Out of the Box -- First Jets!!!

Finally have some progress to report.  Finished the pit on my Classic Airframes 1/48 Supermarine Attacker.  The pit is provided as Resin with PE seat belts.  The detail is adequate, but not in the same class as Aires or Cutting Edge.  But, since the interior is basically all black, not a lot of detail would be visible anyway.

Dry fitting shows that quite a bit of filler will be needed for this build, but that's expected with a Limited Run kit.

Frog?  Yeah, frog is about right.  The fit makes it more like a three legged hunting dog with fleas, BIG fleas.  But I knew it when I opened the box so no more whinging.

Is the Airfix kit the old Novo/Frog offering?

Rick, yeah I knew CA had the Vampire.  I was just sort of wondering why there are only three kits available, Hobbycraft, Airficx and Classic Airframes?  The Vampire saw service with all sorts of air forces in all sorts of configurations.  I did not even find a conversion set for the trainer version.  There are plenty of decal sheets out there though, some quite pricey ($20 US)...hence the painted and homemade decals for the squadron flash.

Airfix decals!?! Don't get me started there. Very painful to work with.

She's looking good. I like the RAF Green and Grey scheme on the Vampire. Makes it almost look animal like. It's a bird, its a plane... its a frog... A frog?... oh wait... yeah... it kinda looks like a frog.

Joe, Classic Air Frames has released a series of Vampires in 1/48.  They are Limited Run kits, but not too difficult.

No foil, I was out and can not justify burning the gas to go one hour each way to the LHS for a few sheets..

There still is a HUGE amount of clean up to do though...I am using the Airfix kit decals and cutting the diamonds for the squadron flash...ugh, very small...

This build bought to you by Squadron Green Putty....

No worries though...coming along nicely.  The wings are on, lines rescribed and polished.  I assembled the booms last night...and SHOCKER...more putty.  This is the old Novo/Frog/Airfix kit, so the putty should not be a surprise.

Should I do so before the upper surface is painted or do it first and then mask it?

Progress Update:

Now the 'stang is done I am back to scribing panel lines on the Vampire.  Tough going on the cockpit "pod".  Wings are done and polished out the booms are staying as is.  I am away from the bench until Sunday evening so some photos will be up this time next week.  Hopefully of the first bits of foil being laid down.

Sorry it's been ages (2 months?) since my last update.  The Gloster Whittle is still almost finished.  I thought I could pack and move in a fortnight.  Well, I moved at the begining of May, and it's now the begining of July, and I'm still not finished!  What makes it worse, is that Monday the builders come in for 3 weeks.  My computer is still not fully unpacked!  Yikes!

Just to add to the fun, there is a second move potentially happening in 10-12 weeks (long story), so, until I'm back in the nice warm land of modelling, it could be ages.  At least I haven't bought too many models recently, in fact, unpacking kits has revealed quite a few doubles and trebles, so I might see about a px on the new Trumpeter Wellington.

Cool to see how everyone else has been doing though!

I'm still here Joe, but other commitments have kept my bench time  minimal.  I will get back in the groove in the next couple of weeks.

I could bump the YP-59 up the list, pull the USAAF Mk. I Meteor out of the stash, or build my Collect-Aire resin FH-1 Phantom instead of the Pend Orielle resin PBM-3D Mariner.

Given it's summer and I have three other builds on the bench (P-40C, 747-200, and P-61B) I don't think that'll happen by November.

Unless you want to include my SAA/SAL 747-200 "Magaliesburg" in the build... it was South Africa's first 747 to fly from Jo'burg to Hong Kong and back. Nice little 23 hour jaunt across the Indian Ocean (taken it myself). Or I could saw out a portion of the fuselage and build a 747SP and build the first and only commercial jet flight from Sao Paulo to Jo'burg (never took this one, but heard there's almost always room to stretch out unlike the Hong Kong flight).

I'm still here too Joe but as I'm overcommitted to GB's and the end date for this one isn't until Novemeber it's been pushed back.  Hopefully I will still be able to get to it but life sometimes has other ideas.

Sorry Joe, just feverishly scrambling to get my P-47 and Helldiver finished... the deadlines are at the end of the month for those!

Yeah, I'm still watching this string from time to time looking forward to some of these builds.

Been on a purchasing spree myself... first commission build coming up with a diversion from my normal subject matter with a 1/144 scale South African Airways 747-200 for an old friend in Naples, FL who used to fly SAA to Jo'burg during the mid-1980s for business from places like New York, Houston, London, and Hong Kong. First time doing an airliner and something other than 1/48 scale. Should be fun. I will be lighting the 747 with LEDs and fiber optics just like I plan to do with the P-61 on the build list below.

I have as well...I have finished three submissions for one group build and am a hair away from the Allied Aces completion.  This one is about 45%. 

Been on a bit of a purchasing spree of late though...

Loading up, I should have enough for the next two years considering my pace.
