I noticed that trend as well.  It just seems that aircraft are a bit more popular in general for some reason.  I think in my 40+ years, I have done hundreds of aircraft, but only a handful of Armor kits(Mostly US and German WWII Tanks), and maybe 20-30 cars.  Oh yeh and a plethora of spacecraft, both real and scifi.  I always seem to have bad luck with car models, and I don't have the patience for armor I guess.  And aircraft have always interested me more anyways.  I guess most modellers just like the cool factor that aircraft have, more than armor.  Not that armor isn't cool, but an APC just doesn't have the sleek lines of something like an SR-71 or F16 for example.  That's my theory anyways.  Ironically, my first kit was a Revolutionary War cannon.  My parents got it for me at the gift shop of the Bunker Hill Memorial in Charlestown MA when I was 4.  The next two kits were cars, a 1965 Corvette, and a Nomad.  My first aircraft were 1/72, a combo kit with a P40 and a Spitfire.  I fell in love with aircraft with those two kits, and 95% of what I have built to date has been aircraft of one type or another.

Blitzwing

I didn't notice the build only comprised of aircraft so far, but it is a similar trend to my IPMS club where planes are dominant by a vast majority with armour being a distant third behind cars. Hopefully some armour will come along.

I would usually expect to see that many sprues on a Dragon armour kit. Makes me shudder at the thought of Wingnuts expanding into armour...

Helo: That's a very nice looking start to your Caribou. I must admit I've never really taken much notice of them but that black nose really does give the plane a very Snoopy like profile.

Not just that, apart from some of the shermans, unless you know what your looking at you dont know where alot of vehicles are from. Aircraft help by putting huge signs on them stating "Im from this country dont shoot me down" vehicles dont really need that.

Well.  The Tamiya 1/48 F4U-1D arrived safe and sound, so now just a matter of decals and figuring out what paint I need to get.  Here is a box shot.

Hope to have the rest soon.  I'm still waiting for my primary kit, the F/A-18.  It should be here sometime this week, and hopefully those Leading Edge decals for it as well.  Then again, I'll need more paint.. lmao.

Mikey, do you know what colors the F4U-1D is going to need to use with those decals?

Overall dark sea blue.

(Quote from the ventura sheet)

F4U-1 Corsair, ‘Tutae Wera’, has a weathered Glossy Sea Blue scheme.
The aircraft was, almost certainly NZ5416, which served with both No.3
and No.30 Servicing Units.

You will have to find some new N's for the serial number (think i mentioned this at one point) i had to pinch them for mine as they kept folding over on me.

I'll just scan the decals, then use PSP to create the Ns and print them on transfer paper.  That way I can match them up to be a perfect size and font for the original decals.

I will probably do a "Just entered service" build of her.  I am not very good at weathering, and I don't want to trash a perfectly good kit and decals. lol

Oh, note that the tamiya instructions say to cut the front aerial off, dont, it was on all RNZAF corsairs.

Mikey & miss Owl, with your kind permission, I would like to change my entry. When looking at the Fe.2B schemes, there is an all black night bomber version with a killer bomb rack that is just begging to be built, and as just one of those builds would be daunting enough, I have to lean towards that version if it's to be my only crack at it. Unfortunately, it does not fit within the parameters of this GB. I do, however, have in my stash a more than suitable replacement. It is a 1/48 Italeri (ex Acc. Min.) TBM-1 Avenger (s/n NZ2509) that flew out of Whenuapai in '44. Hope this works for you.

Just caught that Mikey and was all set to edit it when I saw your post. Talk about timing!

...and no worries, I'll still be posting pics of the Fe.2b here on the forum.

Well, I have spent most of this evening trying to research the RAAF Corsairs, and I am coming up soo short.  I can't find a thing.  A good amount of info and images on the RNZAF birds, but just about nothing on the Aussie planes.  Does anyone have any info sources they could recommend?

I've posted a query over on Britmodeller forum about Australian Corsairs - maybe someone there knows of an Aussie pilot that flew for a different squadron, such as the FAA.

Well I checked my stash and I've found a subject that will break the mold of an all aircraft setting.  I've got Tamiya's 1/700 HMAS Vampire as well as White Ensign's PE upgrade for V&W class destroyers.  Problem will be finding build time, which I know will not open up till well into next year.

Thankfully a quick image search I've discovered the ship did carry a disruptive scheme late in it's career.

regards,

Jack

That's what happens when they have to put a 1.5" diameter ball of metal coils in your brain. lol

I spent today trying to clear out some in progress kits.  My F5 Aggressor (Tiger II), a 1/48 Mig 37 Ferret, and a couple of others.  I moved my big 1/32 Corsair to a display area (On top of one of my stereo speakers), and got some finish work done on another Tiger II.  Then I had an empty Testors MM Glue bottle.  The one with the precision tip.  And a regular testors glue bottle.  The one with the too big tip.  So I transferred the regular glue into the MM bottle to make use of the precision applicator.

I put an offer in on some Intermediate Blue and Gloss Bright Blue paint (MM) on eBay.  Now I have to get some Insignia Blue which is the closest color match I could find to the Oxford Blue required for the F18.

I'll be starting with the F18 if it get's here with it's decals soon.  Or I might start the Corsair.  It will only take a few days to get the F18 kit here, but I could get a lot done on the Corsair in that time.

That reminds me.  Does anyone know what the proper interior paint scheme is for an RNZAF Corsair?

Interior green, Thats what i used anyway. The aircraft were transferred directly from American service into NZ service, so frequently after a while the star and bar would start showing through the roundels. Kiwis did alot of field mods to their aircraft, but paint usually stayed original colours.

Thanks for the info.  I'll just follow normal USN/USMC colors for the interior then.

Thats pretty much all i did. Frequently that's why you see an RNZAF bird with pristine markings, but the rest of the aircraft looks like its been flying through sand storms.

Well, the F/A-18 showed up today, and it arrived with a bunch of missing parts and damaged landing gear doors, so it's getting returned.  I am looking for a replacement.  Has anyone ever done a 1/48 ESCI F/A-18A kit?  If so, what are your thoughts on it.  Theres one up on eBay for a semi decent price but I haven't built that one before.

Yeh.  It was missing all the underwing stores, the port landing gear bay doors and half of the landing gear wheel for that side as well.  And one of the landing gear doors for the other side was badly mangled...  Fortunately I used eBay to get it so getting my money back won't be a big issue.  In the meantime, I need to find a replacement.  I could get a Revell F/A-18E, or that ESCI/ERTL A model.  there's also a Scalecraft A model which is probably the same thing.  I have to keep it under $20 so my selection is somewhat limited.  I was originally going to get a Hasegawa kit, but I wasn't able to sell my 1/72 canberra to finance it.. lol  I wat to try and pick one tonight so it could still get in the mail tomorrow.  I have no idea when those decals will get here from Canada though.  And I need to find out what the exact FS numbers the callouts on the decal sheet are for.  I have the Dark Sea Blue, but I need Intermediate Blue, Oxford Blue and Bright Blue.  Oh yeh, and some kind of light gray.  The problem is the only Oxford Blue I can find is from TopFlite for RC planes.  and none of the color names are useful since theres like 6 different colors from various companies called Intermediate Blue, and they are all different.  Their equivalents listed for the Oxford Blue, but they are all different too.  So I need to get ahold of the decals so I can actually read the FS numbers for the callouts.  The only images of the color sheet is too small to read.  That's that graphic I put up earlier in the thread.  It's just too small for me to reed, and zooming in makes it unreadable when it pixelates.

Hey OWL, can you also put me down for an Italeri 1:48 SBD 5 Dauntless RNZAF markings. Its an Ex Accurate Miniatures kit, to the point where it still has their markings and logos on the sprues.
