Joe R, in hindsite I looked at ther reviews and while most were good, there were quite a few claiming deceptive postings and showing pictures other then what was received. But none the less, I need the guns and just have to deal with it,

Reasoned,  The canopy will be closed but the engine compartment will be partially open, and the gun bay will be open. I agree that most do look better "Buttoned up" but This one is going to show some of the works involved.

And again my friends, Many Thanks for the kind words.

PS... I also agree with the Tamiys rattle canned primer... Good stuff, Lately I've used a can of RedDevil enamel grey primer. I ran out of the Tamiya and had it handy, It also does a great job!

Hey Doug I meant to comment earlier on your build and apologize for not doing so. That is a good job on that thing. How big is that rascal anyways?? Paint came out really great  and looks like all the goodies inside are displayed nicely! My kind of build!!

Thanks brother, Lots of fantastic stuff going on here, I really do enjoy seeing all the variations and there are (I think) about 24,000 to consider? Maybe a Trop the next one??? Take care my friend...

You are definitely in Clemens! I'll put you down in the opening post. I'm building this same kit and I have devoloped a love/hate relationship with it. It's a bas**** to build but the results are really a pay off with the kit. If you need any info or help with it while youre building feel free to ask. I will say this: There are two postings at the beginning of the thread : One posted by me on building tips and another one by Benzdoc with pics (although its an Eduard D-9 that Benzdocs is for , the construction tips given work for the A-8 too). Pay attention to these tips because early build requires ALOT of attention and proper fit is down to the 1 mm margin here, if that. Again all of this extra attention gives a GOOD payoff. I do have you covered on the opening post though. Looking forward to seeing you around and seeing your build. Welcome aboard, Joe

..........and yes that is some really cool box art!!

I'm scared a bit.... Wink

I have only built 3 aircraft models untill now:

  • Tamiyas 1:48 Thunderbolt (it's Tamiya, nuff said)
  • Eduards hellcat (still needs some paint and a Quickboost engine, building it was a joy)
  • Eduards Airacobra (WIP in the 1943 GB, and a really troublesome build for me right now, as nothing seems to fit)

I hope this ends well...

I have decided on the machine I will be recreating (or at least I'll try to do it):

Cheers, Clemens

Cool choice Clemens. Sometimes these Eduard kits just need the right tools-

Clemens: Almost forgot to mention that Jester is doing an Eduard D-9 which is almost like an A-8 from the engine firewall back. He's got some great input as well.

Jester: Thanks for reminding me. I almost forgot that youre building an Eduard mount as well.

Clemens - Welcome to the Group Build. It is indeed excellent to have you on board.

Given the current references I am beginning to wonder exactly who is indeed sane here. Those building an Eduard 1/48 190 or those building a simple 1/72 Fw 190. I know that I'm not hovering over my build with a hammer or an AR. Just sayin'.Big Smile

Don't worry too much Clemens. You came to the right place! All of us here take care of each other, especially newcomers! I came to the forum last year and my skills improved GREATLY because I was in a group build. You'll learn stuff here you wont get in a book or magazine. Looking forward to having you as a part of our build, Joe

Thank you all, guys.

I thought about that solution too (at least for a moment) on my Airacobra, Nathan. But luckily there are so many nice people here on the forum that kept telling me it's not as bad as I say it to be... and now she even haas her wings on!

I think I will have a lot of fun here, but I have to finish some things before:

  • Finish that damn Cobra
  • Build a German P-47 for the "Force of Nature" GB
  • The big hasegawa "Jug" with Markings of "Eight Nifties" (Ground Attack GB)

I will start to work on the butcher bird, when I start "Eight Nifties".

Hey Clemens, I too am have "Eight Nifties" that I'm doing on a Tamiya 1/48 Jug. I started it for the "Big Beautiful Jugs" GB but I messed up the NMF Alclad finish on a section of my fuselage. It will require a full paint stripping and repainting. Thus, I have set it aside, at least until I finish my build here.

I too want to echo the sentiment that you have definitely come to the right place to not only enhance your modeling but, to have a lot of fun with it. Every person on here is awesome when it comes to assisting you. My modeling improved immensely when I joined.

You are in here too , Joe?

I haven't seen that at all! I actually git the Idea for eaght nifties from yor build!

So a big "thank you" to you!

That with the NMF on your jug is a pity. I hope you can sort that out as I'd love to see it finished somewhere in the future.

Ok folks. Started installing the exhaust pipes onto the engine. This is proving to be a slow process given the fact that there are photo etch exhaust "rings" at the outlets of each exhaust pipe (yes there are 14 of these!!!). I'm making progress at 1-2 pipes per day. Just tricky to get them into the right postion and glued securely to each cylinder. I will say that the exhaust pipe template that Eduard provided is a saviour here!! It's a bit slow folks but after the pipes are in place and some weathering with black ground up pastel applied I'll post some pics.

Why, Indeed I am Clemens. It is my pleasure to have inspired you. That honestly not only makes my birthday today but, also gives me some inspiration in return to finish her up. I am looking forward to seeing yours that's for sure.

Joe - Knowing you and the patience you have for detail I can be assured of a stellar job on your exhaust pipes.

Any tipps on aftermarket goodies for the Hasegwa "Jug"?

I ordered some gun barrels, PE, an engine and wheels for it, but there is still time to order some stuff (the guys at my local store wont order it all till 1st of march anyway)

Joe: Don't expect too much from me... it will be my 2nd Alclad paint session though. 1st one was the Tamiya P-47, which i think didn't turn out that bad, but it's no shiny-shiny at all (note to myself: matte primer makes Alclad paints really dull), but i think the finish i achieved fits the Thundebolt. I can post some pics, when I made all the touch-ups to make it look presentable... Be aware it was only my 1st plane model and my 3rd plastic model at all.

Cheers, Clemens

Welcome Clemens!...

Over the years, I have literally built hundreds of kits of just about any scale, concept and material, I always drift back to my Luftwaffe in the end, Its only been the last 8 to 10 years though that I have REALLY enjoyed. The differance was researching the subject and making them as real as I can with my woefully lacking skills. Most of my building goodies and such (including kits), if not available locally are from Ebay or other "E"sites. Cant wait to see your pictures... I'm sure they will amaze! By the way, the only NMF I did was using metal adhesive foil. I think it looked great and a tad easier then Alclad paints, although they do an excellent job! Welcome again, and looking forward to your submissions... Take Care!

Thanks for the vote of confidence on the pipes. Those are really trying me as 1-2 a day is not what I really want but I guess I'll have to take what I can get.

Ok, I lied about my last update being my last update before my last update....I think??Tongue Tied

I can honestly say that this is probably the best GB that I have ever participated in. Lots of friendly folks and great advice. And people are STILL signing up for it!!

Anywho, looks like the sacrifice appeased the gods and I was able to get about an hour in at the bench. Got quite a bit done though to be honest. Went ahead and attached the drop tank. Painted the exhaust and added the staining. Added the pitot and the antennas on the belly of this beast. Also painted up the wheels and tires and tried to simulate the red tape slip indicator(?). I did run into a problem with the toe in on the wheels though .I guess I wasn't paying attention when attaching the struts due to the really weak attachment points provided and trying to maintain the proper angles and I ended up with quite a bit of toe in. I ever so gently heated the struts with a hair dryer and gently applied some twist to get them straight. So this is where she sits as of now. Just have the canopy work to do and the attachment of the aerial wire which I am not looking forward to on this one since it is relaxed.

Some shots of the wiring and lines in the gear bays and struts:

Somewhat decent shot of the interior:

And the outside:

And that is that for now!!

Clemens - The only thing had other than what you have is an Ultracast seat. They are really nice. I have the Quickboost engine but, it is so nicely detailed I opted to save that for a future open cowling Jug.

Eric -  Hoochie Mama, You've got it going on there on that D. Absolutely gorgeous build especially the wheel well, landing gear and the wheels. I mean you have done some top notch work there. I am really taken by your wheels Eric. What exactly did you use/do to get that marvelous effect.

Choot, you guys are way to kind!!Embarrassed

I really appreciate the kind words from everybody!!

Joe Rix- On the wheels, I normally paint the tire color then paint the hub color but since this kit came with masks I did the opposite. I "primed" the wheels with a gloss black then once that was dry, I applied the wheel masks and shot the rubber using Tamiya NATO Black. Then I cut out some tine rectangles to represent the slip stickers/paint whatever they were, and painted them red.

I had to use the flash on my phone to get the smaller details as I just dont have enough light over my bench. Because of that , a lot of the details/wash/colors look pretty harsh in those pictures with it.

OK. I'm jumpin in! Fresh, still in the box, Hasegawa 1/32 scale Fw190 (A6 - A8? - still to be determined).

Fw190 in box photo Fw190GB001_zpsaf221942.jpg

The kit is from the late '80s and was given to me by my neighbor just yesterday to build for him, as his arthritis prevents manipulating small parts. He's giving me a Revell 1/32 scale Me109 for my troubles so ....

Good thing this ain't a competition or I would quit before starting, after seeing some of the work already done here. Nice job guys.

Bill.

On the bench:  Lindberg 1/32 scale 1934 Ford Coupe and a few rescue projects.

In queue:  Tamiya 1/35 Quad Tractor or a scratch build project.

Holy Cow Bill, I have that kit that I bought back in. well, the 80's. I even considered for a moment building it for this GB. I'm really interested how you do with it. I know that it has raised panel lines. Are you going to attempt rescribing it? Really glad to have you joining in with us. I'll gaurantee you'll have fun.
