Jim: Nice work on the interior there. And food colouring? I've sprayed stuff like that with Tamiya clear paint but like what you've got there better.

Well, I got side-tracked again!

I finally got time to sit down and work on the Cobra, but then I got a bit curious about a Italeri Huey kit I've had on the shelf forever. Test fitting a few parts so I could size it up to the Cobra, and before I knew it....

The big problem though, is that I followed the kit instructions before checking actual references. That "Pale Green" is wrong - the back wall should be grey, and those pilot seats would be closer to medium green.

Further research has this Italeri as the exact same kit as Tamiya, comparing the two on Hobby Search Japan. Their version calls for their XF-5 flat green.

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10001548z/70/1

How did test fitting a few parts get so complicated?

Jim

Hi Jim,

The colors look close enough to me.  And you did a fantastic job of painting them!  Yes  Yes  Very clean.

Ken

I did decide to change it up to Testors medium field green:

The seat belts I went for Green Drab.

Cockpit:

The console was painted semi-flat black, then dry brushed with silver. I hit a couple of knobs with red paint drops. You can't see due to the shadow, but the instrument panel is just gray with drops of gloss black paint on the dials. Hard to do much detailing at this scale without making a mess.... even if I could see it!

Future tinted dip with green food coloring to color the windows above the pilots.

Probably no work tonight on the hobby as I just came down off the roof! Temps today were nearly 90 degrees and it was unbearable in the house! Time to work on the swamp cooler! 2 trips to the hardware store and it's still not done! But at least I got some air going through the house and I might just be able to sleep tonight!

I also now find that the screen in my bedroom needs to be repaired and of course another trip to the hardware store! I'm taping it closed for tonight as there are already plenty of skeeters out and I don't want visitors tonight!

Jim

Wow Jim!  I still can't get over how you can do such great detail work at your scale!  The interior looks awesome.  And great job tinting the roof glass!  It turned out great!  Yes  Yes

I've actually began to make some real progress here, they're getting close to done...

I found this part somehow I left off the Wildcat's landing gear- well it's a tool box part now. There's no way I'm ripping all that off to fit the part back up in there...

Now I'm looking at the Trumpy kit of the F8F Bearcat to complete the WW2 'Cat' family! (Already have an AMT Tigercat around somewhere).

Nice job on the cats!

I know what you mean as far as the forgotten part! I have been there! I had to reason with myself and say, "well nobody will ever know except for me!" But still I know!

Good you could find the time, but as for myself, I cant seem to catch a break here! I have been messing with the evaporative cooler for now going on a week! Replacing parts, pads, repairing a number of leaks, etc.! The thing is very old and should by all rights be replaced! However, it would cost nearly a grand for me to do it myself, plus the time and labor to do it, hauling the old one off and not to mention getting the new unit up there!

Plus there are all the mundane chores: the yard, the laundry, etc.!

I hope I can set aside some time this evening to work on the 'Huey'!

I also forgot to mention the other fun I had with the cooler!

I removed the covers to it Tuesday evening, both inside and out, and when I got up Wed morning, I was greeted by yellow jackets flying all over the house! Seems they had gotten into a small opening in the bottom and built a nest! I was late to work as I waged a war on them and then managed to spray their nest with some killer! I still found a few of them when I got home from work!

Now I don't have the allergic reaction that Ken has to them, none the less, the last time I tangled with them, I received 3 very painful stings and afterwards experienced flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, nausea, etc. The sting on my leg developed into a sore that took months to heal, and I still have a scar!!  Needless to say, I have a little bit of fear of those little b*stards! Hate them!

Jim: Thanks, feels good to get something near to being off the bench.

Hope things work out with the condenser, sounds like enough work and expense without the yellow jackets- never had that kind of health issues from being stung but still I hate the friggin' things.

Good progress on the chopper Jim. I did a Huey a while back and painted the rear interior a grey and red. That's what the directions called for though they may not have been accurate they looked cool that way so I left them as is. Your's looks quite realistic and as Ken and others mentioned the detail is great!

My weekend was a wash as far as getting anything done on the 109 as I had to work on Sat. and Sun. was yard work. By the time I finished with the outdoor stuff I was too tired and sweaty to do anything more than shower and drink a couple beers. Made myself some tacos for dinner and took the dog for a walk. Now it's bedtime so hopefully this week I can get back to my airplane!

Hi Cliff,

Your "Cats" are looking great!  Nice work!  Yes  Yes  Bummer about that part coming off.  But unless someone is actually an expert it will probably never be noticed.

We look forward to seeing the other members of the "Cat" family!  They sound like a fun build!

Thanks Ken, actually the part didn't fall off, I never cemented it in. I found it sitting there all cleaned up and ready to go lying in the corner of the kit box. Oh well, as you said, I doubt anyone but a true Wildcat fanatic would notice.

I said I wouldn't start on anything new but like Jim I'm getting tempted. I pulled out a Monogram/Accurate Miniatures Helldiver and started some work on it. No GB for this one since it's a bit of a mess of a kit and I'm not sure how far I'll get or if it ends up shoved back in the box and put away.

Jim: Too bad we don't have our psychotic Jack Russell, he used to eat yellow jackets and wasps. I'd think they'd sting the tender insides of his mouth but he's grab them out of the air and chomp them down. I think all Jack Russells are insane but he was just plain nuts.

I have a friend with a Blue Heeler that does the same. I think that dog is just wack anyway. It also attacks the television every time there is an animal on. Doesn't matter if it's a mouse or a African elephant. The friend had to move the TV up high.

Hi Mike,

Yes working Saturday really takes a toll on a person.  Everyone needs at least a two day weekend, especially if you have a yard to take care of.  I hope it doesn't become too much of a routine for you.

Ken

Not having those days off does take its toll as Ken said. It gets so much worse when summer hits and there is so much to do. Don't take me wrong, I actually enjoy and have a certain amount of pride in keeping up the appearance of my home. I'm not one to sit in front the tele for hours on end- I have to keep busy. That's why I don't watch much of the tube. I feel like I should be doing something, not just sitting there. Last night I sat down to work on the Huey and gave up after I found myself hunched in my chair, sound asleep! Hard to make any progress! I'm trying to get the glazing cemented in so I can button up the two halves. Most goes in from the inside anyway. Jim

Ahhhh! I swear the stupidest crap happens to me! I went to the hobby room, actually a spare bedroom, to do some work! I visited the bathroom and when I came out, I saw the closet door was partially open. I went to push it shut, but there was something blocking it. I gave it another shove and jarred loose a metal framed picture I had on the door! It fell, hitting my hand and opened a small gash in the back of my hand! It was a little deep, but I was able to close it with a butterfly bandage!

Stupid, stupid, stupid!

Now I am wounded in the hobby room! I thought this was a safe hobby!

Holy cow Jim, your luck seems to be all bad recently; at least the models looking good! As far as those yellow jackets; they're born mean and just get more so. I don't mind bees too much as they usually don't bother you if you don't bother them but wasps and jackets seem to always be looking for a fight. I slaughter them wherever I find them!

Ken, you're so right about needing more than one day off. This weekend I'm going to get my 2 days regardless of the work load; someone else can ruin their weekend not me! I did get the interior of my plane painted RLM 66 this evening and should be able to start putting on the photo etch stuff before work tomorrow. At least I'm making some progress. Well, time for a cup of herbal tea and then some shut eye.

Jim: Ouch, I have to agree with Mike, did you let a black cat cross your path or something??? All joking aside hope you feel better!

Mike: Hope you get your day off, relaxing is the last term I'd use for PE!

Hi guys!

I've been out of action for a considerable amount of time......it looks like the builds are coming along nicely.  Great work all the way around.  I made the 'mistake' of taking four college classes this spring and needless to say, it was a lot more than I bargained for!!  Luckily, I passed my classes with flying colors and won't be going back until this fall.

So, with that in mind, I would love to rejoin the group and commit to building a Monogram A-1 Skyraider in Vietnam War colors.....what do you think, Ken????

Thanks,

Dave

Good to hear everything is going well for you Dave, and congrats on doing so well in your classes. The Skyraider is cool, I've been playing a wargame set in the Pacific that includes the invasion of Japan (Operation Downfall) and in 1946 you get to upgrade to stuff that missed the war like the Douglas Destroyer and Martin Mauler- seems the Skyraider was the only one out of that batch that wasn't sorta a dud. Yesterday I took the Imperial Palace with Marines backed up by T29 heavy tanks and ended the war, interesting stuff there.

Well, slowly the hand is healing, though it is still sore! The cuts are closed up ok, but the picture that attacked me was fairly heavy and there was bruising as well!

Seems a lot of us are finding it hard to be able to sit down ans work at the bench, esp. with summer being here and all that. My weekends have been all about trimming overgrown trees and multiple trips to the city recycle center to drop the cut branches off. Then there is still the usual yard work, house work, work work, etc. etc. Then getting out for walks and bike rides...

Even weeknights I find projects, like tonight I sat down with my .22 caliber 'plinker', doing a thorough cleaning and replacing a couple of parts inside that just arrived today! Watch out tin cans! I'm ready for ya!

I did sit down here and there at the bench and got some work done on the 'Huey'! As you can see, some parts of it have been pre-painted. The windows on top have been covered with parafilm for now. The wind shield and top are not cemented yet.

One thing I'm trying to do is paint those wipers. Hand painting just made a mess, so I experimented with actually masking and spraying them! I only did the blades for nor to see if it would work. The center pillar gets painted and I will also paint the edges of the clear part so you wont see that annoying edge through the glass.

Hi Jim,

Glad to hear that your hand is on the mend.  I know what you mean about outside chores.  I have been kept busy with that myself.  It looks like it will not be until winter before I will see my workbench again.

Great work on your Huey!  Yes  Yes  I always have to remind myself when I look at your pictures that this is 1/72 scale.

Hey Jim the chopper looks terrific! I've gotten to always masking and spraying canopies, I can't get a straight line otherwise to save my own life. Good to hear your hand is on the mend too.

I've been inside more though in the A/C- it got up to 94 degrees yesterday. I mowed part of the lawn and that was it for me!

BTW: The game is Order of Battle: Pacific and it's a 'beer and pretzels' type wargame- not too complicated. Seems I don't have the patience I used to have back when I was younger.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the big welcome back!! I have truly missed the comradeship found here in the forums!

Ken- my model is the Monogram A-1H Skyraider in 1/48th scale.  It will be mostly out of the box and in Special Operations Wing SEA camo from Vietnam.  I have some ancient decals that i hope will work.  I'll also be building an Esci A-1H in South Vietnamese colors at the same time....that kit is pretty rough and has been a bit of a challenge.Ken, this will also be a crossover to the Vietnam USAF build.

Gamera - I hear you on the video/computer games.  My personal addiction is Xbox Live's "World of Tanks,"  also a great beer and pretzels game.

Jim - Great work on the Huey; is that the Monogram kit?  If it is, my hats off to you!  Had to take a stab at improving my 'marketability' by getting in a few college classes before my GI Bill expires or gets taken away by budget cuts.  Hope to eventually be a history teacher somewhere and get away from the law enforcement field all together.  I'm getting too old to be wrestling guys half my age, or younger!  They keep getting younger and more dangerous, and I just get older and more beat up!  But for now, I'm holding my own......

Thanks for the encouragement, fellas.  It's greatly appreciated.  I'll try and get some progress pictures up soon....

Dave

Hi Dave,

The front page roster has been updated.  Again, welcome back!

Wow, I could not imagine having to take on some young gangsters at my age.  It would be either shoot them or taz them.  Kudos to you for doing what you do!

Dave, it is actually an Italeri kit, though I have seen it boxed as a Tamiya kit as well. Hard to say the origin of the kit. I've had it for probably 20 years.

It's all about classic cars now!

Why can't I find the "Any" key on my keyboard?
