The Pilot's parachute served as a seat cushion correct?

I always thought pilots sat on there parachutes, but apparently this wasn't always the case. Apparently, the Fw 190's seat was designed to allow the pilot to wear either a back or bottom chute, sothis would determine if he had a cushion or not.

I normally paint cushions with Tamiya Flat brown, you could also use black.

Bish is right. I could be both. Seems though that most of the pics I found have the pilot wearing a chute on his back, so a seat cushion would be fairly common.

Several of my reference books show 190 pilots with back chutes on.  I think as the war progressed the back chute became more the norm instead of the clumsy seat chute.

wjt, which option are you going for with the cushion. If your going to make your own, i would love to see how you do it. I think a lot of kits are missing items like this, even resin seats can leave them out. My Ju 87 didn't have the back cushion for the pilot.

I should really stop being lazy and go through my books rather than just useing google all the time. I have that book as well Nathan and it would have soon told me not all chutes were worn on the butt and that this would need a seat cushion. Thanks for the images. I need to keep this in mind when i do mine as i think the pilot figure i am useing has the other type of chute.

wjt619

hey guys,

In my eduard A-5, the seat does not have any custion. Where all A5's produced that way? I have been getting mixed photos on them. Any help would be nice as I can either purchase an AM seat or use some milliput to scratch one.

Also, and more importantly, does anyone have any A5's in winter camo?

Any help would be really great!    THANKS!!!

wjt - Might I suggest taking a look at what Ultacast has to offer in the way of a seat. I have used one on my 1/48 Spitfire and have several others for future builds. They are simply excellent in their detail and molding.

As far as the True Details resin cockpit for mine goes it has a cushion molded on it. Speaking of, I just finished releasing all the parts for it from the molding blocks. Took a fair amount of work with the micro saw and sanding sticks. But, definitely worth the work.

Nathan - Thanks for the images.

Hey Bish... I have taken kleenex type tissue, folded it up tight and in the shape of the seat cushion, and wet it down with a thinned down mixture of the color of the cushion you want to make and let it dry. Makes a nice looking cushion and its textured too. also, if you want some realistic looking tears, place your dampened tissue over the seat or back area, place a small gob of filler putty on it and gently tear the damp tissue around it. Makes it look like the cushion foam is pushing up through a tear in the cover. Takes a bit of trial and error but looks great when done right.

Doug, thanks for that. I had thought about tissue, but wasn't sure if the texture might not look right in 72nd. I will have to do some testers before my next build.

Things are really coming together now on both kits. Very few seams here. Just some dabs of Mr. surfacer.

This Hasegawa boxing comes with photo etch to represent the cockpit side armor. Its very thin and looks great. It also gives you the option of plastic pieces as well.

Good going Nathan. I do like the photo etch armor plating. Man youre well under way with that thing. You look to be about ready for priming and painting.

LOL! Bish, I have been building this in my head for months now! (ha) I know how I want it to look and how to procede step by step. It hasnt failed yet except as stated earlier that it has been a very poor fit during assy. Thats OK though, Been there before and try always to have a "plan B" ready. Truth being my brother, I'm already building the second one(in my head) right now! Take care my friend.

You betcha. It not only came with the 5 frets but there are 2 of everything except for 1 fret which is tools and toolboxes. Nicely laid out kit I'll tell you.

Nice, shame i don't build 48th scale, but i have enough on my hands without adding another. These Royal Edition sets look very nice with the added extras.

Was watching the Military Chanel yesterday about the last days of the Reich and captured these still shots:

Definately a Dora in the 81/82 scheme, but I wonder what crate? All I can see is the black group bar. Just thought it was a cool color pic.

I could be mistaken, but that top one looks like Hans Rudels D-9.

What do the rest think. The cross seems a bit thinner on the wreck, but there can't be many D-9's with thgose markings on an area thats been painted over.

Nice pic Bish, you may be right. All I got is the wrecked dora looks to be missing the canopy? And there is a clear color demarcation just above the fuselage cross and slightly aft. Not sure if I can see a color demarcation on Rudel's ride or not... How about the hight of the green demarcation on the side of the nose, are they both in the same spot, or is the demarcation line in the wrecked pic slightly higher up?

Given the angle of the pic of the wreck, i think the line on the nose is the same, about half way up. But the thing that really sticks out is the markings. Those on the pic i posted are the same that Rudel carried on his Ju 87G-2. And they are unusal in that they are pre war markings, not the markings for a Geschwaderkommodore at this period. And the wreck has the same markings.

The reason i am so interested is that i am a big 'fan' (for want of a better word) of Rudel and have his D-9 in 32nd and 72nd scale. For the 72nd kit i have a set of superscale decals and they say Rudel carried bomb racks under the wings. But all the colour plates i have seen, and the 32nd kit, don't show this. In the pic i posted, you can't see under the wing. But the wreck shows most of the wing and there doesn't appear to be a bomb rack.

Nathan, is that footage on line, and is there more to that sequence that the still of the first photo is from.

Mustang, apologies for side tracking a touch. I know this isn't directly related to this GB. But any possable info on Rudel and his aircraft, and i my attention is drawn.
