Ok, one thing I have not found a lot of confusion and dissertation on is the color of the P-26's at Pearl the day it was attacked. In fact there is a veritable vacuum of info out there. I only found the one shot in the P-26 in action book.

Here are some kinda early sneak peaks at progress on the P-26. The aldclad is done, actually I found the perfect primer for it. On the top was Krylon gloss black, on the bottom is MM Gloss black covered with future. On the top I had trouble with "Spotting" some areas appeared to cover well, while others you could see the black through it and it took a few passes to cover it up. Underneath???? swipe swipe swipe and it was done!!! it went on beautiful! Also I learned the Badger 175 I have worked 100% better for it than both the 155 and Iwata HP-CR. I'll have to get a bottom shot in a little while so you can see, I forgot.

The cowl is still flat, I will gloss it before I stick it on permanently (it is just stck on there for now) I need to clean some overspray off and do some light sanding on a seam first.

Without further ado:

Next is the dreaded task of putting the fiddly bits on and then the bracing. (which is going to be a whole new game for me!)

Thanks Richard - After looing at the pics I saw what appeared to be white dust on the body which really turned out to be pigment particles that buffed off with a paper towel, it has a lot more shine now and no "dust" on it...

I'll try to get everything done but the bracing done this afternoon as I have relatives coming in from New Orleans escaping the hurricane and I think my modeling is going to be cut short for a few days.

Thanks Joe - it is a learning experience, my last Alclad model I trashed because I bungled up some parts moving it around... it is a pain hulk now.

here's one after a little buffing of the loose pigment off:

Well-- finally some progress....

Seeing as this is my first build with rigging and I am unsure how to go about it-- I am trying this method-- the Academy kit has openings in the fuselage and wings for the rigging-- so I knotted it from behind and super-glued it on the inside...I attached the top wing halves-- and will knot them from underneath before I add the bottom halves. Again-- probably not the best way or easiest way-- but I am new at this and have no idea ;) My wife thinks it looks like it as whiskers.....

After the rigging and a little seam cleanup-- I will slap on the OD and Neutral Gray...

Bottom rigging looks to be a bit of a bear...but at least the canopy is small with little masking ;)

Jules, it was an enforced absence through a work trip and a heavy weekend. However, I am in a similar bucket to you at the moment, no bench time. I'm struggling through the flu and am too tired to do much of anything when I get home from work.

Mike nice looking job so far on the P-26, oh and your wife is right, it does look like it has whiskers.

Cheers

looks good Mike! That's one of the ways I was thinking of rigging it. Since mine is in 1/32 I decided to go with the .10 styrene strips instead... All I have left is decaling and some fiddly bits before I screw that up start that... Wink [;)]

Jules - thanks! I got a little earlier of a break than I anticipated... they found out they could make it back into thier neighborhood to get their valuables and such today so they took off so they could do that. I expect it will be Monday before they make it back... so right now the future is drying on my P-26 as we speak, I need to decal it before I continue on with the rigging so I hope to have some pics of it decalled up tonight!!!

ok here is one sucky pic... I am futuring the topside and adding one coat of alclad to it after the brilliant success on the lower fuselage... then will come decals. the odd hazing is the future drying. I cut the future 3:1 future to thinner with Tamiya thinner and although it dries a bit odd it goes on so SMOOTH like that... (experimenting a lot with this one)

---edit---
what I mean by odd is the future hazes then turns bronze-ish clear... then the area I sprayed slowly shrank to the size of the spot you see on the wing and eventually totally disappeared. I don't think I will ever spray future straight again... it is like glass in some areas...

----edit 2----

oh yeah... that is a sh... a shhhhi... a ship behind the P-26... yes I have a dark evil side none of you knew about... it is the Revell DE S-100 Schnellboot and the first model I built on coming back into the hobby... so I have kept it...

ok some more pics... I let the future cure since yesterday and shot a final coat of alclad on today and it really did make a difference on the top. I want to get another one of these and do it over with the future primer. Also the kit decals had to be wrestled from the paper as I suspect the decals were in a humid place before and rather tightly adhered to the paper...

here's some picks with the decals settling down witht he Microset and the alclad over the future on top... there are some rough spots but those are showing through the future from the black krylon primer I used before... I futured it as smooth as possible without losing all surface detail and reshot it with the alclad. Then just decaled on top of the alclad...

Next: fiddly bits and the dreaded rigging/bracing...

I tried dybushing the IP on my Kate yesterday to less than satisfactory results, don't get me wrong it looked OK, but it wasn't as sharp as I'd hoped for. Tonight I'm going to respray the IP back to black and use the kit supplied transparent decal.

Tom I agree with you when it comes to decals and the IP, depending on their quality I am using them more and more.
Oh and really nice job so far on the Peashooter, it looks great. One question, why did you decide to try out thinned Future?

Thad your instrument panel looks just great, nice job.

Jules, you can also cut Future with Windex, which also gives a great result.

Cheers

Darren - With my HP-CR I started getting the rough texture in some areas from the future drying before it hit the body... thought the Tamiya thinner with the retarder would help it out and it did!!! not only that but it also let it sit down a lot smoother with less coats! I'm sold!!!

Tom It's looking better and betterThumbs Up [tup]Oh and i agree with you and Darren about using the decal for certain IP's, I noticed that the Has decal for the IP was 4 decals so i decided to give it a go and it looks better than any paint job i could give it, the most important thing IMO was to get them on precisly in the right spot so when i hit it with softener the dials sank into the rasied detail..........

Thad your IP is looking sweetThumbs Up [tup] but man what a freaky pic, the IP looks like its levitating in mid air..........

Jules, the Ip is glued to a tooth pick so I have something to hold on to while working on it. For the pic. I stuck it in to a block of foam and I zoomed in as close as I could to get a clear shot of it.
