Shaun, all I could find was that it seems Renaissance will do a transkit (not just decals) for it. Seems not to be available yet.

Interesting comment about the heat - it was quite hot (but dry and very windy) here. Might have had an effect for sure.

At this stage I am highly disgusted. Bordering on being PO'ed. Really. I've heard great things of the Humbrol metalized paint. Recently only got a chance to buy it. The one great one was the metallic alum, paints as expected. But the metallic black was disgusting - thick and could not get it to mix for the life of me, paints on very "stripey". The yesterday eve I tried metallic steel on the exhausts, thought it's be a good idea for a base layer, seeing that my light gunmetal TS was a gonner. It resembles paint, at least. But dries extremely quickly and a second brush stroke simply lifts the existing paint (where the strokes overlap). Should these things just be airbrushed ? Not that I want to chase that met black through an a/b! Will try to add another layer and polish it over the weekend to see what gives.

Does anyone know if there any decals around to do Rossi's flower power Mugello NSR. I think it was '01? Or what about one of his 250 rides?

SeaBee:    I'm beginning to think the orange peel effect comes from the atmosphere ie if it's too warm or humid. I've just finished spraying up a Subie in white for Panizzi's '99 Monte car & it came out thus. Not the worst orange peel I've seen, but an orange nevertheless. It's been stinking hot here + high humidity, so maybe that was the cause.

                  Re: Rossi in Gauloises leathers driving a Marlboro sponsored car - I think both brands are Philip Morris products, so that would be entirely do-able.

        Long time ,no see :-).just s quick update on my progress have been a bit busy last 4-5 weeks at work,Work in a bakery and Xmas time is always busy for us, + they start a new line of bread up which  added an extra 6hrs to the day starting to get a bit worn out.
 Have to redo cowling on kr500 as after painting it had a look at it yesterday and has big runs through it so will have to be done again.
Have also got 1/9 moto gp desmo half made up ,an R1 superbike nearly fin,a Protar 1/9 (metal frame)1988 yamaha yzr500 started,started Tamyia's duke last week have only glued cowling together,
have still got to decal the M1 from start of last year (when did that come out?)+ started my foggy figure that i've had sitting around for last couple of years.
Beteer go now as I am now late for work ,oh well my just give up this job and have a rest for a couple of months

Dis some real progress on my builds today. Most of the engine parts is in place, all that's left is to wire it up with some cables.

Screw up the lower cowl of the Kanemoto NSR and have to strip it. The paint came out really uneven and flat. Tried some polishing and another coat but then it turned out too dark... Best to redo it.

I'll go about painting the swing arm tomorrow. I hate it when you must insert the shock before you glue the swing together, leaves so ugly glue marks. I'll try to insert it, glue, sand+putty, sand again and paint it. Will have to cover the shock up in some way though...

Hi SeaBee the Cape was fantastic. You live in a beautiful part of the country! We saw a lot of the damage caused by the fires. The wife and I did 3,800 km on the 1: 1 Ducati in 7 days and weather was great, just windy in the Cape which pushed us around on the Duke a bit.  Bum got numb at the end!

 

Not much progress on Ducati GP4 but will post progress as we go along, need to get inspired again!

Hope you had a nice holiday! Enjoy your time in the Cape? Sorry for not getting back to you on our date, but we had a chaotic time with everything from close friends' parents dying to 3/4 of my inlaws' farm burning down in the fires we had here. At least not buildings and no people injured. And a few other things inbetween - we hardly had time to catch our bearings. Between all that my wife due date has crept on us very quickly!

The Honda is looking real good! Looking forward to hearing your opinions/experiences on the Duc (esp) as well.

Back from holidays. Completed Honda RS1000, not really MotoGP but was a nice change. Currently working on Fortuna M1 about half way and the Ducati GP4 with decals from Ragged Edge which check out okay

TS-49 + TS-50 is what Etienne and the other blokes at Mautomobile are talking about for the Spidy bike. I guess that would be quite right.

And the Camel Yamaha relationship was quite unexpected wasn't it?? But as I love the Yellow Camel bikes I'll eagerly await it of coarse!

Yeah, that livery's race ended rather spectacularly. Thusfar I am looking towards TS49 and TS50 for respectively the red and blue. Any different opinions will be welcomed!

Back to the rack life theory - it might be that. The one thing that did happen, is that it was a half-used tin. I used the first lot quite a long time ago - maybe that had something to do with it. Maybe it was me not waiting long enough for the gasses mixing to subside, with it maybe reacting differently (though I can't think why) having been half-used a year or so ago. Mind you, it was longer than that... Maybe I just tried too hard to get too much out of the last bit of the tin - who knows?! Certain places I am not yet happy with, but we'll get it all sorted!

Strange thing, your experience with the paint.  Maybe it simply reached it's shelf-life?  I used to paint 1/1 aircraft what seems like a lifetime ago, and I remember shelf-life was always a big deal.  Anyway,  look at the bright side with the spidey decals- Marco wrecked that race, perhaps a diorama from the gravel trap?  I'm kidding of course, and admire your courage for taking on those decals.  SPEAKING OF WHICH!  I don't know if you all have seen the news, but it looks like this time next year, since this build will probably still be in progress , we shall be eagerly awaiting CAMEL-sponsored '06 YZR-M1's from Tamiya.  Or at least decals.  Yamaha racing posted the news today.  I don't have a link, but it should be pretty easy to find.  So much for the Rossi/Gauloises/Marlboro F1 sponsorship conflict theory, I guess.  At least for this year?

Yamahafreak: The Tabu decals for the Duc has long since been released - allready got mine in Nov from HLJ. It includes, I think, the 2005 Marlboro's (memory not 100% on that one...)

At last, after my endless (it felt like!) summer "rest" (doing all sorts of other stuff around the house - yes dear! ) actually started working on the above-mentioned Duc again. Starting to work a bit on the handlebars. The bodywork's orange peel has been sorted more or less. The weirdest was that I could not get my previous tin of TS49 to spray without orange peel. The moment I took out my next tin after that one's seen his end, it went on like it usually does! *shakes head and goes on with the rest*

I got my Spidey decals from MediaMix - record time, esp with the holiday weekends inbetween! What colour(s) are being prescribed in your guys' instructions? I would have thought TS49 would be the correct red, not yet certain as to the blue. But here they're talking about fluorescent res (as in the red used on the Marlboro McLarens) There is even on part on the screen where you can choose whether to paint or to decal - and trust me, it's a fluorescent red! Almost looks pinkish! And man, that's gonna be a job to decal... I'm delibirately not even talking/thinking/having nightmares (allready) about what looks like a rather messy masking job to be done! Not my speciality... Upon first looks, I thought it was pretty well separated, but obviously not! Now for the search for pics.

I stand corrected on the meassurements but it doesn't change the fact that it is due to the length of the riders that you shall fix the tank and seat cowling to get a correct set up of the Fortuna bike (sort of rivet counting as no one will notice in the shelf but I find it quite amusing to fix the bikes up rather than to do them all OOB)

To the issue of museum collection decals. If tried a few with different satisfaction. The ones for the Teléfonica test bike (2003) was really fragile and broke when worked on with setting solution. On the other hand, the Lucky Strike ones I'm using now are GREAT. Perfect print and stand to be rubbed down into the plastic. Quite some carrier film to be trimmed though... When it comes to the Marlboro decals for the Desmo I think you shall go with the ones that seem to have the best and most correct pattern.

Nice job on the airboxes.  I'll have to start incorporating the hairdrier into my next c/f job, which hopefully will start this weekend.  I hate to nitpick, but Yamaha's racing website lists Rossi's height as 182cm, about 5ft 11in and about 59kg or 130 pounds. Quite the rail, but still a monster compared to the late D.J. who was 162cm (5ft 4in) and 51kg (112 lbs).  Clearly, at 6ft 2in and 190 lbs, my only future anywhere near Moto GP will be either trackside or in the world of 1/12!  Oh, and has anyone used Museum Collection's decals yet?  I've got some for my Repsol RC, and am thinking about getting the Marlboro markings for my Duc.  Just wondering if I should wait for an offering from Tabu?

One more thing Archangel, one big reason to redo the seat cowling is that the decal separating red from silver on the top of the seat will not fit if the seat bulb is too short. I guess that can be sorted out but that's why I decided to do the seat...

Long time since I posted any progress so now it's time to do so. Just a few ones but the engines are comming along nicely. One thing's for sure, I'm not friends with the macro function of my camera...

Today I started painting the red on the seat cowling. Been scared to do this as I allways get paint bleeding benieth the masking tape. Here's a couple of shots to show how I masked it up.

First one is to be able to get a nice rounded edge. With a too wide bit of tape you'll get wrinkles for sure. To take care of the paint bleeding issue I sprayed a few mist coats of TS-13 Clear to seal the tape. I've only put on one mist coat of red today but will do the rest tomorrow. I'll post the result.

I've talked a lot about the CF:ing of the airboxes. It has turned out pretty well but it's a real hazzle taking pictures of it. The autofocus will not work with me. I uploaded the best shots so that you can get some idea of the result.

I've used masking tape to cover the airbox and cut it into smaller sections. MicroSol and Set + the old hair dryer and it turned out pretty well. I've used to different types of SMS carbon fibre, "Twill weave Black on pewter" and "Plain weave pewter". The first one is lighter in color and has black stripes on the gray background. The second one has more goldish dots on a black background. Interesting to test two different weaves but I can't really pic one in favour of the other.

The Museum Collection decals for the Lucky Strike bike comes with brass bits for the sliding parts of the front forks. Will be looking great but it means you have to separate the forks like this:

Will be quite easy to drill the holes for the brass bits as long as you center them properly. Doing this also made it a lot easier to paint the other sections of the forks.

Not much to put in the old christmas tree but I'll be back with more in a short while.

The Repsol bike of Tamiya is showing the setup of the Valentino Rossi machine. Rossi is a quite tall man, taller than 190 cm (6 ft 4inches) wich calls for a different setup than for for example Dajiro Kato. If Kato rode the Rossi bike he would have had problems reaching the handle bars...

Now, take a look at reference pictures of the Fortuna bike and you'll see that this issue is fixed through a shorter tank dummy and a different seat cowling. The transkit needs a bit of work as it doesn't give you a whole new tank dummy, just the rear end of it (you have to cut the existing one and fix the new rear end with glue and putty). To fix the seat the t/k has a white metal "bump" that you fix to the back rest portion of the seat.

Hope that cleared the question marks out. BUT, not very many people will notice the difference if you build it on the repsol machine. When I did the bike I re-built the seat with putty and skipped the tank job...

ack, I am not that sad about the cowling...yet...  I am building it for sentimental values anyways since that was the first bike my cousin built when we were kids, as mine was the VT250F.  already had stripped all the paints but had left the cowlings aside for future painting practice.  I have another two factory color nsr500s so I just started working on a white set (they each comes with a clear set and a white set and still has the molded line for the rothmans version blue and white scheme separation guide[man i am wordy], great for spare parts, especially for people like me. =P)  and yes it's the '86 version, so unfortunately Rod, unless you can tell me a way to convert a '98 repsol NSR500 to an older model, I can't take it off of your hands.

why is there a transkit for the fortuna rc211v?  is it not the same as the repsol one tamiya makes?

Who has worked on the NSRs for three days know. Various stuff but mainly focused on restoring the exhausts. I'm pretty satisfied now, only have to spray some blue on them. Engines are coming to completion as well as the wheels. It's getting there.

I emailed archangel with an answer that I have a  set of '93 decals (st27 Doohan kit) I can sell but he may be referring to the early Gardner kit?

Ryan, don't worry (too much) about the a/b mishaps! Though it's a complete misery when it happens, you can motivate yourself by knowing it's happened to almost all of us! Me for sure... You live, you learn - take from it what you can and learn, clean up and re-do... Though it will feel at this stage that all fell apart, take it easy, work on another model for a while, then return to the "mishap" and start with new vigour! As I said, we've all been there...

hey, anyone knows where i can get team fortuna decals to convert the '02 repsol RC211V into the Kato Daijiro version?

i ruined the rothmans nsr500 while spraying the clear coat.  apparently the royal blue started to mix into the white surfaces, killing half of my decals.  I had just stripped everything, and now looking for the same kit online... found almost nothing on ebay beside two or three extremely overpriced ones for something from which I will only take the decal.  I wonder if studio27 has any conversion decals that i can at least save the bike.  this is the first bike i used my airbrush for and so far whatever can go wrong had gone wrong.  = (

 

Don't forget the "Hi-def"  carbon composite decals from Scale Motorsport, they look really good and are a pleasure to work with.

Was not sure about the one-man team, but heard about Rossi and the Nastro Azzuri sponsorship. Even if so, from what I've read they seem to have something lined up that will only be announced in January. Of course, all the conspiracy theorists are saying this strengthens the Ferrari rumours - he can't very well wear Gualoises leathers as well as test in Marlboro colours. (Yeah right...)

3rd on the to-do list...? You're a good boy! I've got a VERY long to-do list! Just ordered (on the way) the SMS version of the Spiderman decals. Really looking forward to that... My next bike "project" might end up a dual-build of 2 M1's - a Spidey and Rossi version, with the latter getting some PE detail added, etc.

I heard a rumor that Rossi will be on a one-man team (forgive me if this is old news) with Nastro Azurro sponsoring his M1.  That would make Edwards the "A" rider on the former Gauloises team, without that sponsor of course, but I can't remember who his team mate is supposed to be.  Oh, and I FINALLY got my Fortuna M1 in the mail today.  Unfortunately, it's third on the to-do list.

We must build our M1's as is while we can... I see they Yamaha Gualoises/Fortuna sponsorship deal is apparently something of the past.

Hope 2006 will be good to you all, see you there!

Haha, no I was just saying it is something I thought of. Because it can make the model look really crappy if you don't do it right, I'd suggest they bring out decals for it (for paint-inhibited people like me!). But I should patent the idea!

I think I know what you're talking about with the grips, they just look like a real pain.  I was thinking of doing the whole grip red, then detailing with flat black.  But you mention "patented" decals for the grips?  Some more details, if you please. Also, got my Nicky #69 decals from HLJ finally, so that one should go in work this week since I'm off.  Still no Fortuna M1 from the LHS in North Carolina, gotta follow up on that one. I'll probably order the tobacco decals for the Duc from HLJ tonight, and I won the fork set off Ebay already, so hopefully all these parts will be on my table soon.

Yamahafreak, I am working on that one at this stage! Great fun thusfar. Pleasant change after 3 (or was it 4?) RC211v's!

Once you get to the handlebars, you'll understand my (still to be patented ) idea of decals for the detail on the grips...

Darren, I agree! A model without "accessories" is just not the same any more!

At the rate I'm going I'll still be working on this RGV by the end of '06.  I'm currently prepping all the body work for paint.  I plan on getting back to some heavy duty scratchbuilding after the new year.  I'm thinking of some aluminum forks...Maybe turned down on the lathe...who know's. I hope to get some paint and decaling done to change things up a bit.

My wife thinks I should put at least ONE model together without adding anything extra to it...shame on her. I tell her I get my money's worth out of every kit.

OH YEAH!  Got me the Duc Desmosedici for Xmas!  Time to order forks and decals.  That makes three more builds on deck.  When did we say this build ends?  End of the '06 season, the way things are going.
