Adding some interior details to the nonexistant interior. I had to remove 'REVELL 1981' and the molded part numbers first.  I will base my interior on photos of a 1/32 scale D.H. 2.

Sorry John/Jeaton, looks like I missed your post yesterday. Really like how she's coming. Weird the company messed up the door so badly but the replacement work is coming along really well.

Guess I put everyone to sleep with the last post!

Model Master Wood overcoated with Tamiya Clear Yellow, then MM RAF Interior Green.

I found some moldable lead clay type stuff in my weight bin after I had made the silicone mold so I used that, pressed in under the cargo floor and the cockpit floor.  About an ounce went in, more than the .7 ounces the instructions called for.  I used Peewit masks on the canopy, and they fit very well and are made of Tamiya type tape material.  I made substitutes for the 4 panels in front, making them into the 8 panes shown in most pictures.

A little work has been done on the Italeri 1/72 Horsa.  I have a spare kit that I picked up somewhere that someone had started.  The wings were poorly joined and they may have given up at that point.  In any event, the carpet monster, if not doomed, at least has suffered a major setback.  It also allowed me to take a different approach on the cargo door.  Italeri's plan was to cut out the door, and they supplied separate parts to make up the door.  The parts didn't look like what the door looks like in pictures, and I didn't see how you could load wheeled vehicles through the side door when there was a big gap in the ramp where the door was.  Also, I believe the door was inset, and slid sideways to open.  The steps Italeri supplied did not appear in any photos, not even in the rear door.  All the photos show ladders being used when the door was open, and the doors are never visible when they are open.  To make something that looked plausible, I made up a removable section of ramp surface that fits over the door opening to be used when cargo is being loaded or unloaded.  There may well be steps on the back of the door in the ramp, but it will not be visible on my model.  I used parts from the started kit to make the cargo door and the needed ramp parts, you can tell what they are by the dark plastic.  I capped the ends of the new cargo door with plastic card.  As I saw in some photos, the man door in the cargo ramp is not flush with the outside surface, but inset a little, so it can slide. I sure hope I interpreted all those photos correctly.  I actually did, after several hours, find a photo of the ramp with the door section covered by a section of ramp.

Before I worked on the cargo door I assembled the wings, which was a lot like working with vacuform parts.  I matched up the upper surfaces as well as possible, then tacked them in spots with CA on the inside surface.  When the alignment looked good I applied a heavy pass of CA over the entire inside joint.  Next the lower wing parts were attached.  Because of the angle of the join, there was still some filling to do so the upper join areas were taped off and a thick layer of Mr. Surfacer 1200 was sprayed on.  That was left to cure for a day and then sanded smooth.

I next went to the fuselage parts and cleaned up a few sink marks with CA, then joined the left tail to the left main fuselage and the same for the right side.  This gave me the opportunity avoid misalignments at the join.  I cut off the alignment pins so I could lay the sides on a glass plate to insure good alignment.

With the fuselage halves together the two floor sections which were previously joined were set in, and then tack glued to the right fuselage half where I could reach it in front.  That insured the floor was level, as there were just some faint lines in the plastic where it might attach.  The right front seat was installed, then the halves were separated and the floor was glued down the right side.  The rear bulkhead was next installed in the right fuselage and the fit was checked.  In order to get the fuselage to come together in that area a generous amount was removed from the right edge of the bulkhead, there is no penalty there because there is a ring bulkhead in the fuselage that covers any gap and you will need your borescope to see it anyway.   You do have one, don't you, a borescope?  As you can see, the seats were then installed.

The last photo shows the beginnings of making some weights to fit under the forward section of the floor.  Plastic wrap is pressed in to cover the plastic and Epoxy Sculpt has been formed into the cavity.  Once it cures the resulting shape will have silicone mold material poured over it and in that mold lead will be melted.

Ziggy: Wow those replacement guns are a 100% improvement!

The kit guns, well they sorta remind me of balloon animals. Like some sort of inflatable weapon!

BTW: I have gotten some work done on the Comet, not really enough for a photo though. I wish I hadn't bought the PE since now I feel duty bound to use the stuff, and things are going slowly with it. Check the kit instruction sheet, look at the PE instruction sheet, make sure they don't conflict and then add the part- it's slow as blazes...

It look like some great models have been started, can't wait to see more posts.

I have received the engine and machine guns.

I got four of these for $16 plus S/H, that's 8 guns and 32 magazines!

The engine has sparkplugs, pushrods and rocker arms!

These are the kit parts.

Here's the gun comparison.

And here's the size.

Chad: She looks fantastic! Looks like you've got some pre-shading there- I really like the results!

Only issue is the side mirrors. Personally I think I'd leave them off till the end. If you can get the thing build and painted without knocking them off and losing them you're a better man (or orangutan) than I... Embarrassed

With fingers crossed I'll not break those mirrors! Angel

Keavdog: Ohhhhhhh cool!

Bish: Nice work! Love the ability to insert the clear parts later, it can be a real pain to try to mask them and still get those PE screens painted.

Est. 1961: Looks good, shame you won't be able to see that nicely detailed engine.

Nice start Bish, I've made a start on the scammell. Sub assemblies building up, the engine won't be visible unless the breakdown truck breaks down ideas flowing might follow your fine examples and set a scene to that end

OOP's, i seem to have forgotten somthing, the figure. Modern British army figures are pretty thin on the ground and seem to mainly aimed at Iraq and Afghanistan. Accurate Armour does have a range of 80's and 90's figures but i only found one which would fit N Ireland. Its not completly accurate as it seems to have body armour over the jacket when it should be underneath and is missing the ceramic plates on the front and back that covered the vital organs. But it does have the correct chect rig and an SA 80 so its close enough. Not the best resin figures i have seen but not to bad. The right arm is not a good fit, the puches are molded to allow for the rifle which is nice but the arm does not fit to the shoulder, so needed some filling at the back. The muzzle on the SA 80 has come off but i managed to save it and will attach later.

Look forward to seeing this John. I have just had a look and they do one in 72nd with UK markings, going to have to get one of those.

The Snatch is coming on slowly but its now ready to get some primer on. I am doing all of the inside before putting it all togther and then i will paint the outside. Its a pity there is no equipment to go on the inside. The mounting plate behind the front seats should hold ECM equipment (not a radio as the instructions say). I might try and scratch build something as the type of equipment that fitted there was just a metal box with a couple of switches.

The mesh over the rear lights is rather nice. It is attached to the plate that glues to the vehicle and can be folded to shape but left open so the lights can be added later. No need for masking.

I have fitted the mesh on the side doors, the glass goes in from the inside and can be fitted later.

And the same goes for the front wingscreen, the mesh is movable which is handy.

Now time to prime and try and mix up some paint to get the right shade of green.

Chad,

That Saladin is looking good!  I had the old Tamiya kit, and it did NOT rate well, even back in 1980!

Funny you should mention a 1/6 scale Sherman - if DML did a Firefly VC...

You know G, I just saw somewhere online that Dragon just released a 1/6 Sherman. I think you need to buy that to go with all those weapons!

Chad,

I think maybe DML made these for their 1/6 military figures, and just decided to sell them as assembly kits.  The moldings are rougher than their nice AFV kits, so even though they use slide molds on the parts, a lot of cleanup is needed.

Here is the Enfield rifle that came with the set.  I figured what the heck, just build the thing.

It comes with two magazines and a bunch of exposed clips for some reason.  Anyway, these kits are pretty simple, so I will try to get them done and finally have a GB completion under my belt.
