William... I just received my BMW 801D and am NOT disappointed at all! Well illustrated and very highly detailed. It was an Aires kit from Ebay from max the modeler (if you have problem finding, let me know). The first Fw190 will be a Dora-9 White 3 of JG26 - 5 staffle 1/32 scale, a "vintage" Revell  Lone Eagle kit circa 1990 I think. As I said earlier posts, (and having researched further without any further changes) the record keeping was poor to non existant, due to the constant moving and pressure , bombing, etc...and little is recorded or known about White 3 or the pilot , only that he survived the war, having been seen shortly after surrender took effect, setting his aircraft down in a field, powering down and just walking away. I plan on atleast 1 other (probably more) I want to do the A-5 (I think) flown by Josef "Pepi" Jennowine (Black 7) flown during the Battle of Kursk. I think it stated that he flew Black 5, But was in Black 7 the day he (after aerial combat) had to make a forced landing behind enemy lines on July 27th and was never heard from again. Thats the 2 firm builds I had in mind at this time... How about you, I'd like to hear about your build thoughts...

Take care...

Doug (RR)

Aires and CMK both make resin BMW 801s.

For PE, Eduard all the way. For seat belts, do yourself a favor and pick up a set of HGW microtextile belts. You can get  them at Hannants or via eBay. And you actually get two sets so you can use the other on another subject later on.

As for resin cockpit sets, I dunno. There's several out there.

Sorry, I didn't mean to confuse as there are many minor differances, but I was refering to the engine only.

I understand completly! That book  in my opinion a great one! Lots of RLM info, illustrations, fold outs, exploded views and break down views as well as actual photos. And as you said, possibly different info, but a lot of research appears to have gone into this book. I got it on Amazon, used for about 6 bucks. Again, its ...Focke-Wulf  Fw190 by Robert Grinsell, Illustrater by Rikyu Watanabe There is a BMW 801 engine on Ebay 1/48 scale for 20.00. I just typed in Fw190 Detail and it showed up, If you cant find it I will try to get the seller info for you! Good luck William...

Nathan,

Thanks for explaining all that to me. Sometimes when I look sometging up, whether online or in a book, I get many different answers! Oh well, now we have the Forum on Finescale!!!

So , I am now on the hunt for a BMW801D-2 engine for my G.B. FW 190 a-5!

I'm putting all this work into it because, it is one of my favorites. Just love the look.

Now, onto where and who manufacturs the best AF resin and PE cockpit sets and seats???

Thanks Again!!!

The A-4 also differed from the A-3 by a short mast on top of the vertical stabilizer for the radio aerial attachment. I believe there was a slight difference in the horizontal tail as well. The A-5 also had a lengthened wing root fairing due to the nose length increase, which is also a good giveaway. The engine: BMW801D-2. As far as aftermarket, the Meteor productions and cutting edge are the same company, now out of business for sometime. Aires produces the best quality for the fw 190, but not sure if you'd need it on the eduard kit, given it comes with PE. I'd also check with Modeldesignconstruction out of the UK. Their resin sets are supreme and they make a set for the Tamiya fw series but I'm sure it could work on the eduard kit. Happy hunting!

WJT...

According to my book Focke-Wulf Fw190 by robert Grinserll The Fw190 A-4 Differed from the A-3 only in the addition of a methanol-water boost system (MW50) to the BMW 801D-2, The A-5differed from the A-4 only in that included lengthened engine mounts to provtge increased strength and reduced vibration, The overall aircraft length increase was only 15.5 cm (6.1 in) and the A-5 was distinguishable from earlier models only by compairing the hinged upper deck machine gun cover panel.

I tried to copy that word for word (in a nut shell) from the book on pages 7  and 8. Hope that helps some...

Sorry to keep posting guys but, I am having a hard time finding an aftermarket cockpit for the fw190 a5.

I heaard Meteor Productions made a great one but they are out of biz. What about cutting edge or black box? Or even true details? What is your opinions on the most accurate and detailed out there?

Or was it the BMW 801 D engine, used in the FW 190 a5?

Hey Guys,

Got a question for you regarding the buther bird GB. I am building the A-5 variant from eduard.

Which engine was used in it? I have heard different answers. Was it the D-2 or MW 50 thate some A-5s were tested with the MW 50 installation: this was a mix of 50% methyl alcohol and 50% water, which could be injected into the engine to produce a short-term power boost?

Or am I completly wrong with my guesses?

Thanks!!

William

Yeah, Nathan - The Dragon Ta152C-0 destructions want you to hack off the nose and replace it with another one supplied in the kit....but.....are the fun police going to take away my X-Acto if I leave the fuselage as it is?  I think not.  And if any rivet counters have a fit and fall in it, then that's all good, too.  I'd rather build a good looking kit with innacuracies than spend time fixing a mess I've made.  I think I'll leave the nose alone and build it as it came out of the mold.

And yes - from initial inspections, that Hobby Boss Ta152C-1/R14 is really impressive.  I might just build BOTH for this GB!

Cheers, LeeTree

Doogs, tough choices. Just build em all, lol! Interesting A-7. Is that supposed to be whitewash paint on the fuselage? As far as the other birds, I have refs with pics of the real machine's if you're in need of a copy or two. Leemitcheltree, heck yes join in! I'm building Dragon's ta 152 H now and its got awesome detail for its day. Isn't the C boxing alittle tougher to build, don't you have to hack off the nose and fit on a resin one, or am I thinking of the even older Trimaster kit? I've read great things about the Hobbyboss ta 152C, and just ordered one myself.

Nuts!!!  I seem to have offloaded my Eduard Fw190-A5!!  Rats!!  But I've got a Dragon Ta152C-0 and a Hobby Boss Ta152C-1/R14....and I'm rather impressed with both kits - excellent, refined scribing, and if test fits are any indications,  they're both going to be easy builds....at least I can join in!

Cheers, LeeTree

Think I've narrowed down to three schemes and four kits. Oy.

A-7 (Eduard 1/48, Kagero markings)

F-8 (Tamiya 1/48, jacking Eduard markings)

A-8/R2 (Eduard 1/48 or Hasegawa 1/32, Kagero markings)

On the Bench: 1/32 Trumpeter P-47 | 1/32 Hasegawa Bf 109G | 1/144 Eduard MiG-21MF x2

On Deck:  1/350 HMS Dreadnought

I just won $250.00 in my NASCAR Fantasy league so I rewarded myself by ordering True Details resin seats, wheels and cockpit detail for my F-8. Although I was tempted to splurge a bit more  I figured I had best maintain my Kharmic balance and think of others before myself. Being as it is X-mas time and all

Cool, I like the look of the JG 4 bands, (reich defense bands are my masking nemesis). Lots of mottling too on that one. I'm trying to hunt down ref pics of yellow 12, as I have markings for that in the Hase kit and some Aeromaster ones, and they both show some differences in the profiles. Not sure about the yellow undercowl either.

That's a good choice Nathan. Yellow 12 definitely has the color that you were looking for. I'll be going with Friedrich-Karl Franks Yellow 8. I've got a small piece of the aircraft skin that belonged to that plane that was provided in the kit.

Cool. Walter Dahl's blue 13 is pretty sweet. I built his bird last year using the Hasegawa kit. Found some sweet pics of the real machine that made the build even more interesting. Hmmmm, I'm kinda diggin yellow 12 for my Shturmbock....

Yeah, my only problem is I can't decide on a scheme for the A-8 R2. I want something alittle more colorful than what Hasegawa provides. That boxing is hard to find. Most of them on Ebay go for 60-80 bucks (buy now option only), but I found some goin for 28 bucks obo, so I snagged one. Mustang, I'll give you all the particulars as Jan comes around. Hey Jimmy what kit are you leaning towards??

Hey Nathan. Youre bowling right down the alley I'm at.  Just saw the post and figured I would try to help out. One good thing out of many with this Royal Class kit is the choice of ALOT of different schemes to go with. I hope this helps. Without further adue (and there are a few) here they are;
