Tom, I test assembled the metal barrel with the mantlet, breech etc the other week, to see how it went together. In the Tamiya kit, the gun pivots in the vertical on a nut and bolt, you just tighten the nut up to hold the gun in whatever position desired. Therefore the extra weight of the metal gun barrel can be counter acted by tightening up the nut a little more.

Your counter weight idea looks like the best way to go. Could you put a weight on a piece of stiff wire, so that it hangs below the breech, and therefore out of sight? Maybe angled forward into the front hull, and painted to blend in with the interior.

No progress update!!!

Spent most of the day putting up the Xmas tree. The 1st stand I used exploded after I'd tightened up the bolts. Sounded like a gun going off! Luckily the tree stayed up, but I still had to remove all the dec's and go and get another tree stand.

Did manage to pick up Max Hasting's  'Armageddon' , which covers the battle for Germany. How appropriate, and a good read for Xmas.

Karl - yeah I think that is the best way to go... maybe hanging it with really fine wire or that invisible thread I use for antennae... the nut idea does sound like a good idea.  I might try a Tamiya build on for size next time I do an armor piece just to see how it compares... this Dragon kit is the bees knees though.  The only thing I am not looking forward to are the 5,000 track links I have to put together... oh well... it might grow on me like masking canopies did!

Tom, the Tamiya Panther is beautifully engineered, but with the indy link tracks, replacement metal gun barrel and PE it weighs in at around £80, or $150, whereas the Dragon KT comes with everything in the box for £23, or $45!Shock [:O]

Like you, I think I might be getting a taste for armour, as I fancy having a go at Trumpeter's KV-II next. This one comes in very cheap at £12.00 and comes with link and length tracks like the Tamiya 1/48 kits. I think the only item I'd add would be a Jordio Rubio barrel at £4. Bargain armour in 1/35!

I was able to finish up this morning.  The decals settled down nicely and no solvent was necessary.  This kit does not have too many parts and I would recommend it to someone starting out so they do not get overwhelmed with 300 and some parts that some of these new kits offer.  Here are the final photos.  Darren, thanks for allowing me to be part of your build.

Richard - Very nicely done... really turned out great.   Unless I missed something entirely, the 1st completion for this GB.  I haven’t even finished my pit yet.  Should be slow between Christmas and NY so hopefully can get some glue time in.

Richard, that has to be one of the fastest GB builds I've ever seen, looks great too.

Marc, looking forward to some pics of that cockpit.

Progress Update!

Despite not expecting to get anything done this weekend, I've spent the evening adding PE to the Panther hull. Nothing overly scary, mainly the grills, which really enhance the model, even with my ham fisted application. I'll try and post some pics tomorrow.

Karl - that's what I liked about this kit, a modest amount of PE, metal gun barrel, indie links and parts to build two different versions of this Tiger were included... and because I got it at the Hobby Lobby 1/2 off sale I think it was $22.00 total.  I was going to get the Panther VI today but Christmas is eating into my budget and there will be another half off sale so I will wait...

Richard - looks great!!!  Which company puts out the kit you built?  I like those simple building kits that look good now and then.  The Tamiya Wildcat is one of my favorites for that reason... builds up looking great but isn't a headache to assemble!

some small progress today, we will see if I have the chance to get more done tonight.  I'll take pics when I get the lower hull and turret painted.  That's when it's time to assemble the indie tracks so yall might not hear from me for awhile   Wink [;)]  I'll be locked in my room with mattresses covering the walls should I get the urge to bounce off of them!

Tanky's still alive. (However, that awful movie Syriana seems to have had a damn good try at changing that). I still haven't started my build yet. I hate school. $#@! school....

Hey all, finally got 5 minutes to check the forums!!!

Well, have managed to get the belly and the first part of the camo on the Spitfire.

Doesn't look too bad considering I always do Luftwaffe stuff (the mottle hides the boo boo's!)

Jules what do you use to create the Ocean Grey colour for the Spits?

I did a quick look see for my fav paint brand (Gunze) and no luck.

As for the FW 190, I have changed the scheme to represent one of the A-6's from JG 300, just ordered the decals from Squadron, so should look pretty cool.

Very nice 163 you have there too!!

Jules - ooooh I like that one, "missing USB cable..." has a nice ring to it!  Wink [;)]

Thanks Tom.  All is forgiven.  Well maybe not all is forgiven, but all is mostly forgiven.  Well maybe not all is mostly forgiven, but all is somewhat forgiven.  A little.  Where are my meds, I need a nap. Give Rudy a pat from me & an extra doggie treat.

Well, you see there's the problem Rick... last week I came home to cotton stuffing on the floor.  Thinking he had chewed up some of the bears my wife had been delivering for a fundraiser she was in at Karate I was afraid we would have to pay out a few hundred to replace them.

I opened the living room door wider and there it was, my couch sans middle cushion.  Nothing but cotton stuffing and foam as far as the eye could see.  Rudy was sitting in the middle of it all with cotton wifts hanging out each side of his mouth and foam stuck to his feet.  In probably 30 short minutes he destroyed my double recliner couch.. instead of hundres to be repaid, it's well more than a thousand to replace... this brings him up to nearly $3000.00 he owes me.  Of course being a dog his job opportunites are limited so he's having to hone his dancing skills right now to see if he can get a shot on Americas Funniest Animal videos...

Rudy was a BAD DOG.  Lucky he didn't eat any of the foam or he would have been a dead dog.  Friends just lost a Chocolate Lab puppy when it ate some foam from a pillow he destroyed.

Oww!  yeah I am glad that didn't happen to Rudy, I would have lost the joy out of spanking him for it... Wink [;)]

Actually the wierd thing is how good he had become recently, he's nearing his 1st birthday and losing a smidgen of the puppy energy...

Got some more paint on the Tiger II... I'll try to have a in progress shot later.. (I have my batteries charged and USB cable handy... failing that I have my wifes digital camera as a backup!  Clown [:o)])
