight in the nose and theres not much room for it.
Sparrow, shall I put you down for the F/A-18 then?
wow. Hornet's here already. Thanks Squadron!
first impressions: Definitely worth the $13 or so after shipping. Plenty of nice, recessed detail. LOADS of decals (printed by Cartograf!). Full armament... But is it worth the $33 MSRP? Well, let's see how it all goes together!
Yup. This is the exact Kit.
And this is the decal sheet.
The decal sheet comes with some resin AMRAAM missiles and a few other things. The Decals are coming from Canada, so they will take a while to get here.
CallSignOWL Sparrow, shall I put you down for the F/A-18 then?
that box looks like it's seen better days
Yeh, but it's a builder, and the kit itself is supposed to be intact.
