Moto GP group build '05

SeaBee -yeah frame is as they say,if you still want some pic's let me know and will send some to you otherwise goto Ducati.com and click on racing section(motogp)

Any will help, but I am at the part where you assemble the first parts of the frame - the part where the engin fits in. Suggested to be painted the same red as the body...?!

Any ideas?

                       yes if I can get my daughter to use her new fangle dangle mini camera to take some shot of my RCV I will post. Doing a Marco '05 RCV (decals not out yet) with '05 resin, '05 etch set blaa blaa.

I am stuck at moment finding right size bearing for the quick shifter,and lock wire for the throttle cables, lolo. ;-)   just joking, but thats what its going like. Ahhhhhh to have good eyes again.

I am finding some of the colour instructions a little hard to believe. May be accurate, but I want to check it out for myself.

Darren, all I can say is immense detail, great work! I admire your patience.

Closest I've done to that was the old Protar 1:9 bikes where you had sheets of platic you had to but on top of each other and melt the protruding parts of the pins to build the chain. (Remember them?)

Shayne...This is my second attempt at a motorcycle.  I did start one a couple years back but never finished it.

Seabee...PE is just like anything else, it takes a little practice. I am by no means an expert with this stuff. I just keep plugging away until I get it right. That may explain why my builds take so long.

Joel and yamafreak72...Here's another pic that may help

Here's a before and after shot. The pin is .020 piano wire. The roller is .032 brass tube. First slide the tube over the wire and center it. Next slide 2 links on each side of the roller facing opposite directions. Now slide the assembly to one end of the wire leaving a few thousandths sticking out. Then trim the wire on the other side to the same length. Here comes the tricky part. Using a hammer and something hard, such as a vise, tap the ends of the pin gently to swell them. You may have to stop a couple of times and recenter the pin. Once you have the links secured, dress the ends with sandpaper or a file. NOTE...do not strike the pins to hard!!! Otherwise they will bend and deform. You also want to be able to move the links when your done so you will have as realistic a chain as possible. Thats one link...now just make a whole bunch more and connect them. When connecting links you only use the wire and tube as described before.

Rear Caliper, the shock and swing arm looks great as well.

As said before I have never tried my luck on one of those Acustion chains but I really want to. Can you tell me some about how you fix the links? I can see from the set that it comes with some sort of metal wire that I guess shall end up like link pins? Do you insert the wire to fix the links and then chop it off? And how do you make it stay in place after that?

First off, let me add my welcome to the build.  Second, I think you're insane......just kidding of course, although piecing together that chain makes me wonder.  Looks great though, I just don't understand how they build up from a pe sheet to a three dimentional chain.  More pics?  A little beyond me at the present time, I think.  Not much progress on my RC, Thanksgiving and all that.  I'll be heading out of town for a week and I think I'll take it with me and perhaps get it mostly finished.  We shall see.

Darren, that's looking great! I have some PE sets for some outstanding motogp bikes, but haven't yet plucked up the courage to do one! Seeing the results, it will be done after I finished the duck...

Darren -you say this is your first motorbike model?that chain set coming along nicely ,have you made a jig up for it or doing free hand?.

Thanks everyone for allowing me to join in.  Here's some pics of my slow, but steady progress.

 

This is the Acustion pe chain, it's about 2.5 inches so far, still got 3.5 inches to go. The outer facing links will be Telefonica blue (Tamiya calls out X-13 which is wrong) and the rest of it will be a Metalizer of some sort.  Any suggestions would be great!

These are scratchbuilt gears.  The Acustion gear set would not fit the chain after assembly.  I made my own gears with the correct number of teeth from .040 styrene using Waldrons punch set.  I used the hardware from the gear set to finish them off. 

This is SMS's rear brake disc painted with metalizer steel and X-31 titanium gold.  I just noticed that I haven't put the hardware on yet...oops

This is the rear shock modified and mocked up.  It's built up with various sizes of aluminum tubing.  The reservoir ( I think that's what it's called) is painted clear orange straight over the bare aluminum.  I still have a few small details to add to it before I paint and assemble it.

Finally is the swingarm.  I stripped the chrome off of it and the chassis and sprayed them with Metalizer aluminum plate.  I sealed the chassis, but left the swingarm bare.  The sealer makes the metalizer dull, which was what I was going for.  My references show this situation on this particular bike...I'm thinking that maybe the swingarm had recently been changed.  I've also installed the pe chain adjusters,  I still need to add some rod for the adjuster bolt. Finally,  I installed a scratchbuilt brake mounting bracket which allowes me to better line up the brake rotor in the caliper.

Any comments or suggestions are always welcomed.

 Archangel - yes it is the KR500 got one in your build haven't you? ,what pic's have you come across?
                    
Joel-the tank ventilator tubes have just got some clear yellow in them,plus the engine , well with the few pic's that i did have (which are of a diff kr500 for some resone could not find any pic's of the tamayia version)the engine colours did not match that were called for in instrctions taking into account what they were made from in the 70's and 80's have just used what i have in front of me the most  of ie  X-31,X-32 and X-33 .the exhauts were the main choice instructions said gold leaf but the pic's showed a lighter shade so used X-31.
Have also got an M1 sitting aside waiting to be made with the spiderman decals,forksand all of the extras
Rod from ragged edge is posting the D'antin decals in morning for me (he is bad on my bank balance)

Slightfan: Great work on that Kawasaki! I love the work on the brakes and the engine. The tank ventilator tubes looks great too, what have you put into those?

Seabee: Really strange... Does the spots appear on the bare surface or just over the seam? Try to clean the part really thorrough and reprime as you say. It shouldn't be the glue/putty/primer combination as it worked on the other parts... If it doesn't work the second time, take some pictures if you have the chance so we can dig into it.

Did you all see the Renaissance release of the Roberto Rolfo D'antin Ducati decal sheet? That bike is so good looking!

Started the painting of the Duck's body parts this weekend, having done the sanding during the week. All went well but for a bit of my over-eagerness and getting a bit to close on one part, causing some bubbling/orange peel. Not to worry, that can be sorted. What was really weird, was on the front fender I got some places where it seemed the primer simply won't stick. It was like water of a duck's back, causing some pin-size blotches, quite a few in a group, on 2 seperate places. Just on that one part! Tried the red after that and, as expected it came out rubbish. So that one was re-sanded and reprimed yesterday eve.

Anybody have ideas as to the occurrance of those bunches of pin-sized places where the paint looked like it simply was not gripping? It was really like water and oil, it looked like it fell and was simply pushed away, not bubbled or anything. So, if anybody has ideas, shout, so I can know what I did wrong to prevent it in future - and keep somebody else from doing the same thing. Really the first time ever I saw something like that... Oh, it was with TS white primer, usually the most consistent of sprays. Before now, even I could not screw it up!

Yamafreak: How peculiar it may sound it is actually the Tamiya M1 that is used as donor for the ZX-RR... Only a few things used though, like forks, brakes and wheels.

I have the Fortuna M1 on the shelf and I'm thinking of doing it same time as the Spiderman version. But I guess it's a bit up the road. For my part I find that livery (fortuna) much more interesting than the Gauloises one, but you see a lot of the latter one on the forums. I guess most people hold Rossi in favour of Melandri huh??

Hey Gents,

I saw the S27 Kawi kit on HLJ's website for like $115 US.  It's listed as a "conversion kit".  Am I missing something?  What kit do you convert into a Kawasaki?  And an '02?  Hmmm...

Anyway, I'm stalled at the moment.  Just found out the wife passed a test to become a French teacher here in Texas, so we've been celebrating.  That, and maintaining my 1/1 YZF-R1 has eaten up most of my weekend.  Panels on the Valencia are mostly done, except for decals. I know that's a big "except", but hopefully these Valencias will be better than the Telefonicas were.  Probably get on with the "guts" of the thing during the week. Try to figure out the new pic posting function too. Nothing on the Nicky Repsol, still no decals from HLJ.  Got a call that the Fortuna M1 I ordered from a guy in North Carolina finally came in, might have to sub that one for the nicky bike. I'll make it Marco's of course.  He seems to have quite the future, even if it is with Honda now, and besides I kinda like the different seat cowl he uses since he's so short.  Anybody doing/done the Fortuna scheme yet?

now i see why it's good to be un-married and young.  just equally whipped but i get to blow 300 bucks on 2 1/12 tamiya discontinued McLaren MP4/6 babies without having to confront consequences like that.

The brackets behind the IMG shall of coarse be ones like these "]" I just used paranteses to keep the tag visable. Then it shall work wonders!

Sometimes it is the copy/paste function in explorer that bugs you, mark the text to be copied, press CTRL+C then go to the message (use two separate windows with the forum and photobucket) put the cursor where you want the image and press CTRL+V.

Darren: Welcome to the GB, keep us posted on that Suzuki and especially on the Acustion chain set!

Seabee - yeah I know how to post a picture (copy and paste and that)probleem is when I copy the link when I do the message and go to paste it won't paste the link on message at leaste old forum it had and button to click to paste the link this new forum dosen't.
Yes doing the kork ballington kawa only problem is the few pic's that i have are not of the actaul tamyia kit  ie  frot fender is way off ,frame and tank are even different .In fact can't even find any pic's of the tamyia version unless it is by another modeler


Darren -good to see others are keeping an eye out on whats happening in this group build ,haven't done a pe set with chain and gear set haven't got the patience to do them

You're more than welcome to join in mate. It's always good to get new people involved. I don't think this build has an actual end date, so you'll have plenty of time. Feel free to post as many pics of your build as you want.

Hello everyone...I've really enjoyed watching your progress.  I know it's kind of late, but I was wondering if anyone would mind me joining in.  I recently started a project and would like to share it with others of similar interest.  I'm building Tamiya's 2000 Telefonica Suzuki RGV.  To go along with the kit I picked up a SMS detail set and CF decals, also i'm using an Acustion chain and gear set.  I have only started on the swing arm and chain so far.  If it's ok with everyone I'll post some pictures.

You should have an "image" line in photobucket with a img and /img, both in seperate square brackets, one in front and one behind your pic's url. Copy that whole line, paste here, viola!

Btw, are you building the Kork Ballington Kawa? Or did Tamiya bring out other ones as well?

Not much happening on the Duck, I bought a new bicycle this week and is still tweaking my setup! Hopefully I will have some progress over this weekend.
