Here is another progress pic for you.  I'm almost ready to paint.  I'm letting all the little bits and bobs dry proper, give it a seam check and then paint.  So far it's been a great little kit!

Turns out I had a metal barrel for this as well!  Should save a little bit of time.  Those indie links.....

Here is the first installment of pics.  I'm one who jumps all over the instructions and does as many sub assemblies as I can.  LOL!  Of course...there I was spending time on the cockpit and when I went to dry fit the canopy...I asked myself why am I doing this!?  LOL!  You can't see a bloody thing when the canopy is down.  LOL!  So far, it's a very nice kit.  Some flash but nothing bad.  Fit has been nice so far too.  I'm still up in the air with gear down or up.  More to come on that.  LOL!  Here they are.

The Airfix Crusader has its coat of paint, and a coat of Future ready for decals. I've dome some colour modulation to give it some depth.

The decals are holding me up. they're past their use by date, to put it nicely. Completely inflexible and they've lost any adhesion to the model. I've tried to make them stick by locating them in some wet Future onm the model. Now I'm trying to make them conform with some Microsol. I need to get the wash done and highlights tonight at least.

Okay, I started at 8:00pm tonight and put in about 4 hours.  Now I'm trying to remember how to use my Flickr account.  Lol!  Lets give it a shot.

Great, it works.  Here is where I am at after 4 hours.  A lot of flash on this one and some bad mold seams espcially on the gun barrels.  MIght have to dig into my spares box and see what I have to replace them with.  It is off to bed time now.

Ok, it's 12 and a half hours in, and despite an hourlong nap after eating too much, I have so far been able to get this thing ready for primer. The leading edges of the wings gave me more trouble than I was expecting, but I used thin super glue to fill the cracks as well as add strength, hit it with accelerator, and got them sanded smooth. I may have seated the cockpit too high, as th seat interfered with the rear glass, but I trimmed about half a milimeter off the top of the seat, and everything went down well.

Other things I've gotten done:

Wheels are painted (one of the reasons I chose this kit was the fact that the tires are separate pieces, so it negated the need to mask them).

Another reason I chose this kit is the fuselage top is a separate piece, so there is no upper centerline seam to deal with.

I got the exhaust pipes drilled out, painted Alclad Steel, then washed in AK rust streaks. I'll probably rub a pencil over them to bring back some of the metallic colors, then blacken the tips.

The landing gear legs are painted, and the struts attached to them, so tomorrow they should be a pretty easy drop fit. I'll probably use super glue on them.

I also painted the prop, and hit the hub cannon with a quick touch of gunmetal. I primered the spinner, and since I primed in black and it has to be black, I'll be able to mask the cannon pretty easily with a small roll of tape without worrying that I won't cover the spinner with paint.

All in all, I'm happy with the progress so far and am looking forward to getting primer down on the whole thing tonight before bed. Hopefullt that doesn't reveal any issues.

You're a brave man doing indy link tracks in a weekend build! Looks like a good start.

Thanks, Lewbud. I'm using MRP for most of it. I used US Neutral Gray for the interior, and am going to use MRP for the underside and the green up top. For the black, I think I am going to go with Tamiya NATO Black.

And wheels done I'm going to paint the suspension first. The tracks are mostly single links. Wish me luck not losing any while I feaverishly stick them together...after painting the sand.

Here is the completion of construction. Onwards with the paint job. A few things have come up so its been hard to find time. Lets see how we go.

Tax, DWS, thanks for the info on the 00 scale!  I kinda thought it might scale out to 1/76 scale since the Crusader looks pretty close to 1/72!  BTW, the little tank is looking good so far, Tax!

So, aside from not knowing exactly when my 48 hours will begin, I have narrowed it down to two kits.  Not sure which one, maybe both?  lol

 

 

Sorry my wife tells me this morning, that she is working Saturday, and since I am working tomorrow, I am shooting for a Saturday start, and a sunday finish....

I am really leaning towards the Wildcat as my Kit!  We shall see where the muses point to me on Saturday morning!

Now on to the interior.  It's basic but I'll try to do something with it.  The real car is pretty stripped down so not a lot of detail in there.  I'll figure something out while waiting for the clearcoat to dry enough for decals.

Ok, here it goes. I started at 11:30 a.m. today with the 1/48 Accurate Miniatures Yak-1 flown by Lilia Litvyak, one of the female Soviet pilots who flew over Stalingrad.

Proof of unstarted-ness.

By 1:48, I had gotten major parts on the subassemblies done, primered with Mr. Surfacer 1500 Black and then painted with MRP Neutral Grey.

By 3:10, I had much of the cockpit details painted, clear coated with X-22 and then applied Tamiya Panel Liner Dark Gray. I robbed my Eduard Spitfire of its Sutton harness to replace the kit decal.

At this point, I have the wings together, as well as most of the fuselage. I sanded the turtledeck seam, and will paint it neutral gray before I install the top portion. I have sprue goo drying in the leading edge seams of the wing as well as along the underside of the ventral scoop. It'll take a while for that to dry, so I'm going to flat coat the cockpit and dirty it up a bit with some oils before slipping it into the fuselage.

My goal for the day is to have the assembly ready for paint by the time I go to bed tonight.

Not to get off topic here but I've always been confused by airfix's 00 scale so I finally looked it up.  00 scale is the equivalent of 1/76 scale (1/76.2 to be exact).  I always thought it was the same as H0 scale which is 1/87 scale but it is not.  Both are common with train hobbiest but the 00 scale is only common in the UK whereas H0 scale is common in the USA and elsewhere.

I hope to start my build tonight after I make supper.  I've decided to go with my Hasegawa 1/72 Japanese Raiden Jack.  Very low parts count and two tone paint job.  What could go wrong.

OO Scale is actually OO Gauge, used for model trains. THese days Airfix sell these same kits as 1/76, the same scale as the tanks sold by Matchbox and Fujimi. I think everyone else went for 1/72 with their small scale tanks. I've doing a project to build the Airfix tanks that I built as a kid againm this is one of them. Anyway, this was the status at the close of play on the first day.

We're off to an auspicious start guys!  Got the front page updated with your builds.

My build will start tomorrow morning...or I could jump the gun and start tonight!!

I'm in this year. Last year's 1/144 entry probably has me overconfident. Stepping up and doubling my offering with another Sukhoi. This year I will do at least...Zvezda's 1/72 Su-50

Well, three hours in and not a lot to report yet.  Body is in paint and engine is more or less together.  Gonna get some sleep while the body sets up and engine dries.  Will post some pics. tomorrow.

Good luck with that tank.  Looks like we are the only ones started so far.

That's an impressive choice Tim, it takes me ages to build one of those things. Good luck.
