Jerry

I am stalled on all fronts.  I have been so busy I barley have time to think latelyDead [xx(]. I think this is like my 3rd post in the forums in a week. I have some catching up to do.  I have started using a call center to answer my phones so biz is up sharply.  They are booking jobs like crazy instead of me trying to answer 15 messages at the end of the day.  Not to much time for modeling but  now I can buy lots of resin and PE goodiesBig Smile [:D].

Progress needless to say is slow.  Gear and LG door interiors are finally painted, canopy has been Futured and will be glued in place soon.  I discovered 4 unfilled holes in what’s now the “inside’ of the intakesAngry [:(!].  Got some putty in them but to be honest, I have no idea how I am going sand it down.  Hopefully I will get some time in tonight.

Hey… is there an air show in Cleveland over the 4th of July?  I will be in town then.  If we can work it out…how does a beer and the Blue Angels sound?  Ahhhh a cold beer listening to the sound of freedom…gotta love it!

Thanks Marc. I use an Iwata HP-CS and a Thayer/Chandler Vega 2000. How's your build coming?

Jerry & Rick,

Interesting conversation.  The 262 looks great Jerry.  I will push on the Vampire this long weekend.  Work has been insane of late over 700 road miles in 3 days, and more coming! But the nice thing has been that I am home ev ery evening for supper.

Thanks for the pic Rick...she looks great. No pilot is listed for Yellow 3 but apparently was with  the III./KG(J)54 ex-bomber unit converted to fighter aircraft during the last few months of the war. The Werknummer is 170305 stationed at Munchen-Riem, 1945. I've aquired the EagleCal sheet#95 and color recommendations are included.

Cheers,

Jerry

Jerry here's the pic you asked for.  It's the 1/48 Tamiya kit that I built 3 years ago.  The pic is " Pre-Digital" scanned off a 35mm print, so the quality isn't up to my current pics.

The color pic I found was on a Polish web site.  I had it bookmarked, but lost it when my hard drive self destructed last year.  The text was all in Polish, which I don't speak, but the pic was in English Smile [:)].  As I recall, the site was associated with the Polish publishers of the Mushroom Model books.  I'll try & find it again.  I'll have to go through my references to see what I've got on Yellow 3. Who was the pilot of Yellow 3 ?

Regards,  Rick

Rick,

Ah yes.....the ellusive Luftwaffe colors. It almost always stirs it up. It's amazing the amount of controversy on Luftwaffe subjects. There's actually a guy who composed a 7 page pdf file that shows you what you have to do to make the Hasegawa Bf 109G-4 an accurate G-4.  Seven pages!! God I love this hobby.

You actually found a color photo of "Red 13"? Wow! I'd like to see that. Could you please post a pic of your Red 13? I'd like to see it in that combination. I'm going to start another 262 soon. I have the 1/32 Trumpeter kit and this time, I think I'm going to do "Yellow 3". I've got this one RLM 83 over 76. Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Jerry

Jerry, I didn't mean to offend or suggest you change it.  As you say, no one can say for sure.  I had help in searching from Jeff Herne & Pixelater & for every 10 references found there were 5 different answers.  Most of the pics I found of Red 13 were Black & White & very blurry.  However on one site I found a color pic that convinced me that RLM 81/83/76 was the most probable.  It also agreed with the Osprey reference book I have, which caused my initial skepticism  about the Tamiya painting guide.  Whatever, you did a very nice job painting the bird.  Chances are ol' Heinz wouldn't know the difference either.  BTW, I've always liked the purple tint of Grauviolet myself Smile [:)].

Glad to hear you're doing better Chris.

Rick, I'm sure you have your reasons but, there's always a but, I don't believe anyone can say for certain what the exact colors were for "Red 13".  I also did some research and It could have been RLM 82/83 or RLM 82/81. However, color photos of aircraft later in this "Werknummer" block distinctly show 75/74. Example "White 17" W. Nf. 110956. shown in Stormbird Colors; Construction, Camouflage and markings of the Me 262. It makes sense to me that "Red 13" would be painted the same. Also, regarded Luftwaffe experts Jerry Crandell, Ben Evans, and Brett Green all three suggest RLM 75/74. And thats good enough for me. Tamiya's recommendation ( usually with a grain of salt) also suggests RLM 75/74.

So ...that's what I chose and I'm certainly not going to change it now.  Besides, I kinda like the purple color.  LOL!

Cheers,

Jerry

Thumbs Up [tup]Well Gents. I must say that I'm impressed with everyones progress in this GB so far. Sorry to say that I haven't gotten started on my 262 yet. I'm still trying to finish an F-8E and an A-7D for the ARC GB. Not only that but since I've healed from cancer surgery, I'm able to get out on my bike and get some training rides in now. I'm also getting married next month so it's been a very busy time for me. I'm sure I'll get the 262 done by the deadline though.  Keep up the good work guys.  I'll be around.

Nicely painted Jerry, but ... There's always a but aint there.  I did a lot of research on Heinz Bar's red 13 when I built one a couple of years ago.  I know what Tamiya says in their painting instructions, but the aircraft was almost certainly painted in the late war scheme of  RLM 81/83/76. Also, there was no mottle on the fuselage or engines, only on the fin & rudder.  The fuselage demarcation was a soft edge wavy line about 2/3 down the fuselage sides.  You want to be very suspicious of  Manufacturers painting guides, especially when they show RLM 74/75/76 on late war Luftwaffe.

Thanks Marc, Rick, and Scott. Made somemore progress. I've got the camo scheme complete and used the Brett Green treatment for fading. Randon mottles and streaks were applied using a lighter version of the base colors most of which will dissappear when the clear coats go on. This model will be "Red 13" and was painted, alledgedly, RLM 74, 75, 76.

Now on to the Future and the "deckles."

It's interesting how the background colors can affect the way that other colors appear.... it's all relative.  Wink [;)]

Nicely painted Jerry, but you're right, the pic makes that the strangest RLM 76 I've ever seen Smile [:)].

I finally started some painting. Well.....a little. The under side is pre-shaded and, believe it or not, painted with RLM 76. I guess the blue background throws the color setting off. It's just weird.

Tommorrow....the fun stuff!!

Nice job on the awards Jerry...HUGE progress here.  Way to go gents.  We ned to get some lady modellers in on this one next year...The Vampire is in its coffin right now.  Rescribing and polishing white plastic has been a bit hard on me eyes.   I do now have the decals I have been searching for.  Memeorial Day weekend should be finishing time for it.

Jerry, I was under the impression that there was an OOTB award for each category, but I went back & read the rules more carefully.  It wasn't spelled out very clearly, but apparently there was only one OOTB award for aircraft, with all of the category winners competing.  I wasn't on that judging team.  Sorry for the confusion.

Yes, they did have a ceremony for the major awards at the end, but I heard nothing about OOTB. Was there an OOTB award for every catagorie? I guess I assumed there was only one OOTB winner for all the entries. I've e-mailed the hosts....maybe they'll shed some light on the subject.

Thanks again Rick,

Jerry

Jerry. I left shortly after the judging was complete, so I don't know what happened to the OOTB awards.  I didn't care for the way the organizers just laid the plaques on the table by the winning models.  Very easy for someone to pick one up inadvertently or intentionally grabbing an unearned award.  I know it takes a lot longer, but I prefer an awards ceremony.  Did they have anything like that at the close ?

Wow!!   I did not know about the ootb award. Was that something they did later? I stayed till the end and heard nothing. The HE-219 was very well done. The JU52 was there just for something different. The guys in my club talked me into it. Again, I'm sorry I missed you. Maybe down the road.

Thanks for the compliments Rick!

Marc,  Looking Good so far.

Jerry, I judged two of the categories.  You should contact the Show Sponsors as your Gekko also took first place OOTB in that category as well as a third overall.  The really awesome He-219 entry took a well deserved first, but your Gekko was very nice. The Ju-52 was well done also but not quite as clean a build..
