I just had a look at the barrels I ordered: and found out that the barrels that go through the wheel bays are supplied in 2 pieces!

www.hannants.co.uk/.../MR48019

I taped the wings together and cut the plastic barrels at the point where the metal ones are split. Then I tried to slide them into place with my tweezers. They went in perfectly! So i suppose i can keep on working on the wings!

Well, seems like i have to wait untill the end of May untill i can glue the wings together then...

Nevermind, I have enough to do on this Model in the meantime, not to speak of the other 8 models on my bench...

I didn't really see any feasible way to install them in my D-9 after the wings were glued. They had to go in before as they had a large base on the inside of the wheel well and the wheel well wasn't quite large enough to slide them in after it was glued. Also, I initially planned on opening the hatches on mine but later decided against it as it really takes away from the lines on the Dora. Having decided that, it was a challenge to get them all closed up, especially the wing cannon hatches as they were designed to be open and I don't think a lot of thought was put into having them closed. I can't speak for the front end of the A models as I'm not sure what all is "opened up" on those.

Ok, thank you, Bish!

The really bad thing about the PE is that the side cnsoles are also replicated using PE parts with the wrong color. But I think a bit of drybrushing should blend them in enough to not look awkward...

The problem with the barrels is, that they NEED to be installed before joining the wing halves. I think you can see tell better by seeing the instructions. Here is a link to them (it's on page 6).

Clemens, your right about the gun camera, it was fitted to the left wing.

I normally fit metal barrels after the wings are joined, in fact I usually do it right near the end. They should just fit into the holes for the barrels.

Personally, I wouldn't worry to much about the colours not matching. Who's to sday the IP hasn't ben replaced and there fore a slightly different shade. Once closed up, the IP will be under the cockpit shroud anyway and so in more shadow than the rest of the pit.

Open, defiantly, lets see it all.

Oh, and Joe: Please add my Ta152C-0 to the entry list as well. It's Dragon's kit in 1/48.

Thank you in advance, Clemens

I finally had some time for my two birds...

The Ta's cockpit is airbrushed and awaiting detail work, washing and so on.

I haven't started on the office of the Eduard kit though. I had a look through the instructions and thought it would be easier to start with the wheel bays.

Said part of the Fw190 A8 assembly is almost complete, but I have some questions to you guys:

  • There some small disc-like raised detail on the leading edge of each wing. I supposed that this should resemble the gun-camera, so I sanded the one on the right wing down, as the 190 had only one gun-camera as far as i know. Is this correct?
  • You have to install the guns before glueing the wing halves together, but I have to wait for a set of metal barrels. Is there any way of installing the barrels after assembly?
  • The supplied PE-parts don't fit the RLM66 color I wanted to use (a Gunze color). They are a tad too dark and tinted slightly blue. Shuold I use the right color and try to blend the PE in with some drybrushing and washing or should I use a matching, but otherwise wrong color?
  • Would you folks prefer opened up gun-hatches together with a partially visible engine or everything closed up?

I hope some of you take the time to answer all those questions.

Cheers, Clemens

Rigidrider: Man that is some really good action youve got going there! Airies has a habit of making some great engine kits. Ive built a couple and think their detail is second to none.

Zvezda1980: You aint too late to join in at all! Glad to have you and glad to have somebody else brave enough to build an Eduard kit. Good detail and accuracy is the plus side of those kits. I'll put you in the intro post.

Clemens: Hang in there with running the GBs and participating in others. You've got lots of time left here.

Hello to everyone

If I am not too late to join in, please count me in with a Fw-190 A-9 machine from Eduard's kit in 1/48 - since I see this variant is not represented in this GB yet.

Greetings

Steve... Its a bit confusing at first , but its a great engine kit! Depending on application, additional trimming and adjusting will be required but well worth the effort. My only suggestion is to wait until instllation before fitting exhaust. Due to the fact that I'm addapting to a kit that was never intended to have an engine installed I've encountered "special" issues with it, but I think its going to be OK.

Clemens... Plenty of time left! This last week or so has been the oppisite for me, I'm kinda-sorta semi retired and I've been a bit under the weather so I've had loads of time to build, not to mention my wife is back home for a visit for a month in the Philippines. Any way Building is a balance as a builder on another sits says To hurried makes bad results, to lax makes no results, or something like that. Hes right.

I'm kinda at a stop right now still waiting for parts I ordered tyo arrive. Oh well... You have a great week! Hope to see more progress from all soon! Love the WIP  pics.

Doug,

That's a really cool 190 you've go going there.  Great work with the thread.  I have that same BMW 801 in the stash so I'm really looking forward to what you do with it.  Keep up the good work!

Looking nice, Doug! I can't wait to see what you'll build out of this kit...

I am working on my Butcher birds as well, but didn't have much time for them. Limited bench-time lately and managing the Carrier GB makes progress slow...

Well, I have the fuselage about right to begin with, after cutting panels off, they need to be thinned, (a bit more before final assy) I opened up the vents and cleaned up the cuts. The fire wall bulkhead and gun deck han to be made fron scratch styrene pieces... so far so good...

The shoulder harness attached to the cockpit upper deck behind the seat, not the headrest. I can post a pic or two later if you dont' have any.

Well, I'll post the pics soon but I have a few more small items checked off in my build. I'm scratchbuilding safety harnesses to add to my modified seat (not necessarily accurizing the seat; I just didn't like it as it was).

Cockpit's coming along. Hasegawa wasn't much concerned about portraying an accurate cockpit in which to park their ugly seat, were they? Pretty pathetic but I'm stubborn so.....

Hey, did all the Fw190s shoulder harness's attach to the base of the head rest? If so, since the head rest is actually part of the canopy and the canopy had explosive bolts to eject it in the event it was too damaged to open normally, umm I'm guessing the pilot better be damn sure to unbuckle his seat belts before blowing the canopy. Or was that an early form of ejection seat? LoL

Bill.

On the bench:  Lindberg 1/32 scale 1934 Ford Coupe and a few rescue projects.

In queue:  Tamiya 1/35 Quad Tractor or a scratch build project.

Thanks guys... I'm gonna give it my all. The thing I like about the thread method of cutting is if you take your time and use the right size thread you can actually cut between rivit lines, like is shown in the pictures. You cant do that with a saw or ziz wheel. Well its cautiously coming along...More soon!

Thanks for encouragment and support.

Just take your time with this one. Build the engine like it is its own model. Go slow and test fit test fit test fit.

No argument Here Joe!...

OK , Having said that , let us begin... This will be an Fw190 A-4 flown by Lt. Heinrich Steer. "Bazi" (Rascal) of 6/JG54 Esatern front 1944. I found a cool little Monogram at a yard sale and am going to attempt to dress it up a bit, with Edwuard cockpit PE, Eduard guns, Aires BMW 801 resin engine, White metal landing gear, True detail wheels and Msap decals. The fuselage will never do the way its molded so lets start cutting that sucker up! Hope I can do this one right...

Thanks

More Doras!!YesYes

I may have to extend the GB to accomodate it but the way its looking I don't think I'll have any complaints about the short extension. This Eduard A-8 is really alot of work if carried out to the letter!

I agree with Nathan for sure on the landing gear and wheels.  As for the gun cowl and prop I'm going to replace those with an Eduard prop and the gun cowl will be displayed open. The gear I'm going to attempt to rob from the Eduard stash and make it work. I will say that Eduard has it going on with detail and accuracy but are a real "treat" to build. But..............the results are worth it if you can get through the build ok. Decals on the Tamiya kit are bad as I hear but LOOK like crap when looking at them. Going AM for sure with those. I bought my Tamiya D-9 for 30 bucks so thats right in line with the Eduard stuff. I'm actually looking forward to a semi easy build as the Eduard kit has really kicked my tail so far.

Well, Eduard hands down for detail and accuracy, Tamiya fits a little better, but is less detailed and less accurate- Most of these issues include too short landing gear and small wheels, which takes away from the notable 190 gear stance. But also wrong prop and gun cowl. Depends if these issues bother you. I will say, the Eduard hands down is the best bang for the buck, especially the Profipack with pe and masks. Heck it goes for 25-30 bucks, whereas the Tamiya can be much more. One thing for sure, Tamiya kit needs aftermarket decals because they are completely wrong and inaccurate schemes, and the decals don't behave well.

Thanks for the kind words Joe and this has been a real joy of a GB.  I'll throw this out to the expert builders checking in (maybe it's been answered already).  I'm looking at adding a 1/48 "Dora" to the stash, what should it be?
